Wolves boss Mick McCarthy justified his decision to substitute new striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake by claiming the £1.5 million man was tired.
The decision to replace Ebanks-Blake was greeted by a chorus of boos as Wolves slipped to a 3-0 defeat against Crystal Palace.
“The fans have not agreed with one or two of my substitutions lately, but I’m big enough and ugly enough to put up with that,” said McCarthy.
“Sylvan Ebanks-Blake had driven up and down the motorway twice from Plymouth and I thought he looked knackered. That is not the correct preparation.”
McCarthy claimed the scoreline was harsh on Wolves but admitted he was under pressure.
He added: “I don’t think the scoreline reflects the performance of the team given the amount of chances we had. But we contrived not to put the ball in the net.
“I’ve been here and seen this before and I know when things are not going well the manager’s decisions will be questioned.
“The grumbling doesn’t bother me but I don’t like it when it’s aimed at the players.
“It doesn’t help them play any better and they are still all working hard to turn things around for the club.
“We have got to stick together and make things change. Not hope that they do - make sure they do.”

Wolves invested in Eastwood and Jarvis in the summer, excellent signings. Now another good signing in Ebanks Blake.
But still the likes of Bothroyd and Ward are the ones that get to start. And when we need a goal he takes off the man we have spent £1.5million on to score goals.

Am I the only one who could see this coming? We buy players for pittance last season and make do with free signings but still expect to make the play offs this season based on the last 5 months of last years campaign. WHY? We can all argue about micks selections and players playing out of position and chopping and changing of stikers but ultimately bar 3/4 players we have a VERY average squad. The latest signings merely add to the numbers NOT i’m afraid the quality.
As for todays performance i’ve just got this to say. If Blake had been driving up and down the motorway between Wolves and Plymouth what on earth was ahem ’super’ mick doing picking him from the start against palace. I’m not surprised he was knackered. Perhaps bringing him on at half time for one of our other inept strikers would have been a more sensible option!!

I am and always have been against any so called “fans” getting at players or the Manager, it only makes things worse and plays into the hands of the other side, but PLEASE if our new star striker/ player is tired after driving to Plymouth twice then God help us and our manager, giving this as his excuse for taking him off is beyond belief. Perhaps his new car is the £1200 Tata I wish!!!, or should it be tata to all of these so called footballers and managers who are rewarded for failure.

It is plain for all to see that MM tactics is questionable and the results do not lie! What we need is to have a team of good quality backroom staff to mould the current crop of exciting players (most are in their early 20s) and maybe next season we are up for it.
This season is a write off now.

