Chaos after lorry sheds metal sheets

Traffic on Wolverhampton’s ring road ground to a halt this afternoon after an articulated lorry shed scores of metal sheets on to the carriageway.

Frustrated motorists driving towards the Penn Road Island at St John’s were delayed by up to 25 minutes as a result of the accident at 12.10pm.

Witness Terry Johnson, aged 52, of Willenhall, said: “These are the worst delays I’ve ever seen here. Loads of drivers started getting very frustrated and papping their horns non-stop because they couldn’t see what had happened.

“The lorry shed lots of metal sheets across the carriageway, stopping any of the cars from passing safely.

“This is one of the worst places it could have happened.”

Heath Town councillor Milkinder Jaspal described the scene as “absolute chaos”. He added: “It took me 25 minutes to get from Chapel Ash to the Penn Road. It was a nightmare.”

One lane remained closed at 1.30pm, with the lorry and around 40 metal sheets recovered from the accident placed to one side by police just in front of the Fox Hotel.

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Catherine Preece said: “Police were called to the scene following reports of a lorry losing its load. “Traffic barriers were damaged as a result and traffic congested. The ring road remained congested while load was recovered.”

The accident comes after another lorry overturned near an island on the Black Country Route yesterday, shedding hundreds of magazines.

The island at the A463 Armstrong Way which links to the busy carriageway was littered with magazines including Nuts, FHM and Woman’s Own after the articulated lorry tipped over at around 12.30am. The A463 Black Country Route was closed outbound at the Darlaston Lane junction while a huge clean-up operation was launched, causing traffic to build up as far back as Bilston Town Football Club on Queen Street.
