Walsall blog: Full blooded Saddlers

Another week, another two games, another full blooded performance from the Mighty Saddlers…I could actually be writing about any week from the last two months, writes Walsall blogger Mark Jones.

I suppose I could have a moan about conceding two goals in a minute and looking a bit uncomfortable from set pieces but that would be unfair on the lads.

In the end either side could have won it and claimed to have deserved to, it was that kind of end to end game.

The character and spirit of this current team were demonstrated by the immediate response to falling behind, Troy Deeney’s persistence to win the ball back in the build up to the first goal and the brace from Mr. Sunshine himself.

It’s fair to say that Eddy hasn’t quite matched his form of early on in the season, so just to see him get into goal scoring positions was encouraging, never mind the two goals.

There is more to this team than just it’s battling qualities though.

Mark Bradley’s pinpoint cross for the equaliser and run into the box for the opener, Alex Nicholls’s willingness to run at opposing defenders and some top notch defending from Richard Taundry all caught the eye on Saturday.

A special mention should be made for Wracky too, at the present moment I think Michael Dobson would struggle to dislodge Darren from that central midfield spot.

His composure, experience, leadership and ability to pick out a searching pass are qualities that have been missing from our midfield for years.

So Colchester looks like being the next destination for the talents of Dan Fox.

To answer my own question of a week ago, the grass seems to be that yellowy brown colour you get in the middle of a drought but it is a move to a higher level (for now anyway) so who am I to scoff?

The £350,000 fee looks a bit on the low side to me, especially as selling club Luton have received double that for selling one of their blokes to a mid table Championship club.

Let’s just hope that if the deal goes ahead, we do better in the transfer market than we have done in the last two Januarys … actually scrub that, we couldn’t do much worse.

It was a great shame to hear that on the anniversary of our greatest ever F.A. Cup triumph, Walsall lost one of it’s finest ever servants in Ron Jukes.

He discovered many fine players for us and was hugely respected throughout the game.

My mom worked for Ron for a time and I met him on a number of occasions, I know he always followed the Saddlers closely. A sad loss indeed.
