Bin tax: It’s a load of rubbish

full-bin1.jpgBin tax? How dare they! writes blogger Charlie Cashdan.

I simply can’t believe the latest brazen show of audacity by our government!  They now plan to push through yet another stealth tax, this time involving rubbish collection.

It has been proposed that householders should be charged a pay-as-you-throw bin tax.  I’m sorry if I’m being a bit stupid here but could someone just remind me what the council tax is for again?

It’s just that I thought it included rubbish collection, how silly and naive of me!

How clever of the government to find a new way of taxing us and justifying it by saying it’s our own fault for throwing away too much rubbish and not being green enough.

In fact, they actually claim to be doing us a favour by arguing that it will be better for the environment whist laughing all the way to the bank with our hard earned money!

All it will actually do is increase fly tipping, the rat population, the amount of nasty toxic smells in the air and probably the maggot population too.

If my rubbish was collected weekly like it always was (council tax has gone up, the service it’s meant to include has gone down – how clever of them!) then I wouldn’t have waste hanging over the top of my bin and multiple bin bags all over the pavement on bin day!

I live in a terrace house that opens onto the pavement so all my rubbish builds up in the back garden for two weeks and then has to be carried through the house dripping foul nasties all over the floor and then left on the pavement to be collected.  If only they came weekly then we wouldn’t have this horrible accumulation of stuff attracting all the local pests every night and rotting away outside my back door.

Instead, we now have to go to the tip every weekend in our car (how environmentally friendly is that?!) to dispose of the rancid pile ourselves because the council can’t be bothered anymore.

The tax would be so unfair on families and multiple occupancy households too as they would naturally accumulate more rubbish.

I would be very happy to try harder at recycling if someone would explain how to use the coloured boxed and the boxes and bins were collected weekly together.

Why oh why oh why can the council not collect the recycling boxes and the bin at the same time every week?  Why must one week be for recycling and one for rubbish?

No one likes this, it’s confusing, impractical if you don’t have storage for all these boxes (if you can’t put them under cover in your garden it all just becomes a nasty mush) and in some areas of the country people are even paying private collection firms to collect weekly.

It’s simple to fix, just come every week (it’s what we pay our council taxes for) pick up the bin, put it’s contents in the truck, then go back and pick up the recycling boxes.  A little more effort required perhaps and possibly slightly different equipment, but as council tax has gone up every year since time began this should cover the extra strain.

This will encourage everyone to recycle because it will be taken out the way before it piles up and we won’t feel like we are being punished for recycling by having our weekly rubbish collection taken away as a result.

We also won’t be throwing so much away each time; there will be less fly tipping, less cars driving to the local tip and less rats.  Oh, and no justification for a bin tax of course.

Everyone wins except the local council and of course we can’t have that now can we?

All recycling does is try and make people think good of themselves for wanting to help save the planet. Its makes bugger all difference thanks to the USA and China, so in the end everyone is being conned yet again.

The government/councils should encourage people to recycle by offering incentive schemes and rewards.

Guard you bin with your life in the future, as you’ll be responsible for everything that goes in it, even though someone else probably filled it.

May I make the following suggestion.

Take note of your local rules regarding the burning of garden rubbish !

You may find that you are allowed to burn gtarden refuse after certain hours during the week, and if by chance you happen to mistake a bag or two of houshold refuse for garden stuff then its too bad isn’t it. I’m sure you will worry about having a few bags of rubbish going up in smoke won’t you?

Succsessive labour & tory goverments have destroyed our nation at the expense of their own people. tax after tax after tax, yet who benefits, certainly not the people who pay it. this country needs grabbing by the scruff of the neck and serious changes made to how it’s run. last year millions of pounds was sent to the third world in aid, yet the number of children living in poverty in this country rose by 25%. just one example of how british tax payers are forced to pay extortionate rates of tax, andthis country sees no benefit from any of it. teenage gangs roaming the streets killing indiscrimately, the national health service in crisis, pensioners treated like second class citizens, and so on. but hey that doesn’t matter, keep screwing motorists, charge a new tax on rubbish, and we’ll all live happy ever after.. not!!!

For each person to tries to do good by the world, there are 50 others who don’t. China is a nightmare, my daugher was over there late last year and the air pollution is disgraceful, most ppl were wearing masks for protection against it.

makes you laugh, the council put our council tax up, give us rubbish services and drone on about recycling, yet when they send us tenants newsletters its not printed on recycled paper, and its glossy so you cant recycle it!! maybe we should demand a rebate for recycling their own crap………

This Labour government is an absolute disgrace,it is high time the people of this “once” great nation got a strangle hold on this government nationaly and localy that has got us all held to ransom. their complete lack of judgement and mismanagent is a burden to all. This Labour Council have yet again managed to increase our Council Tax by 4.75%, that’s 155.4% in 14 years of control, they have increased rents by 18% in 17 months and Labour’s budget change of abolishing the 10% tax band and then conning their own Labour ministers into a u-turn just goes to show how uncaring and money orientated they really are, “socialism” really is dead!
