Troy Deeney is willing to continue playing out of position to earn himself a start against Millwall tomorrow.

The 19-year-old striker has been operating on the right side of midfield recently but, with Tommy Mooney unlikely to be fit for the FA Cup third round clash through injury, Deeney may receive the call to play in his favoured position.

“I’d like to play up front because that’s my natural position,” he said.

“But when the manager asks me to play right midfield I’ll play right midfield rather than sit on the bench.

“I can do a job there. I can cross a ball, so I just keep going and I’ll see what happens in the near future.”

Deeney scored the winner against the south London side in the 2-1 victory at the New Den back in September and will be hoping that Money opts to partner him with Michael Ricketts up front tomorrow.

Definitely out are Anthony Gerrard, whose one-match ban for accumulating five bookings comes into force tomorrow and Peter Sweeney, whose parent club Stoke City will not allow the player to be cup-tied.

Ian Roper appears the man most likely to deputise for Gerrard, having been a regular on the substitutes bench recently, although he hasn’t featured in a first-team match since September.

Sweeney played for tomorrow’s opponents in the 2004 FA Cup Final defeat to Manchester United, but misses out as his loan expires this month and Stoke want Sweeney available for future cup matches, should they overcome Newcastle United in their third round clash.

Mooney is almost certain to miss the match, having failed to recover from a hamstring strain sufficiently to be risked, but the manager isn’t too concerned about the skipper’s absence.

“There’s no point worrying about it,” Money said. “Tommy Mooney didn’t play on Saturday, Peter Sweeney didn’t play on Saturday and we still got through.

“What we have here at the minute is a group of young players that are desperate to play, hungry to play and want to play.

Millwall manager Kenny Jackett added to the Lions squad yesterday by signing forward Adrian Forbes from Blackpool in time for him to make his debut tomorrow.

The match kicks off at 2pm on police advice and, should a replay be necessary, it has been pencilled in for Tuesday, January 14 at 7.45pm at the New Den.

Money yesterday confirmed that Junior Mawete has left the club for Belgium after his four month contract ended on December 31.

The Angolan-born former Benfica striker was awarded a deal with the Saddlers in the summer after a trial period with the club, but has failed to impress sufficiently.

Mawete struggled to make an impact at the Banks’s Stadium and did not make a first team appearance, despite having played at UEFA Cup and Portuguese top flight level for Benfica.

“He’s signed for a Belgian club until the end of the season,” Money said.
