Alfred and Pat Shutt discovered the copy of the Midland Counties Evening Express paper dating back to 1874 during a spring clean at their home in West Bromwich. The couple were amazed at the condition of the paper which may have been lying at the bottom of a drawer for years.
Mrs Shutt brought the newspaper home along with a host of other items from her parents’ home, where her daughter Wendy now lives, around eight years ago.
Grandmother-of-two Mrs Shutt, aged 71, said: “We think it belonged to my grandad’s father but we don’t know why he kept it.
“When I first found it, I said to my daughter Wendy, I’ll take it home and I’ll have a look at it but then when I got it home I put it away and forgot about it until we found it again on Wednesday. I was quite shocked when I came across it.”
Retired undertaker, Alfred, aged 73, added: “What caught my eye was the condition of it. You can get a paper that’s two weeks old and it doesn’t stand up as well as this one.
“It’s not as though it’s been locked away, it’s just been thrown into a drawer.”

So why doesn’t the E&S publish a copy of it. I for one would love to read it.
I would buy a copy of it i love history
and old news.
I would love to read it as well
and me
Me too.
I bet it would be a less stressful read than reading the paper today!
For one thing it would not be reporting New Labours disintegration of this Great Land of ours!!
What else would you not read??
