Albion’s players were today ordered to cut out the sloppy goals after they squandered a 2-0 lead against Charlton in the FA Cup.
Manager Tony Mowbray reckons the Baggies gifted the Addicks a route back into last night’s third-round replay and landed themselves with an unwanted period of extra time.
And he has warned they must end their habit of handing opponents easy goals as they look to press home their advantage in the race to reach the Premier League.
Mowbray’s concerns were laid bare by the manner in which his side conceded their first goal last night and but for a glaring miss by Luke Varney and the help of the woodwork late on Albion’s FA Cup fate could have been much different.
“Charlton are a good side,” said Mowbray.
“They’ve got a lot of good players, a lot of youthful energy, a lot of pace, a lot of people travelling onto space and threats all over the pitch.
“That said, I didn’t really see them scoring until a freaky type of goal from our perspective that allowed them back into the game.
“As they went chasing the equaliser late on it was almost typical of us to let that type of goal in.
“We must cut those soft goals out of our game.”
Mowbray admitted his players failed to hit top gear as they met the Addicks for the third time this season and emerged with a dramatic victory on penalties.
But he also paid tribute to the Charlton effort, which he believes kept the shackles on his own team.
“It wasn’t a great game,” said Mowbray.
“It might have been exciting because the way the scoring went and the penalties.
“But as a spectacle it was more tactical.
“They came to frustrate our passing game and did so very, very well.
“They’ve also got good players to counter-attack so they were always a threat but it wasn’t a great spectacle.
“We weren’t at our best - but we’re in the next round.”

Nah! we did it on purpose because we’re after a goalscoring record.
penalties stuck another 4 on the tally.
We do like living on the edge though!
I felt a bit sorry for Macdonald last night because he got in some good positions but fluffed his chances. If one had gone in, he might have picked up the confidence he obviosly needs.
I think he agreed with all the fans that it was not the right time for him to try out his penalty kicks!
Well i thought it was a great game, and i pity the fans who did not show up.
2. I wish I could have seen it but I would have been biting my nails to their root with ET and penalties haha
a win is a win
Just read Alan Pardue saaid the big test will come at their place on good friday - conveniently forgetting the 4-2 drubbing we gave them 2 weeks ago.
Also just heard Keegan is back at newcastle - PHEW, another prem team that TM hasn’t joined.
Bring it on - we are going up in style !
wbabomber - were you actually at the game. you glasses must have steamed up with all the rain as it was a crap game.
Unwanted extra time by the baggies last night, should have finished the game of when we where 2-0 up. The rain didn’t help, but i hope that mowbray doesnt come out with we where tired after Tuesdays game ,if we lose against Cardiff .We are supposed to have the best squad in the league so how can he say we are tired,Phillips was rested so he cannot say he his tired, let us concentrate on the league no and forget about the cup till we play peterborough. All the baggies fans hope we perform better against cardiff than we did in the league cup, the two over 30s took us apart if we play ow er usual winning game at home we will beat Cardiff 3-0
I could not agree more with TM . We really do need to stop defending like a pub team(Curtis will want to come back lol).
We have in recent weeks riden our luck slightly and one of these games it will run out, lets face it we aint going to win every game. I really think that we need a power house type figure at the back (Darren Moore type but obviously better on the ball)
But at the end of the day a wins a win whether its lucky or convincing
sorry ,, did i just read what i thought i read ?????
on a comment on the wolves pages albion fans sed they want mowbray out !!!!! is that a joke or wolves fans ???????
seriously .. im not avin a go .. im just amazed !
Eleven goals in a game and six of them in favour of your team. Routine fayre if you’re a Baggie these days but more goals than seen at the Custard Bowl all season.
Another sloppy mistake from Pele, this time we were punished for it. Bring back Cesar with Barnett!
it makes me laugh that wolves fans are now logging on to e&s and pretending to be albion fans!!!!posting comments like mowbray out?? dont they make you laugh! jealous maybe??? i fink so…please all wolves fans get a life! BOING BOING - Mowbray = Genius!
I even more so pity the fans that left with 5 minutes of normal time left
I thought at times Pele & Barnett looked decent at the back, putting in some good headers & tackles. It was just when they were trying to play their way out of trouble, they looked a bit dodgey.
As for Sherjil, I thought the fans were getting onto him a bit too much. He fluffed the one header, but his other chance was a great save from their keeper. If he can get his confidence up and start running at defenders, he can cause problems.
Also, I can’t see why Mowbray’s showing such keeness to sign Miller over Bednar. One’s obviously the better player, and keener to play for the club….
what is he complaining about?
if we stopped playing gong hu then we may keep clean sheet or two once in while
we cant keep out scoring the opposition, this is what we tried last year and in the end it failed. we are the best team in the league on there day but also far from it if it doesnt all click straight away.
we need a defensive minded coach and not this idiot in
tony must go, hb i wish newcastle had got him now!!!
14 - PLEASE … not another day of you dingles pretending to be Albion fans.
Its pointless (no pun intended) and boring (again…no pun).
Grow up.
Tommy Gunn 9 - read 14 from one of your cranially challenged bretheren to see where the anti Mowbray rubbish is coming from.
YAWN !!
dirty nappie…..shut up fool
In TM we trust!
Dirty Nappy.
Are you the Express and Star editor by any chance?
Even 18 wasn’t me… I wouldn’t use that dingle rubbish to support our manager.
Come E&S - sort the idiots out.
Come out of the closet Dirty Nappie, You’re the Express and Star editor aren’t you?
Surely by now Happy_baggie has posted enough on here for E&S to be able to look at his email address and work out which one is the original & which one is the imposter.
I can work out easily enough just by looking at the tripe the other one writes, plus the original has a bit of humour about him (only a bit lol) the other has downs syndrome
have to agree with post 14 to be honest, good points being made there.
cut out the errors. but as for sacking tm are you guys mad? he is allah!
As admitted on the wolves pages - dirty/stinkey nappy & probably the false happy baggy are a moron who usually posts as raythewolf…
How proud he must be to be soooo clever.
Dingledom at its finest !
Happy……don`t forget its jobs night tonight….he he he
Happy - on what page in the Rule Book will I find “only Happy Baggie is allowed to be a wind up merchant” who gets crabby assed when anyone else tries it on. And then resorts to snide comments as his mask drops….
Happy…..he bites every time…. he he he
Dingles in disguise
Would’nt mind if your post’s showed wit and humour but they are rather sad and purile. They show a glaring lack of insight into the Baggies. Trying to promote some form of dialogue about getting rid of TM is almost laughable if it was not so pathetic
I dont mind you guys coming on here some of you show real wit and intelligence. Its the tedious and very boring posts we saw yesterday and today that do not even qualify as wind ups they are more like incontinent dribbling
Come on by all means but have something to say in your own name.
Albion wizards - don’t waste your breath.
The playground mentality means that you can’t win an argument with these morons so don’t bother.
Trouble is that real wolves fans get tarred with the same brush.
25 - pity it aint bath night… i bet you stink.
30…now happies got a mouth piece he he he
What’s gewin’ on? I find all this a bit negative. Cum on! We’m top of the league and gewin’ up. Let’s roast them Welsh shepsh*gg*rs on satdee and sing a few songs up the Brummie Road. Bit tighter in defense on occasion is all that’s needed, the rest is fine! “Oh when the Stripes - gew marchin’ in….”
Oooh Aaarrrrrr!