I feel sorry for the people of Wolverhampton - my birth town - who love and are passionate about their club. So much promise, every week. Promises that for decades have been broken.
I have always been a big fan of MM, for the 1st time we had a straight forward honest manager who told it like it is.
Last season we had a small squad who gave 110% a team built from young players coming through our youth policy.
Players like Little, Hennessey, Jones and Gobern all impressed at various stages. We played with energy, pace and a fair amount of style and very often we where successful, to finish 5th did not flatter us.
When MM took over there where a lot of similarities between us and the Sunderland team MM took over and like us he got them in the play offs in his 1st season, in his second MM’s Sunderland won the championship fairly comfortably and to be honest I half expected the same for us this season.
I cant believe the difference from this season to last season, last season played players in position there was balance in the team and we created loads of chances. This season we are playing players out of position, creating next to nothing, playing poor football, and not winning football matches.
I used to think and still do think that our academy was one of the best kept secrets in the country, all the pundits raved about Arsenal, Man U and Wet Hams academies, but look at some of the quality we have produced Keane, Lescott, Murray, Hennessey to name but a few, Gobern, Gleeson, Little and Dan Jones came through last season, why are they being given a chance this season.
Why is Mark Davies not even in the squad when fit surely he would have made a difference in recent weeks.
MM is being loyal to the wrong players (Bothroyd, Collins etc) and our season is seriously in danger of ending in disaster.
Mick take your blinkers off and consider playing the young players who did so well for us last season, play players in position, play football we did last season, play with at least one winger, consider Mark Davies or Denes Rosa when fit.
Lat season was a pleasure to watch, but this season has been poor and uninspiring.
Yesterday on this blog I wrote I wanted you to go but history suggests sacking you might not necessarily be the solution. We need continuity and long term stability. I have always believed whoever gets it right will see how big and successful this club can be, we have the financial backing, stadium, training and academy facilities and most importantly a fan base a lot of clubs can only dream of, some fans think because of these things we have a divine right to be successful we dont. Last season I felt this was the start of something special, however the events of this season has caused me to change that view.
Mick have a long hard think this week how you are going to turn things around we are currently stand at a crossroads we can go one of two ways, mid table mediocrity in the championship or you drag this club kicking and screaming back into play off contention, hopefully we will choose the latter.
Is the picture final proof of MM’s dementure, as he joins in with the Wolves fans, screaming “McCarthy Out”?
Mick its simple, play players in position, play players who create and realise 15 or 16 players you choose from are not doing it.
Give the likes of Mark Davies, Lewis Gobern, Steven Gleeson, Denes Rosa a chance.
Bring back Mark Little and Dan Jones from their loan spells.
Start playing football, not hoofing the ball aimlessly long.
Last season you where creative and open to change, what has changed this season.
You have undone a lot of the good work you and the team did last season, despite what a lot of fans think this season is not lost there is a lot of football to play this season.
Please Please sort it out and quick or you will be another failed manager here at Wolves

i posted on here yesterday that a new striker would make no difference at all and how right i was. This team is heading only one way and another away defeat and we are in for a relegation battle. It is awful to watch and McCarthys comments stagger me , abiut Blake, he had to fravel up and down the motorway ? he looked teriffic in training but today he looked leggy ? , what an absolute load of rubbish!! He had no service at all and was simply put up front and expected to get on to long punts up field. How is ward playing week in and week out ?. When Jarvis came on there was an instant change but that was forced on mcCarthy due to Gibsons injury. I looked back last night over our results for the season and we are extremly lucky not to be in the bottom three. Mr. Morgan please step forward and do what any decent CEO has to do and replace the Manager. Promotion has gone now so let’s give a new face a few months to work with what we have and spend the summer rebuilding.

McCarthy thought he looked knackered! You know what this means, SEB was not putting in a shift, give MM and the backroom a few weeks and they will have SEB full of energy and enthusiasm.
Unfortunately as a direct result of this absurd need to chase everyone and everything regardless of the ball’s position on the pitch, SEB will no longer be waiting up front for a through ball, he will no longer be anticipating a pass from which to score. Instead he will be running around like a headless chicken, without intention and no longer the goal threat he has been (another Elliot).
Please Mick, SEB was not tired from a couple of car journeys, he was just doing what he knows best. Waiting, anticipating, getting ready to score!

I know its tough for MM to say something new about another poor performance.However he is to blame as his team selection at the start of play was so negativeand lacked any genuine creative or wide player.
This resulted in another pass and hoof first half which created very little until the forced introduction of Jarvis who immediately created an opening.
The big difficulty for me is 1 paid £116.00 for 4 tickets and IMHO failed to see any football from us until the second batch of substitutions. MMs negative approach and persistance in playing
certain favourites is going to cost him his job and us promotion. We have the squad, just tactics and style of play this year has been Hoddlesque at best and i gave up my 4 season tickets when he was still in place as i watch Wolves and expect to be entertained not bored senseless by hoof it or pass it back and sideways football with no penetration.
I agree with the moans at the match being out of order but when you watch for example Elliott fail to control the ball up front time after time and watch our attacks breakdown what are your options when the Manager has rose tinted spectacles and has definetely lost his wand.

