Police invade stand in Wolves clash

female-officer.jpgViolence erupted at Wolves’ FA cup match, prompting police to invade one of the stands.

The disorder broke out among some Cambridge United fans in the Jack Harris stand known as South Bank, where Wolves fans were also seated.

Home supporters say some of the rival team’s followers clashed with stewards and police during the second half of Wolves’ 2-1 win on Saturday.

One said: “The clash happened when Cambridge were still 1-0 up and on the verge of an upset.

“A small section started fighting with stewards at the top of the Jack Harris stand next to the no-man’s land that separates home and away fans.

“From my position in the Billy Wright stand, the stewards received several blows before the West Midlands Police helped.

“It’s a shame these fans were allowed to buy tickets. Thankfully no one was hurt.”

The club today said it gave Cambridge United seats in both the Steve Bull lower tier and Jack Harris stand because of FA rules.

Wolves had to allocate the away side 15 per of the 28,500 Molineux capacity and used two stands to avoid giving up the whole of the boisterous South Bank to the opposition.

Wolves spokeswoman Lorraine Hennessey said: “Under FA rules we have to allow 15 per of the ground to be given up to away fans for FA cup games.

“It depends on how many they bring, but if they bring a lot we spread it out over two stands.”

West Midlands Police spokesman Steve Garey said: “There was some minor disorder but no arrests or ejections were made.”

Cambridge United was holding talks with Wolves this afternoon on how the match went.
