Wolves striker set for debut

ebanksblake.jpgBoss Mick McCarthy today hailed the double signing swoop which he hopes will help add the missing spark to his Wolves team.

Wolves have already completed of signing of Plymouth striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake - and the 21-year-old goes straight into McCarthy’s plans for tomorrows Molineux clash with Crystal Palace.

And the club were also tying up a deal for Luton’s former Shrewsbury midfielder David Edward for £675,000 which is likely to be completed in the next 24 hours.

Both fit the “young and hungry” profile which continues to be the core requirement of the McCarthy era and the manager is relishing the impact the two players can make.

“Having managed teams that have played against Sylvan, I always thought he was a threat,” said McCarthy.

“He scores goals, he’s a box player, strong and quick - and he is scoring goals at the moment and is fit for consideration tomorrow.

“David we have been aware of since he played for Shrewsbury where I quite liked him when I saw him playing out wide.

“He’s been doing well with Luton and the performance that we all saw against Liverpool last week backed up the scouting reports that we had.

“It was an opportunity to take him, sad for Luton because of their predicament but to our advantage”.

The arrival of Ebanks-Blake brings to five the total of senior strikers now on the Molineux payroll - and that is not including flexible front man Stephen Ward.

But the newcomer’s appearance does not come hand-in-hand with a plan to sell any of them - although McCarthy acknowledges keeping everyone happy will be difficult.

“It creates a challenge for each and everyone of them - but I haven’t brought him in with a plan to sell somebody else,” added McCarthy.

“The challenge is there for each to get in their side, to be at their best and to score goals. The best ones will play.”

Ebanks-Blake has got his career back in motion after leaving Manchester United 17 months ago for £200,000.

Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock was prepared to make him the highest paid player in the club’s history but admitted: “He was so determined to join Wolves he would not even discuss a new deal with us.”

Great news on the lad, lets get behind the team and start to climb this table knocking out all the so called teams at the top. Wolves now can at least score goals, and goals win matches…we all know that?

    “Blakey, Blakey, Blakey, Blakey !”

Lets hope we are all singing this tomorrow when he scores. At the end of the day no just anyone gets a run in at the reds (man U) he be good, hence his tally for this season

    Come on the Wolves!

Interesting who will he play up front? Bothroyd and Elliot?

Such a good player. More signings of this quality and Mad Mick must surely once again become Super Mick in the eyes of the doubters.

    Bring on Palace.

This could be two great signings for the Wolves. Young and hungry again. Can I apologise on behalf of Mick that he could not supply you negative types with more ammunition, but he has run out of favourites, ex-Sunderland and Irish players for the moment. He has promised though, that he will strive to look further afield if things work out well with Welsh and ex-Man Utd players. Mind you, there won’t be too much difficulty for you. There will ALWAYS be something you can whinge about.

Hope these signings kick start the rest of your season SEB is a very lively striker and should do well.

Will be interested to see who lines up in mid field to provide that vital “missing link” between defence and forwards.

Should make for an interesting rest of season

  9. Tamworth Wolf said:

The two signings appear to be good business, With SEB he has the pedigree as he started at Man U

I like the look of Edwards judging by his desplay against Liverpool in he cup.

I see we have been linked with Cris Commons of Forest again, A creative midfielder who scores goals, I like everyone else would like to see Mark Davies and Steven Gleeson given a go but if we can get Commons I would be happy.

One other point lets give the new signings a chance and start to be a bit more positive about the club.

Some the rantings on here are nasty, vicious and unhelpful. Lets make Molineux loud and proud tomorrow and sent Neil Warnock back to London With nothing.

Spanishwolf, the clue in your name “may” suggest you live in spain and perhaps dont see wolves often enough. Fans have a divided opinion on MM, and his style of play but ALL WOLVES FANS are behind the club. My so called rants are not personal, I think that MM is a one trick pony and is guilty of defending his so called favourites and not giving a boost to the likes of Freddie who needs a arm around his shoulder rather than having a go at him in the press!

