Wolves v Cambridge report

Wolves 2 Cambridge United 1

Wolves were indebted to supersub Michael Kightly for an excellent cameo as he helped drag the Molineux men back from the brink of FA Cup humiliation against non-league Cambridge.

The England under-21 man made his first appearance since November and played a big part in sparing Wolves and Mick McCarthy’s blushes as their Conferecnce opponents took them to the wire in a cracking Cup tie.

The Molineux Men started a blood and thunder third round tie brightly as Jay Bothroyd and Stephen Ward missed chances – but were left reeling when referee Kevin Friend gave Cambridge a 41st minute penalty after Neill Collins was harshly judged to have handled Mark Convery’s cross.

Scott Rendell dispatched the penalty past Wayne Hennessey and that ramped up the tension around a nervy Molineux as Wolves toiled against their Conference opponents.

Keogh saw a header cleared off the line and Stephen Ward saw his header turned around the post by the excellent U’s goalkeeper Danny Potter as the Molineux men stared down the barrel of a damaging early exit from the Cup.

Boss McCarthy threw Freddy Eastwood on at half-time but it was the appearance of much-missed winger Kightly on the hour mark that handed Wolves their lifeline.

The winger sparked relief and jubilation around Molineux when he volleyed home smartly from close on 69 minutes after a darting run and cross from the impressive Matt Jarvis.

And he then delivered the free-kick on 88 minutes from which Collins headed home to spare Wolves a perilous replay at Cambridge – and complete his own personal redemption after giving away the first half penalty that had the Molineux fans biting their fingernails.

It booked a place in tomorrow’s Fourth Round draw and gave McCarthy valuable breathing space as Wolves notched their first win in eight games.

Good to win first of all. Any Wolves fan who wants Micks head is wrong. Kightly back and Palace losing for the first time in 14 games spells a Wolves win next week.

Wolves fans, not the best of scorelines, but no matter what it was, you would still criticise!

MM was in a lose lose situation

  5. STH Family Enc said:

To be fair to MM we didn’t deserve to go in half-time0-1. We had broke through a couple of times and were considerably closer to scoring a goal in open play than we have been for weeks. However Neil Collins did it again.WHEN will Mick learn that Collins is just not good enough for this level of football. He is to blame for more goals conceded than he could ever score yet Mick insists on playing him instead of say a slightly quick Rob Edwards. How must Foley and Ward feel playing next to that donkey. No composure on the ball, loses it too easily and plays team-mates into trouble all the time. As for the goals, if Craddock or Ward were asked to make the same runs from corners they probably get a few too but they’re not one of the gaffers pets!

We scraped a win today but it was a win and I think this can help to kickstart our season. Great to see Kightly back from injury and score a crucial equaliser. We have missed him so much but now we can look forward to Crystal Palace and three much needed points next weekend.
Keep the faith and up the Wolves!

  7. adey said:

Ok so we won, what does this prove? We won against a side not even in the league as we know it. If we would have lost I’m sure MM would have had a swift kick up the rear out of here even a draw might have seen the same boot up the same butt.
But we won and now what happens we carry on with the same garbage week in week out?

I thought Morgan was a football man, what the hell is he watching?

PS Get out of here Kightly before its to late you are a star in the making.

If it wasn’t for Kightly we would have been dumped out of the Cup by a non-league club.

No need to say anything more…

Well done Wolves,a superb performance. This will go down as one of the all-time classics at Molineux.Like beating Chelsea 7-1
Arsenal 5-1 and Liverpool 4-0 only just a few short years ago.

we should have a whole team of kightlys and we would win the league. hes proberly even good in goal but wayne hennessey is too good to get rid of.

This was a no win situation game if ever there was one.
Good performance, 2-1 win,the return of kightly, in the hat for the 4th round, job done.

Sorry to dissapoint the fickle boo boys !

  12. quality counts said:

geez, you guys are something else, the “fans” who believe MM is guiding the team to anything near the top of the table must be listening to the game in the pub.

Sorry guys can’t drink five pints and move into lala land. The team has Moxey for that.

We JUST ABOUT BEAT A CONFERENCE TEAM.

Ok, lets look at this another way, if you take where we are in the Championship league annd start to count back down the leagues until you find Cambridge. For the guys in the pub, this is a lot of counting! We are 62 places above them….

Rate the performance correctly… simply diabolical…

45 minutes against non-league opposition and does Eastwood score? No he doesn’t, will the Southbank shut up now? I doubt it!!

    Well done lads,

    UP THE WOLVES!!!!

  15. wulf said:

I thought Kightly was amazing, Eastwood looked a threat and some of Bothroyd’s running and movement was firts class. However Bothroyd has got to be one of the worst finishing strikers since ‘the last piece of the jigsaw’ Frankowski. It was great to win but it was only confewrence opposition and I am really worried about Kightly being snapped up because he is class and a half above the rest of our squad. PLEASE DON’T LEAVE US KIGHTS!!!!

Enough was said in the previous forum, anyone seen News of the World today?