Having followed the Wolves for the best part of my life, and having spent thousands over the years on season tickets etc etc, i feel that i have a right to voice my opinion, at the players and or manager. I certainly do not get paid thousands a week as do the majority of our current first team. The simpkle fact is that the game is run through ££ and the players i feel do not put the most into the club or the games week in week out. MM should be sacked or leave…NOW…and the players should start being men and play to earn their huge wage. I work ten times harder than any one of those players and do not earn a fraction of what they do in a WEEK!!That is not their fault, what i am suggesting is that if i were to be offered the money they are on, i would certainly put in ten times the effort, and not put it down to being tired or having played too many games that week…rubbish..

Although the players keep backing Mick in the press, I think they don’t respect him anymore and know he will be gone before they are. They just seem clueless, lacklustre and almost bored of playing football. I think it would take a fantastic manager to turn this round and MM is not fantastic. 1, Bothroyd has talent but no workrate.S Ward has graft but no skill at this level. Darren Ward cannot direct a header back up the park, and for some reason, the bulk of the team cannot play a forward incisive pass, only sideways. We need a settled front line. Blake up front with freddy behind him, playing Jarvis, would see results, but the problem lies not having a proper bloke in midfield, maybe Edwards will make a difference. Mick, is a good manager as proved last year playing our kids, but this favoiurite set ofg players will get you out of this job at the end of the season Mick. 12th at best.

83 comments so far and only one backing MM. But week-in, week-out money paying football fans are always taken for granted so this not-so-silent majority doesn’t matter in the slightest in terms of whether he stays or goes.
We’re stuck with him for this season. FACT. Morgan would not have sanctioned 2.2m of his hard earned if he was planning to sack him before the end of the season. That is one hell of a chuck out of our annual cashflow.
The main problems, aside from the team being low in confidence and form at the moment, do tend to relate to the manager. Mick seems to believe that everyone has it in for him. That’s not the case Mick - you must learn to live without that self-placed chip on your shoulder. It’s not big and it’s not clever. Most people boo at the situation (being outplayed at the Molineux by an “inferior” side and not making the changes in tactics required to recover) not the individuals - your constant tripe of how you wish fans would moan at you and not at players is nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to turn players against the fans. You are employed by WWFC and handsomely paid. Stop working for Mick McCarthy plc.
You can’t help but feel that this was a ready made excuse in case we lost. Sure there have been moans and groans towards certain players not putting in the effort or simply not having the quality. If we pay c.500K for someone that is dross whilst we have a player come through the youth system in the same position that then gets farmed out to a lower division team then that’s your fault.
Daniel Jones, for example, looked interesting last season on the left side of midfield. This is not a cheap pop at Ward but if you pay money for players that can’t do better (especially if you’re playing them out of position) then you, as the decision maker has cocked up. Just like you did when you sent Jody on loan and, lo-and-behold, once the South Bank piped up with the “One Jody Craddock” song, you brought him back. His reappearance in the Gold and Black, as opposed to the colours of a side that was always going to be one of our rivals for promotion/play off spots this season, coincided with our good, if somewhat fortunate, run this season.
Our best run last season coincided with Henry reverting to right back, Edwards playing centre half (his best position) with Breen out and Jackie Mac at left back. That meant not playing two defensive midfielders. We could play a variety of 4-3-3 and 4-2-4 with McIndoe and Kightly as the wide men. Sides worried when we attacked them; fans were entertained.
This season can best be summed up as an attempt by the manager to rid himself of demons and prove that he’s half the manager he thinks he is (which would equate to twice the manager that most footballing people think he is). He’s failed miserably - and to try and cover this up, he’s blaming the fans. His interview on MOTD after coming from behind to win a cup tie at home by an 88th minute winner against a non-league side was embarrassing. No praise for a side some 86 places or so below us - instead more diatribe about how the world is against him. Not WWFC but MM. Contrast that with the comments from the previous game shown on MOTD and the noble comments from a certain Dave Jones - who has a right to have a chip on his shoulder following the way he was treated in his past.
We’re stuck with him, we might scrape through the playoffs. He’s probably done enough to encourage Kites to sign for the first prem team to come in for him next summer. And possibly Hennessey. We’ll mostly be at the Mol, god willing, in 10 years time. MM will be spouting the same crap somewhere else - still blaming the world for his shortcomings.

