Wife guilty of poisoning husband

Staffordshire woman Kate Knight  was convicted by a jury at Stafford Crown Court today of attempting to murder her husband by giving him anti-freeze.

Knight, aged 28, formerly of Meir, Stoke-on-Trent, denied attempting to murder Lee Knight, who suffered kidney failure and brain damage in 2005.

She told the court that she did not give the 37-year-old factory worker anti-freeze or any other harmful substance.

The Crown alleged that she wanted to kill her husband to pay off mounting debts after taking out loans without his knowledge.

The court has heard that Mr Knight was left blind and deaf after his wife allegedly poisoned him in the spring of 2005 in order to collect a large pay-out from his employer and clear debts.

Knight told the court she had not put anti-freeze in the factory worker’s red wine and a curry bought to celebrate their wedding anniversary on April 4, 2005.

Questioned about Google searches on her family’s computer, she claimed she searched under terms “liver damage” and “Ecstasy” as she was concerned about her husband, who drank up to four litres of Special Brew a day.

The jury began considering its verdict on Friday afternoon.

She was due to be sentenced later.