Sammy Lee is being lined up as Wolves’ next manager if Mick McCarthy cannot turn things round at Molineux

Also Charlton are keeping tabs on non-league striker Stuart Fleetwood, who has scored 26 goals for Forest Green this season…This is a player we MUST get to replace Bothroyd and Elliott

  19. DudzieWolf said:

News Of World also claims Aston Villa’s England under-21 international central defender Gary Cahill is wanted on-loan by Wolves. Wolves’ boss Mick McCarthy has had him watched in reserve team action for Villa and has registered an interest

  20. BrightonWolf said:

Same old rubbish from McCarthy - Kites saved his job, for now at least!!It’s only a matter of time before eveyone FINALLY realises what a clueless muppet he is! Lets keep Rossa and offload Micky before anymore damage is done.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A PLAYER THAT WANTS THE BALL, GIVES IT OFF AND MOVES FORWARD TOWARDS THE OPPONENTS GOAL PUTTING THEIR DEFENCE ON THE BACK FOOT MAKES. KITES DID A GOOD JOB IN A SHORT SPACE OF TIME, HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO GET SOMEONE TO PUT THE BALL INTO THE BOX THE WAY HE DID FROM HIS FREE KICK. IN THE FIRST HALF WE HAD CORNERS AND FREE KICKS, BROUGHT THE BIG BOYS UP AND DID NOT GET THE BALL IN THE AIR IN THE BOX, IT SEEMS SO SIMPLE TO TELL THE PLAYERS THEY MUST PLANT IT IN AND AROUND THE SIX YARDS BOX.
CREDIT MUST BE GIVEN FOR A BETTER PERFORMANCE IN THE SECOND HALF, IS MARK DAVIES GOING TO SHOW FOR SOME FORWARD PENETRATION FROM MIDFIELD???????????????????

A WIN IS A GOOD WIN……………………TAKE AS MANY AS WE CAN
    KEEP UP THE FIGHT
JAMIE LANYON HOLIDAY PARK CORNWALL, ALSO IN ATTENDANCE WIFE JAYNE CUBS JAMES AND JENNY, AND GRANDPA MIKE, NEARLY 600 MILES ROUND TRIP BUT A GOOD DAY HAD BY ALL.

ARE YOU HAVING A LAUGH ???
    WHO WRITES THIS GARBAGE ???

  30. Ray said:

went to the match and felt abit sorry for Cambridge as their fans were great , unlike ours who quite clearly haven’t had a great deal to sing about lately. I traveled up from London and took advantage of kids for a quid.
One thing I noticed was the lack of togetherness , what’s the point of dressing room being happy when on the pitch isn’t .It seemed quite clear that no one was going to pass to Steven ward fear i supose and Bothroyd is a joke , a big fellow who goes down too easy, yes he may have a few neat touches but he wants to watch video’s of Bully , Bully didn’t care and got stuck in and got goals !!!.
Kites well it speaks for itself doesn’t it !!.
Freddy was unlucky and should be playing with Keogh .
why keep chopping and changing get some confidence by letting players gel together . Also when warming up before the match freddy and a few others had target practise and scored , why then can’t they relax and do it in the game ?

Here we go! Get ready for all the fair-weather supporters to have a go. “It should have been 3-0 against an opposition like Cambridge”, etc, etc, etc. These are the ‘fans’ that were hailing MM as the new messiah 5 months ago and they’ll be the ones patting him on the back again when we hit a rich vein of form. Makes me sick! Wolves forever, whatever the weather! (Although it is baking hot here in Oz……sorry!)

A win is a win. We are on a roll..

Stop getting agitated. We ain’t going up this year - we are building for the future so any cup run is cool.

So glad Kites is back but lets face it, we need to build a team without him in it because no way will we keep him next year. This goes for Hennesay too. The sooner they are sold for oodles of cash the better. This will give us time to buy players that will be here next year.

As for Mick, he will be here to the end of the season unless things get worse. But he deserves a chance to create an improving team.

Got to say we were in a Cardiff situation on Saturday, if we won 10-0 it still may not have been good enough! Confidence is everything in football and as i heard one bloke say in the south bank on Sat the players seem scared to put a foot wrong at the minute. This is leading to players just doing the simple thing. We must realise as fans we are partly to blame for this for the pressure we put on the team but also they are proffessional footballers and are paid to put up with this pressure.

I think MM has done a great job and would so love to see him as the man to turn it around, im just afraid he isnt going to with his negativity, do people realise we are now joint bottom goalscorers in the division with 22 in 24 games, the same as NORWICH!!! Colchester have nearly scored twice as much as ourselves with 40odd Sheringham upfront!

Kightly is now back, and with a settled team i think we can start climbing again, desperatly need a Centre back and left winger during the window above all else! Think we have the rest of a good squad here, just not being used or no-confidence at the moment!

As for Sammy Lee, no way, maybe as MM number 2 but no way as number 1!

    36. Whats the point of more layers with this Muppet. Who are they gonna replace, his favourites. I’m sure you’ll agree this is unlikely, oh they could be used as bench warmers like Edwards and Freddie

Hop we get a top Prem side in the cup
