hockey.jpgThe region’s hockey players returned to action at the weekend after the Christmas break and Lichfield started with a defeat in the men’s Midland Regional Hockey Association Premier League.

They were beaten 1-0 at home by Worcester and are now seventh in the League, 15 points behind leaders Harborne.

Walsall’s match at Burton in Midlands One was postponed, but a full programme took place in the West Midlands Premier where Wolverhampton moved into third place with a 2-1 win at Kidderminster.

Wolves leapfrogged Finchfield, who slipped to fourth after they suffered a 5-0 defeat at second placed Warwick University.

The remaining two local sides in the division faced each other and Old Wulfrunians ran out 3-1 victors at home to Wednesbury thanks to goals from Tom Pickersgill, John Turner and Neil Dillon.

Old Wulfs soon went ahead from a short corner by Pickersgill but the visitors got back into the game and equalised just before half time. After a tactical change, Old Wulfs moved the ball well and began to overwhelm Wednesbury. Turner hit the home side’s second and Neil Dillon completed the victory.

In West Midlands One, Old Halesonians’ match with Old Silhillians was called off and they drop to third as a consequence.

Bloxwich moved ahead of West Bromwich into fifth place in the table with a 2-0 home win over second bottom Newtown, while West Bromwich suffered a defeat in a high scoring encounter at the hands of League leaders Kings Heath Pickwick. West Brom lost 7-4 and slip to sixth.

Rugeley’s struggles continued as they lost 3-0 to second placed Bromsgrove and remain rooted to the bottom of the table with one point to their name.

There were plenty of goals in West Midlands Two and Kingswinford moved into third with an 8-4 win over Aston University.

Chaddesley Corbett enjoyed a 10-0 victory over Aldridge. The huge win was their first of the campaign, but they remain bottom of the table with four points.

Stafford earned a point with a 1-1 draw at Barlaston and remain in eighth place.