On a positive spin at least he is addressing the problem areas of goalscorer. I just wish he drops Elliott & Ward who are in my OPINION are not good enough in this team…. WOEFUL.

    ANOTHER STRIKER !

Do we really need a striker ? All strikers thrive on SERVICE……. no service = no goals ………
PRIORITY = Get someone in central midfield, who can create chances, I think we were “rumbled” big time this season, all our opponents know we only have service from our wide players. ( S Ward apart ! )

Ebanks-Blake is a great buy… but so was Eastwood. I hope they both manage to find (and keep) form for us.
Looking forward to seeing what Edwards can do, he seems to have a lot of positive reports floating round about him.

I’m sure we are still to see the best of Eastwood and Jarvis (he’s looked promising at times since his late start to the season) and Kightly seems to be well on the mend, so maybe we can do the same as as last year and kick on from now until the end of the season. I’d still like to see more quality cover for the back four (we’ve struggled without Craddock) and midfield but I’m still convinced our season is far from over. There aren’t that many points between us and the baggies!

It will be interesting to see how the new lad settles in if we start booing and chanting against Mick tomorrow. Come on, lets support our team as we did last season against Southampton. Win or lose they need the help of the twelfth man at Molineux.

I am really pleased about the singing but I felt the same way when we brought Keogh , Eastwood & Elliot. It goes back to the issue of service from the midfield and flanks. We need a pacy winger who can beat people and someone who can score from midfield. We need to get stuck into Palace early tomorrow, theyre a young team who are full of energy and teamwork (like we were last season).

Ward, Bothroyd, Keogh, Elliott, Eastwood. 5 strikers all bought to the club by Mick. Only one of the five in the chaotic period at the start of last season. So the fact he’s had to go out and buy another tells you something.

You’re all assuming he’ll start with SEB tomorrow. And if he does will he give him sufficient games to settle in.

Why do we need to buy another midfielder when we haven’t given Rosa, Davies, Gleeson, Gobern etc a look in all season. I presume the latter 3 aren’t young and hungry then. Fact : there isn’t any creativity in central midfield or left wing when Ward plays. But for God sake give these players a chance. Then we can get rid if they prove not to be good enough rather than pay them a weekly wage for doing diddly squat. Is this why Evans left. Because he could see all his hard work being wasted and ignored.

The fact I’m still moaning proves I’m not FICKLE.

How easily some people get carried away, lets wait and see if these two signings (or singings according to billy bull) make any difference. What I was trying to say but it didn’t print

Best strikers at club based on goals per game played this season

    1. S Elliott - pl 11 goals 4 36%
    2. F Eastwood - pl 12 goals 4 33%
    3. J Bothroyd - Pl 13 goals 3 23%
    4. M Kightly - pl 18 goals 4 22%
    5. A Keough - pl 21 goals 3 14%
    6. S Ward - pl 23 goals 0 0%

    new man
    1. S E B - pl 23 goals 13 56%

So perhaps Elliott isn’t as bad as we all think after all?

It would be more fickle of we MM detractors to suddenly start revising our opinion just because he signed SEB and Edwards.

I spoke to 2 Plymouth season ticket holders yesterday and opinion was sharply divided as to SEB’s departure. For him to leave so quickly and to a club below his own does not give total confidence that if things don’t work out for him and/or the club, he’ll hang around for long. Is there a trigger clause in his contract with us?!

Secondly, it is the style of play, approach, odd team selection and man management that we have criticised and that doesn’t go away just because he’s signed 2 potentially good players. On a human level, I hope it does work and I’m proved wrong - good luck to MM and the new players - but the concerns we so-called “fickle fans” have stem from over half a season of under-achievement,dross and the haphazard strategy to try and put things right.

Give us a team that is set up to attack and entertain as well as keep a clean sheet and “putting in a shift” and we’ll get behind it whoever the Manager is….and I’ll wear the sarong if it makes you feel better!
