Argument over badgers’ sett

A badgers’ sett may have been destroyed during preparation work on a canalside housing scheme in Walsall, planning bosses revealed today.

Action could be taken against Cala Homes (Mids) Ltd for allegedly disturbing the home of the protected species in Leamore Lane, Bloxwich, during work.

But today a Cala Homes spokesman insisted that it had yet to start work and that the sett was disused.

The developers have submitted plans for 102 homes at the former Deeleys Castings site and experts have assessed the wildlife there.

The plans are recommended for approval but a report to Walsall Council’s development control committee, which is meeting tonight, suggests a badgers’ sett may already have been ruined.

In the report to councillors David Elsworthy, head of planning, building control and regeneration, says: “Given the nature and extent of the remediation works necessary, it is likely that the sett has been destroyed.

“The applicant is aware of the implications of this action.”

Under the protection of Badgers Act 1992 it is illegal to kill, injure, cause cruelty, dig or damage a badger sett.

Anyone found guilty could be fined up to £5,000 and face six months in prison.

Yet more houses, at the expense of places to build new business’s. Where the hell are all these people coming from to buy all these houses & where will they be working? Everywhere you look new builds go up.
Also if they have disturbed a Badget sett, I hope this building company have the book thrown at them
