Willenhall boss fuming at fixtures

Willenhall Town FCWillenhall Town boss Dean Edwards was left fuming after the late cancellation of their match at Barton Rovers last Saturday.

The bad weather has decimated the Division One Midland

programme this week, with only one match being played midweek and just three out of eight surviving last weekend.

Edwards revealed that as far as he was concerned, the Barton Rovers match was still on until he received a call stating otherwise when he was just 10 minutes away from the Bedfordshire club’s ground.

“There was a pitch inspection at 10.30am and the match was still on then,” Edwards said.

“The local referee also had a look at the pitch and he said the game was on and then when we had almost arrived, the match referee called it off.

“It was a complete farce and totally unacceptable.

“The league should install some sort of fine system for things like this.

“Our lads could have worked on Saturday and earned some money instead of wasting their time travelling to Barton.”

There was better news for Edwards on the transfer front this week, as former Watford striker Francino Francis joined the club and Lucan Spittle also committed himself to the Reds.

Francis has signed from Halesowen after Edwards beat off competition from other interested parties and made a late-night dash to Birmingham to capture the player and register him in time for the Barton match.

“Francino is a lad who’s more than capable of scoring in this league and I’m looking forward to seeing him form a partnership up front with Tyrone Barnett,” Edwards said.

Centre-half Spittle has confirmed that he will be staying with the club for the foreseeable future, after spells with Bromsgrove Rovers and Redditch United, and Edwards is also looking to sign another midfield player as he

prepares for next season.

“I’m trying to bring in another foreign player – a highly rated attacking midfielder,” Edwards said.

“Hopefully that should be it and as far as next season goes we should go close with the squad that we’re putting together here.”
