Time for a change of scenery?

winter-05-morda.JPGDid you wake up on New Year’s Day and shudder at the thought of another working year?

With more and more of us dissatisfied with our jobs, pay, working hours and conditions, it’s no surprise so many are considering living and working abroad.

Whether it’s a 12-month contract or for a complete lifestyle change, spending time working in a different country can be a hugely rich and rewarding experience.

But it isn’t just professionals who are in demand - there are an increasing number of positions in retail, manufacturing, driving, construction and agriculture, although there are also positions available in education, health care and other skilled areas.

Choosing a new country to live in can be tricky - after all, the world is your oyster - but if you need a little inspiration, the town of Morden in Manitoba, Canada, currently has a wealth of job opportunities.

Morden is a one-hour drive from the city of Winnipeg, close to the United States border.

fall-05-morda.JPGIts expats are attracted to the picturesque town’s affordable housing, relaxed lifestyle, high standard of education and diverse recreational opportunities.

“The local economy here is driven by agriculture and manufacturing,” explains Cheryl Digby, Morden’s Community Development Officer.

“But its proximity to the United States border also makes it an ideal location for new businesses to set up.

“The unemployment rate here is extremely low, the success rate is high and a lot of companies here are now looking to immigrants to help fill job vacancies.

“We also have a local firm here that can assist with the immigration process and applying for a work visa, although the employers can often help with this process too.”

One of the main highlights of living and working in Morden is the accessible housing market - the average price for family home is between $100,000 and $165,000 (Canadian dollars) - a snip compared to steep UK house prices - and in recent years the town’s real estate market has seen an average annual value increase of around 5%.

Left Old Blighty years ago. Enjoyed New Year’s Day basking in the sun on the patio with a G and T in sunny Saudi Arabia. Gordon Brown is not having a single penny of mine.
