Aston Villa transfer target Jermain Defoe could be going to Portsmouth, amid reports that the south coast club have agreed a deal with the striker’s club Tottenham.
Martin O’Neill has been a long term admirer of the England striker, who has been left out of Fabio Capello’s first squad.
Portsmouth have agreed a fee with Spurs for the player, according to the Press Association.
The player, who has reportedly been told he can leave by new Spurs boss Juande Ramos, is rated between £9m and £15m.
If he moves, Defoe will miss playing in the Carling Cup final with Spurs next month.
His contract is due to finish at the end of next season, heightening speculation that the White Hart Lane board is willing to sell.
