Wolves boss wants fast start

4barnsley-v-wolves.jpgWolves boss Mick McCarthy will gear up his side for a rip-roaring start to settle the Molineux nerves against non-League Cambridge in tomorrow’s 2pm kick off FA Cup tie.

McCarthy knows nothing will help his Championship side get over their awkward third round hurdle more than an early goal.

And although they have been in short supply for Wolves lately, the Molineux boss is determined to keep the mood positive before they tackle a Conference outfit who will be backed by 4,000 enthusiastic fans.

“I’m sure Cambridge have looked at us and their manager Jimmy Quinn is an old hand in this business,” says McCarthy. You know exactly what he is going to be telling his side - keep them quiet, let the crowd get restless.

“But we know the one thing we need to do to put that to bed is stick the ball in the back of the net. We’re looking for a spark, that bit of impetus and maybe winning this FA Cup tie can do that for us.”

But the Wolves boss acknowledges Quinn’s outfit present a challenge not to be taken lightly.

McCarthy confirmed that the sorely-missed Michael Kightly is set to take the first tentative steps of his comeback from the substitutes bench.

Quinn confirmed that  Wolves recent form struggle  has added a touch on anxiety to their preparations.

    Too Right!

Very often we can be accused this season of slow, lackluster starts.

No matter if it is just Camebridge, We need to do a number on them tomorrow.

Will be nice to see a good away following, they’ll bring more than Albion do in March.

He is probably looking forward to the visit of the ‘non-league giants’ so that he can re-establish his reputation as a top manager!

Can’t wait to see his new ’speedy wolves team!

He might start with a 1-7-3 formation instead of the 1-8-2

don’t fancy this one bit…please put some of the reserves in or at least on the bench…play jarvis, eastood with keogh and bothroyd as well…davies in the centre

Lets everyone just support the team now. We’ve all had our say, so there is no point in keep repeating them. Some rate MM, some are in between and some don’t rate him. Depite this lets all support our team throughout the whole match and do our part, instead of making things worse for the Wolves team and management. SUPPORT, SUPPORT, SUPPORT.

Is this only relevant to the FA Cup or can we do this in league games also?

Sorry I don’t understand, I haven’t got any coaching badges so I’m not qualified to comment.

Thats right Mick. Set your stall. Lets hope our season can kick off here, and put some goals past this lot.

I have raised my eyebrows at some of your decisions Mick, but im still right behind you!

8 Realistwolf - Agree with the support the team comment BUT even you must admit that the negative stuff out on the pitch is getting borderline a joke?

Hopefully we dont witness any of the garbage that has been served up by MM and the team and they can play with some purpose

BUT if that doesnt happen tommorrow its time that the powers that be (and by that we mean Steve Morgan not the incompetant pie and pint man!) sit up and do something about it!

Altogether Now! Super Super Taff, Super Super Taff, Super Super Taff - Super Taffy Evans!!!

I can see us scapping through and MM using as an excuse for not dropping the underperforming players for another 2 months.

Whats a fast start for the Wolves? Get one man over the half way line within the first 30 minutes of the match.

Should be an evenly matched game between the big team that can’t score and the small team that does. Delighted that Henry and Olifinjana are suspended because that forces a change from what we have been seeing. Hope we see some different faces as a result and we get a brighter perfomance. I hope to see the names of Davies, Gleeson, Jarvis and Eastwood in the line up.

  17. DudzieWolf said:

Yeah, but if we fail to create and convert which we are severley out of practice in doing it will be an faster exit ofr the Muppet

when have we had a fast start and why is this not the case every home game.

the team will always get my support and backing but this season is dire i was not expecting any more than last season, hard work, commitment, organised, and hopefully a top 6 finish, i hoped with jarvis and eastwood we would get a threat down each wing and have eastwood banging in the goals. we have gone downhill fast.

i worry if we don’t get and early goal then cambridge could be another chorley and it could end up like morecambe playing us of the park because our no9 and others can’t score.

if we get beat i feel mick will/should be sacked.

come on the wolves lift the gloom cheer me up bang in the goals and win the game…..please

All we are saying is give us a GOAL! hope it’s A good game for the fans we certainly need an “ATTACK” minded formation with plenty of GOALS!!!

  20. wolves4eva said:

Ha Ha Ha Ha…..Is this real

We need to start at a fast pace

they will come to stifle and let the crowd get on our back

But a goal will stop that!!!!

Shouldn’t that have happened in every other game we have played?

Doesn’t it help when we have attacking midfielders instead of defensive midfielders.

