Mick McCarthy believes Wolves can still make the top two this season – but admits they will need a rapid improvement to start chasing down an automatic promotion slot.
The Molineux men were some eight points behind second-placed Watford before a ball was kicked today but McCarthy believes the Championship is so wide open that his team can mount a comeback.
He has pointed to Crystal Palace’s recent revival as evidence that Wolves can make inroads into the automatic promotion race.
“In this league, top two is certainly still attainable,” he said.
“We need to get a foothold and another start to get us up the league though. But I think we have seen that the league is so unpredicatable – anyone can get a run of results.
“If you look at Crystal Palace in terms of where they are now and where they were – it was a great turnaround for them.”
McCarthy hopes that a revival is around the corner – and he believes he saw the first green shoots of recovery in the hard-fought draw against Norwich on Saturday.
He believes patience is the order of the day from the Molineux public after the team endured their “first bad run” of the McCarthy era. And he reckons the team need to be shown a bit of understanding if they are to prosper.
“We all hope the performance at Norwich will be a turning point and a catalyst,” he said.
“Let’s hope we’ve gone as low as we are going to in terms of performance and league position. All of us need to think now about going forward.
“We need to remember that 16 months ago when I first arrived, I came into a situation where people were thinking we were favourites for relegation. But we finished last season in fifth place.
“This is the first bad spell we’ve had and the players need a bit of understanding - including from me.Confidence can easily take a knock. That’s life. But it was a good all-round performance at Norwich - the best we’ve played for a good while - so that should have done us good.”

You have to give this guy 10 out of 10 for blind optimism. Either that or I would like to sample what he was drinking on new years eve.
To get promoted we are going to have to win games. To win more games we are going to need to score goals.
If only his style of football was a fraction as positive as the spin he puts on his interviews we would be sailing in to the premier league with no problems.
If Mick believes this he needs to transfer that believe to his players and get them doing the business on the park.
We do not need to keep talking a good game we need urgent action out there on the field starting with this afternoon.
Lets see the intent and desire lets get some action.

A top two is still achievable but only if MM is replaced. His work here is done, he steadied a sinking ship last year and thats all he`s capable of, thanks for that mick and look forward to seeing you round the grounds with your headphones on reporting for sky.

I gotta say I am sick to bloody death as all the wolves bashing that goes on here. Bagies fan, no offence but bugger off and discuss your own team. You guys are having a damn good season so go and enjoy it. As for you wolves fan out there, just remember what MM inherited when he came to Molineux and what we are doing now. Yes, we are are having a bad patch but given the state we were in when MM took over I know which I would pick. Do you wanna end up as another Derby and have a good championship team that gets promoted and comes straight back down or build a solid team and club with the potential for getting to the premiership and staying there. MM is doing what Fergie and Wender have had to do….rebuild and look at where it has got them. Keep the faith, get off his back and be a supporter the club can be proud of.
