Hockey round-up

Lichfield suffered a heavy defeat to lowly BodyKraft Midlands Premier League rivals Nottingham on Saturday.

They were defeated 9-3 and are still looking for their first win of 2008, after a defeat and two draws.

In Midlands One, Walsall remained bottom of the league after a 3-2 defeat at Rugby & East Warwick.

Finchfield continued their good form with a 2-1 win over Wednesbury in the West Midlands Premier League to overtake Wolverhampton into third place.

Wolverhampton’s match with Old Wulfrunians was postponed, due to Wolves playing in an indoor tournament, so Finchfield took advantage.

First-half goals from Tim Freeman and Darren Holyhead put Finchfield in control, before Wednesbury fought back in the second half and got one back from a short corner.

Kidderminster had a tough game at home to second-placed Stone and were beaten 8-3, though remained in mid-table.

In West Midlands One, Old Halesonians kept up their challenge with an 8-2 home victory over second-bottom Ludlow which kept them in second place.

Bloxwich moved into fifth by defeating the division’s lowest-placed side Rugeley 1-0, while West Bromwich earned a creditable point with a 0-0 draw at third-placed Bromsgrove.

Kingswinford continued their impressive form with a 7-2 win over Stafford in West Midlands Two to keep themselves in third. 

But Aldridge lost 8-0 at home to second-placed Market Drayton and 

Chaddesley Corbett remained at the foot of the table after a 5-0 loss at leaders Atherstone Adders.

Stourport Ladies 1st XI beat visitors Boots 5-4 in their first Midland B Division match of 2008.

Boots went ahead after just a minute and a half, but Stourport equalised through Melissa Kennedy before Boots regained the lead.

Stourport then began to find their feet and began to play some of their best hockey of the season – during this period they scored three goals through Kennedy, Sarah Cavendish, and Kerry Walker.

The second half was scrappy, with Boots scoring two quick goals to draw level. But Stourport didn’t panic and captain Fran Moss stepped up to dispatch a short corner to seal the win and maintain their unbeaten run in the league.