I can see it now - “Yes Mark Davies has been waiting for his chance and he has taken it well, it has done his confidence good and another 2 months in the reserves will bring him back to the player we all thought he could be”

  21. wolves4eva said:

Why is it a 2pm kick off?

  22. Dennis Nicholls said:

If they cannot beat Cambridge then my bet is a loser.
At 1/4 odds they look to good to miss.
Those and Cardiff at 1/5 and Fulham at 1/3 mean for £20 bet on the three will bring…£40

    Double your money lads.

  23. Dr Wolf said:

    After the game….

‘Mick, how do you feel about another poor performance and your teams 0-2 loss to Cambridge?’

‘Oh, I wouldn’t call it a poor performance, I don’t think the score does us justice. I thought everyone worked hard and ‘put a shift in’. I think we were unlucky that one time we got past their eighteen yard line, I mean, who would expect both our strikers to develop nose-bleeds and have to come off? Saying that, Elliot wasn’t happy about being woken up when asked to replace Boothy, maybe the crowd should show a little more consideration and keep the noise down when the subs are kipping. Also, I thought the ball-boys & girls were particularly lively today, some of the best retrieval work I have seen in my career. No, all in all I think this shows we are improving with every game, now we can concentrate on the league and push for automatic promotion. Has anyone seen my camel?’

  24. Keitht said:

I think it is time for MM to ban Eastwood and Bothroyd from the Wolves half of the pitch and if possible, tell them to sit on the opposition’s 18 yard line (avoiding offside of course). That way, we might actually get stikers into the opponent’s penalty area. Also, let wingers or full backs take the corners!

  25. Happy_baggie said:

A fast start ?? So you could be a goal down in the first 10 minutes then…

Seriously though , this has got to be an easy game - 3 or 4 nil no problem. can’t see you doing another Morcambe - 2 in one season would be the end of you !

  26. Greg Cooper said:

Thing is, some Wolves fans will grumble whatever the outcome. If we give them a 5-0 hiding some folk will say ‘Well it’s only Cambridge’, and if we beat them 1-0 it’ll be ‘Why can’t we beat a team in the Conference by more than 1 goal?’. If we lose, well, then I think MM’s number may be up… let’s get behind the lads tomorrow, give them all the support we can, sing and shout for 90 minutes and get to the 4th round. Perhaps with George and KH suspended it will give McCarthy the opportunity to play someone like Davies or Gleeson in the middle of the park - I expect that he may pitch Darren Potter back into the fray, but as long as he plays him alongside Gibson then I don’t really mind. Throw Jarvis in to see what he can do, with Freddy and Keogh upfront, get a few goals and get the confidence back up a bit.

  27. Wolfmanmac said:

As the famous boxing MC proclaims “Let’s get ready to grumble!!!” Cambridge come tomorrow with absolutely nothing to lose. I wouldn’t, as Greg Cooper suggests, start tinkering with the team selection to see what various players will “do” in this situation. 1-0 will suffice, we have to negotiate this difficult fixture. I expect Cambridge to play in a manner that will get them out of their respective division, with aggression. We don’t battle in a toe to toe way so we will have to play our way around them, something we haven’t acheived for many games. This will be tricky.

  28. Breretonwolf said:

    26. Keogh is out with that chest infection thing, he will probably play Freddie and if he scores 10 goals Muppet will say “I’m pleased for the lad, he’s put a shift in in traing and its paid off. But lets not forget it is only Cambridge”

Your probably better off having a dabble on Cambridge at 10/1, it’ll pay for your season ticket for next season. This way you will at least be putting the money back into the club

get a few goals ? MM has no idea how to coach a team beyond the half way line. Yes I am a long suffering season ticket holder who put up with the crap from Moxey when we went into the premier league (i.e. Dave Jones and co thought the squad was good enough)and the absolute rubbish we were served up by that plonker (supported by Moxey) Hoddle. MM does not have a clue, and neither does O`Connor if he is the first team coach.Get rid and move forward. Incey, Gary Johnson from Bristol (McIndoe clearly understood that MM had no idea, other than shout at players to run, run, run, run).

  39. scottwolf1 said:

i will be very surprised to see eastwood start. Lets face it we should get a hatful against them (that’s 2 goals by our recent standards). It is an ideal opportunity to boost the strikers reputations so it will be Elliott who starts so that MM can turn round and say ‘told you Elliott is the best striker we have’

This is an ideal opportunity to give players confidence a boost - watch us blow it with a negative line up (potter ‘the crab’ is odds on to start)

Eastwood will not play. I have a feeling that MM wants to off load him and on the off chance that we create a chance and he scores it he will be cup tied making him a very unattractive buy because he wouldn’t be available to anyone still in the cup.
