The silly season is here again, with talk of potential new signings emanating from all sorts of weird sources, writes Villa blogger Gregg Williams.
For every genuine story of a player at Bodymoor Heath for talks, we seem to get 10 stories that start ‘my mate works down Villa Park’ or ‘guess who’s been seen buying a house near Birmingham?’
As I write this we look most likely to sign Jermain Defoe, who would be an excellent addition to the squad.
I just hope we also bring in a couple of right sided players to balance the team and provide cover and competition for places.
It is fantastic news that Martin Laursen has signed a new deal.
He has become a very important player for us, bagging more than his fair share of goals and putting impressive defensive displays week in, week out.
If we do manage to qualify for Europe his experience will also prove to be invaluable.
I’ve just heard that we have apparently accepted a bid from Small Heath FC for our young centre back Gary Cahill, which is troubling news indeed.
Four million pounds is a lot of money, but I hope young Gary decides to stay put, at least for now.
He’s a more gifted player than Liam Ridgewell, and still has a lot of potential.
He was a hero when he scored that sensational goal against the Blues two seasons ago, and I’d hate to see him suffer the ignominy of having to wear a Blues shirt for a living.
Next up in the league, it’s Liverpool.
We have a poor record at Anfield and routinely seem to end up going 3-0 down early on with no hope of getting back in the game.
Hopefully we’ll be up for this one and looking to take advantage of the pressure that Liverpool are under at the moment.
Our away form is decent, and we need to put in another performance like at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day.
If we can match that level of quality we have every chance of taking something from the game.

A bit of advice for young Mr Cahill - don’t rush into anything this January. If you need regular first team football (which is undoubtedly helping you improve as a player) - look at going back to Sheffield United on loan for the trest of the season. Another couple of strong months in the Championship will improve your bargaining ability considerably, and you’ll have much more time during the summer months to plan your future and see where it lies than you will in the next two weeks.
Don’t rush into making a move you may end up regretting.
I absolutely agree with you 100% about selling Cahill. Am I the only one who saw what that lad did on the pitch???? Am I the only one who saw shades of Paul McGrath?? Cahill was an absolute legend in the making.
Whatever about his bicycle kick against the Blues… I was there when he ran out to charge down a winger and used his spider-senses to know that there was no-one behind him and simply ducked his head under the ball so it went to Sorensen! Seriously….. shades of Paul McGrath.
I personally, would pick him over Davies or Knight week in week out. And if Olly M clears off, I’d feel far more reassured having Cahill in the back 4 alonside Laursen.
If we have to let him go, let him go out on Loan again. Don’t lose one of the biggest talents we’ve ever had.
Stevieblueyez, I agree if Cahill goes it should only be on loan. Like you and every other Villa fan that I know I rate him very highly.
Hopefully, next season we will be involved in a lot more games. Ollie will have gone by then, so what then if Laursen’s injury flares up again? We will have only Knight and Curtis Davies as a pairing and no cover!!
Chris - if we sell Cahill we will buy a better player. All I ask is that we don’t sell him to that lot! Ridgewell was different, we all knew he wasn’t good enough. Cahill? Well, he might be, though I have my doubts. If we sell him to someone else, fine. We will still remember him fondly and enjoy THAT goal. If he joins THEM the memory will be not be so sweet.
A good player cahill’ maybe mcarthy can take him to wolves on loan till the end of the season.i know he chose to go to sheffield ahead of wolves last time, but locally it’s a fantastic move for him and o’niel to keep tabs on his progress.also wolves need someone of his stature at the back he could make a hell of a difference.