from the start of the season we have been waiting and expecting the team to kickstart their season and go on a run of winning games, each week it doesn’t happen and we go well maybe next game, but we are now in january and it hasn’t happened. i feel now its not going to and if anything we could be drawn into a relegation battle.
the problems in the team have been obvious to everyone again from the start of the season.
1/picking favourites who frankly aren’t good enough.
2/no tactics or creative ideas, formations etc
3/playing players out of position
4/micks man mangement i.e eastwoods treatment and now latest signing SEB
5/loaning out our good young homegown talent and let them relace our underperformers.
6/buying quantity not quality/experience
i could go on with loads more and without kightly, hennesey and the games we have scraped a win in we would be in real trouble. i think now we are the leagues lowest scorers why? it must be to do with mick and his backroom teams methods. he honestly seems to have no idea how to turn it around and solve the problems. mick has to go now asap.

Well what to say. Again I go to Molineux hoping to see this team turn things around and again I’m left feeling disappointed & frustrated. I don’t believe they can, but I hope I’m wrong. These players should feel very embarassed and should all publicaly apologise to the fans for their inept performances this season. They are making our club a laughing stock, not just in the Midlands with our local rivels, but throughout the entire football community. Other clubs are laughing at us and come here knowing they can play with the minimum of effort and walk away with the points.
When is MM gonna realise that Collins is completely out of his depth. I’m sick of watching this guy balls things up all the time. Yet again we see him give away a sloppy free kick which leads to us conceeding a goal. Bothroyd should just be sacked full stop. He is a complete disgrace as a “professional” footballer.
The whole team should be docked their wages after this game. Having said that I think the only one who played well was Jarvis and why oh why MM does not play him every game is completely beyond me.

Enough is enough, the facts speak for themselves.
Here’s just a few in no particular order: -
1.Craddock booted out to Stoke, taken back and made captain
2. Eastwood purchased £1.5m not given a run in the side, now a bit part substitute
3. Elliot purchased £1.2m too slow, lightweight not even in the squad on Saturday
4. Gibson poor has made no improvement to the team. He actually is so similar to and is actually worse than Potter who cost £500,000 and made his first appearance of the season on Saturday
5. Potter see above
6. S Ward arrived as centre forward but hasn’t played there for ages and is played out of position in place of Jarvis. He is slow and unimaginitive and has not scored a goal for ages
7. D Ward limited but dogged. £700,000 doesn’t seem to get you a lot these days. Fell foul to fickle management by being dumped within weeks of arriving
8. Jarvis purchased for £650,000 but appears not to know where to play. If he was bought to replace Mcindoe he hasn’t and looks better playing on the right in Kightly’s position????
9. Young players who made an impression last year (out of necessity) have been ousted callously and replaced by poor quality additions eg Gray (although he is willing he is a defensive aberation) What must the likes of Little, Jones, Gleeson, Gobern, Davies be thinking?
10. Rosa was scoring goals for fun in the reserves earlier in the season when goals in the first team have been as rare as rockin horse doo da and he has been nowhere near a squad
11. The style of play is tedious consisting of give it to Collins hoist it over the centre back, watch their goalkeeper collect it. How much longer do we have to put up with such dull, unimaginitive tactics?
12. Bothroyd, by the Manager’s own admission was on his way out earlier this year is now the primary striker despite looking lethargic, slow and just plain hopeless
13. The team is built in the managers image.. dour, stubborn, boring, 23 goals scored in 27 league games is a hanging offence in my view.
14. I could go on all bloody day but I got to do some work
So the question is, what to do..
Here’s some thoughts: -
McCarthy has now set in motion the sacking cycle by criticising the fans. This will turn them against him vocally. The pressure will be on the board to sack him which they will do. A new manager will be appointed and the cycle will repeat. One constant feature has been the CEO who has presided over a catalogue of failure and under-achievement. The time has come to change the man at the helm too Steve…. Molineux expects otherwise all those well earned millions from the Redrow years will be wasted and a period of waste, decay and cutback will ensue.
There’s a clamour for Ince, a movement for Alladyce but frankly I don’t have a clue who the manager should be.. that’s your job and I expect you to get it right otherwise you can join the failure brigade who have come and gone just recently and left us the laughing stock (along with Newcastle)of the football world.
So Steve, be brave, be decisive and most of all be right as I’m sick of being a Wolves fan at the moment and even worse, so is my 9 year old boy who thinks booing at football matches is normal. He’s the future and represents your target market for years to come. Football is meant to be entertainment so take a word of advice (unsolicited I realise) and get rid of the grey one along with your under achieving CEO and really make a difference.

