Edrissa Sonko – Goal Machine. Those are words I didn’t anticipate writing a few weeks back, writes Walsall blogger Mark Jones.
You still get the feeling that he should do a bit more in games and he is prone to the odd error but if he keeps up the scoring ratio until the end of the season you won’t find me complaining.
In fact I seem to remember comparing Eddy with one Charlie Ntamark quite recently but when it comes to pure goalscoring, Kyle Lightbourne springs to mind (Only another 80 or so to go then Eddy!).
Whilst we didn’t quite hit our top form on Saturday, we picked up the three points, and in the process (keep pinching yourselves) moved up to fourth, level with the team in the automatic promotion spot.
The return of Tommy Mooney (one goal, one assist) predictably made a big difference but just as important was the desire to win showed by everyone.
This was epitomised by the WBO (Walsall Boxing Organisation) Super Middleweight Bout between Clayton and our Antnee.
Usually a ‘coming together’ of two players from the same side demonstrates a lack of discipline and dressing room unrest.
I saw it as two players reacting to an error of judgement because they both set themselves high standards.
More importantly the captain was quickly in the thick of things to bang any heads together and make sure nothing got out of hand. I mean, who’d argue with Big Tommy?
Tonight’s encounter with Orient gives us the chance to avenge one very unlucky defeat at the start of the season.
I also seem to remember as I was walking back the 3½ miles to the nearest parking space to Brisbane Road on that August day, the general consensus among the Londoners was that they were on the up and we were going down.
I wonder what they’re thinking now? And how many of them will be travelling today?
The Danny Fox transfer saga now seems to have concluded and the deal seems to be good for everyone.
He’s moved into the Championship, we appear to have got a decent enough fee for him and the return of Paul Boertien and the emergence of Rich Taundry mean that we won’t necessarily be short in the left back position.
Even Dicky Dosh seems to be happy, so things can’t be bad.
I’ve had a couple of digs at Foxy over the way his transfer request was conducted, so it was good to read his parting comments which showed a lot of affection for the club.
I do rate him as a player and I’ve got a sneaky feeling it may not be the last time we see him in a Walsall shirt. All the best Dan.
A belated farewell to Paul Hall too.
He arrived at the Banks’s with nothing to prove after the contribution he made in his promotion-winning first spell at the club.
As a goal-scoring wide player, I thought he’d make a useful squad player but he obviously needs to be playing first team football right now. Good luck to ya Paul.
