Two in court on cemetery theft

Two brothers who allegedly stole aluminium flower pots from gravestones at a Sandwell cemetery appeared before magistrates today charged with theft.

Scott Aspbury, aged 26, of Acacia Avenue, Yew Tree, and Lee William Aspbury, 34, of Caldwell Street, Stone Cross, both pleaded not guilty to stealing the aluminium planters from Heath Lane Cemetery in West Bromwich last year.

They allegedly took 10 of the planters, which belonged to Sandwell Council, and are worth about £5 each.

Prosecuting at West Bromwich Magistrates Court, Maxine Jarrousse said: “The theft of metal is a particularly prevalent offence at the moment in this area.

“This particular offence, though highly unsavoury, was low value.”

They were remanded on unconditional bail until February 28 when they will stand trial before West Bromwich magistrates.

So give ‘em a splap on the wrists and tell ‘em to behave themselves, as usual.