Well said I was sitting next to a fan who booed Jay and I had a right go at him. I could understand his frustration at the way Jay was playing, if he was to spend more time on his feet than on his backside he might get the support, but he was not the only player that did not perform. I suggest we get a vicar into the ground and exorcise both goals as there appears to something that is stopping the goals going in cause it aint for the want of trying. I don’t think sacking MM is going to help. I was appalled at the way some of the fans left the ground 20mins for the final whistle. No matter what and no matter how frustrating it is no one should leave the ground before the final whistle. Crystal Palace fans were laughing at us.
they say in football the league never lies and neither do goals scored - the best stats are for freddie Eastwood and Ebanks Blake so surely they shoud start every game. Keogh’s movement is fantastic but his goal ration isn’t so play him behind the strikers. Jay Both has to go as does Stephen Ward - ok when we had no money and have done their best - but not now as they’re both not really up to it.
i think we need a new coach, Connor for me just isn’t good enough. Buy sadler from Blues at left back - we are still only a young side and only just outside of playooffs - getting rid of MM isn’t the answer - maybe getting off their backs will help as last season the team did perform better when we supported them - even when 6 down against Saints.

Moxey has had seasons of failures and bad decisions - granted he got one or two things right, but the vast majority have steered our club into the rudderless position we now find ourselves in today!!!
Mr Moxey in our view has made himself fairly wealthy at the Wolves - whilst we have no objections to anyone benefitting from the clubs successes on the field of play - What real success has this man ever brought the club? One unexpected promotion via the play offs and then what?

Second season disaster again, just like Glenn Hoddle. Mick has totally and utterly lost the plot. We have Karl Henry and Stephen Ward on the wing, WHY OH WHY? Neill Collins is the worst player in the league, why cant Rob Edwards get a game? Why doesnt Freddy Eastwood start? Exactly what position is Jay Bothroyd supposed to be playing in? Why dont Mark Davies and Stephen Gleeson get anywhere near the side?
Mick wont drop his favourites, and because of that, we are going to continue going backwards. We wont make the play-offs, we wont do anything this season, and if we arent careful, we could be in a relegation battle come March. I cant even see where the next win is going to come from, i really cant. And God help us if West Brom were to come to Wolves in the next week or so, because they would rip us to shreads.
Time to give Mick his P45. We havent played well at Molineux since the Charlton game, and that was in October. Sorry Mick, its not good enough. Mick has lost the plot now. As much as he is a good manager he’s makin the fans boo them. When the wolves fans booed new years day its because he took Keogh off, mick says he had a chest infection, no offense but you dow start him! same with Ebanks-blake. Mick says he’s been up and down the motoway for two days, same again you dont start him, so Mick is asking for the boos. At the end of the day we aint gunna get big sam so we cant fool our selves so we hav gtu bide time as fans and help the team out, even if they are as good as a chocolate fireguard!
