Duncan Edwards statueThe world was today paying tribute to the victims of the Munich air disaster. And in the Black Country the thoughts of a generation were with Duncan Edwards.

In the Black Country, the Friends of Priory Park, people on the estate where Edwards grew up, were today holding a commemoration at his statue in Dudley town centre.

A minute’s silence was being held and the names of the victims who died in the disaster was being read out.

The roll call includes 40-year-old George Follows, who joined the Express & Star in around 1935 before moving to the Manchester Daily Herald, where he was working when he died.

All the dead will be remembered with a minute’s silence before tonight’s Wembley friendly between England and Switzerland.

Survivors were this afternoon assembling at Old Trafford for a special memorial service.

Edwards died 15 days after the accident, which happened at 3.04pm on February 6, 1958.

Thousands of fantastic holidays to choose from!
