Walsall boss lines up midfielder

Walsall manager Richard MoneyWalsall boss Richard Money has lined up a replacement for Peter Sweeney following the midfielder’s exit to promotion rivals Leeds.

Money is keeping the new recruit under wraps while he waits for the January transfer chain to activate the deal.

But the Saddlers boss, anxious to keep his flourishing League One squad at full strength, confirmed today a loan deal is in his sights.

“I will replace Sweeney but the loan market is very difficult and requires things to happen elsewhere which will affect your plans,” said Money today.

“I really don’t want there to be too much activity this January.

“For us, January is about battening down the hatches and fighting everybody off who have an eye on our players.

“The loan market is open until March and I think it’s reasonable to assume there will be players coming in at times to help us out.”

Money, who has seen his side rise to fifth with a remarkable 17-match unbeaten run, repeated his warning to Leeds that they will not be getting their second Walsall target, Daniel Fox cheaply.

Fox, who handed in a transfer request this week and is expected to be sold before the window closes, has been the subject of two bids so far from the Elland Road club.

Money said today: “There is interest in Daniel but nothing new to report.”

Fox will find out just how his transfer request has played with the Walsall public when he lines up in Money’s team for Saturday’s clash with Swindon at the Banks’s Stadium.
