Leeds to pinch Walsall loan star

SweeneyLeague One rivals Leeds continued to cast a shadow over Walsall’s plans for the season by pinching loan midfielder Peter Sweeney today.

The promotion-chasing revival club are also hoping to prise away full back Daniel Fox before January is out.

But the loss of Sweeney is a big enough setback for Saddlers boss Richard Money to deal with for the time being.

The 23-year-old Scot, who has been an important figure in Walsall’s revival after falling out of favour at Stoke where he has not played for the first team since October, worked with Leeds boss Dennis Wise at Millwall.

His deal will go through when he passes a medical but Money accepted the midfielder’s departure as one of the game’s realities.

“The fact is that while I would have liked Peter to stay, he was never our player,” said Money.

“But our record in the loan market since I’ve been here would suggest that we’ll bring somebody in of equal quality.

“We won’t bring somebody in from nowhere. It would be somebody hopefully from a Championship club that can help us.”

And the Saddlers boss remains full of optimism about his team’s progress despite being forced to a replay at Millwall following Saturday’s FA Cup clash.

“I thought it was an absolutely outstanding performance, especially in the second half, from a team that keeps getting younger and keeps getting better and I couldn’t by prouder of my group of players,” he said.

“It made for a very exciting cup tie with a bit of blood and thunder to add to it, and fair play to Millwall who defended for their lives to make sure they came away with at least a replay.

“And I, for one, admire things like that. We did everything but score in the second half.”

I have the utmost faith in Richard Money, finding & coaching cast off players to become wanted by bigger clubs. Let them go we have enough in our locker to cover for their loss, we will still be suucessful regardless of their loss.
But I honestly think we should take no less than a MILLION ………
