Wolves blog: Patience running out

mccarthy1.jpgWhen Mick McCarthy said that from the four festive games he thought that all 12 points available could be achieved, most of us thought he was being just a tad optimistic, writes Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd.

And so it is, one point from the first two games in that sequence and the dire football continues.

I know I’m no football manager, just an ordinary fan with an opinion.

And I’ve backed Mick all season, waiting for the form of the last term to return, but it just isn’t happening.

Perhaps teams who were taken by surprise by the youthful Wolves team that confronted them last season are now better prepared.

All the flowing football and the invention has been replaced by predominately nervy and unimaginative play.

I feel like I’m just repeating what I’ve been saying for weeks now.

McCarthy is basically playing a mixture of around 16 different players every game, and you can see that ideas and confidence is sadly lacking.

Yes, it will be great when January comes and he can maybe breathe life into the team with a couple of new acquisitions.

But every team in the land will be fighting for the same players and I think the answer is right under Mick’s nose.

We have to start giving some of the younger players who had success last season a chance to shine again: Little, Davies, Gobern, Gleeson and although not so young, Rosa.

It’s frustrating that every week Wolves fans across the land are screaming for these players to be given a chance, perhaps even on the bench, to show what they can do.

We need better service from midfield and with Kites out, Mick must turn to one of the above to spice things up.

The inconsistent Olofinjana and Henry are basically playing the same role in midfield with neither being able to create much for whomever Mick has plucked from the raffle to play up front for any particular game.

Success is now everything in football and time is not a commodity that most managers have and Mick is probably under no elusions of what will happen if the results continue in the same way.

Twoddle’s era was all about square pegs in round holes; constantly playing good players out of position and unfortunately McCarthy is falling into the same trap.

Time and time again he is playing centre forwards on the left wing and central defenders in full back positions.

We bring in Gibson to play in the middle and stick the poor kid on the right.

I think Wolves fans’ patience is starting to waiver.

It’s amazing that we are still in contention for a top six place and that’s only possible because apart from Albion and Watford, nobody has really shown any consistency.

Let’s see if we can get anything against Norwich and the Blades.

I haven’t completely given up hope of Mick pulling it out the bag, but the McCarthy fan club is losing members fast.

Happy New Year to you all and lets hope for a better Old Gold 2008!

Spot on Nathan. It’s a bit like steering an oil tanker, and when the thing goes off course, it takes an awful lot more time and effort to steer the thing back in the right direction, or to bring the thing to a stop, then restart again. Unfortunately time is something which the Wolves have had under MM, and the direction still appears to be wrong. I’m sure there must be rumblings at Board level right now. Not sure how this will end up, but confidence everywhere seems very low right now, and this needs addressing asap.

Just looked at my predictions for your xmas games…

    3 against leicester
    3 against Nowich
    1 against hull
    1 against Shff Utd

I said that anything less than 8 points and you would be a) adrift of the pack and b) looking for a new manager

Having lost at Hull & drawn with leicester I think the next 2 games are “must win” if MM is to be there in jan, but I can’t see you getting ANY points from these games now (sorry).

So, I think the question is, WHO will be buying your players in january ??

Anyway, i wish you a Happy New Year !!

I lost confidence with him in the summer when he failed to strengthen the areas we knew needed attention.
Ar first I was in a small minority as others saw the results coming in as a compensation fir the performances. Now neither are coming I think the vast majority of fans have seen the light and realise Mick can take us no further.

Now we just need him to go and get someone in who can take us forward.

im not a mm fan a some want him out and some want us to stick with him. unfortunatly i dont like his arrogance and he is a big hypocrite ie square pegs round holes, after his comments on goals on sunday. The style of play and passion is rubbish, boring and non existent. people say dont keep changing managers stick with them for a while. What is a fair ammount of time? because i think and football is about opinions that any manager with alot of money and time could get any team promoted. MM has lost confidence with the players i think they have lost confidence with him and the fans are quickly losing confidence with him. If we did stick with him and morgan backed him heavily in jan and the players he brought in were better than what we have at the momment which cant be too hard and we still didnt get promoted what would the MM fans be saying then stick with him it may only take another 19years.

What’s remarkable about this latest slum in form is that comment on it is so consistent from fans. Previously we’ve seen opinion deeply divided under Hoddle, Jones, Lee etc.

Without repeating all the points made about players and positions, it seems to me that the only one who can’t seem to see the wood for the trees is Merlin Mick.

Steve Morgan is a no fool, he won’t be at all happy. Mick could be looking at his last chance at Norwich.

8 - lucky for you guys there are some good managers looking for work - but i have always had a feeling that sammy lee is Morgan’s choice.

Whoever you get in will have to hit the ground running - both with buying new players AND getting your current squad sorted - its a tough job for whoever you get.

(always assuming i am right about MM getting the bullet - you may win your next 2 then it will be all smiles again…)

  12. razor said:

Nathan’s right. I also feel like I’m repeating the same old things - so how come we all see it, but MM can’t? He thought that everything in the garden was rosy when we were winning 1-0, 1-0, 1-0, but anyone who knows a little about the game could see that the results were papering over the rather obvious cracks. Our problem lies with the midfield - we have to get rid of Seyi (roll on January) and replace him with someone creative. I still think Henry has a role to play, providing we can get some creative midfielders around him (Kites, Davies, Rosa etc)., then when we are really creating chances (not the pretend ones MM refers to), we might see how good our strikers really are. Oh and should we be looking at Walsall’s left-back Dan Fox??

I’m afraid MM’s time is up!

I never wanted him appointed in the first place - he was a manager appointed on a track record of getting the Mackems promoted but lacking the guile and pulling power to sign Premiership quality players to keep them up. So, even though he did a cracking job last season (…and he did!!), why would we be ultimately any better off than Sunderland were under MM’s leadership?

Consequently, in my view MM was only ever going to be a short term appointment because eventually (and I did think it might be in the Premiership given last season) results would catch up with him.

The reality is that this may need to happen sooner rather than later and now in my view. The fact is we are nothing more than a middle of the road Championship club (with a Premiership fan base)in a run of results that sees us hurtling towards mid table mediocity at best. Unfortunatley, I cannot contemplate any realistic scenario with Wolves as an established Premiership club and MM as manager….it just ain’t gonna happen and I think we all know it. If, by some miracle, MM did get us promoted via the play offs (which he won’t) this season, how many of us really want to “enjoy” another visit to the Premiership like our last one or enduring a season like the Rams are this year. I do accept that Murdoch’s millions do provide some counter argument, but do we really want to see our beloved club beaten at a canter by Chelsea, Villa, Arsenal or any other club in the top 2/3rds of the Premiership.

Consequently, as the New Year approaches I believe that it is time for a new direction at the Mol. If we can get him, I believe that we should be seeking the Guv’nor’s forgiveness and hoping that he would contemplate re-joining us. I genuinely believe that he will prove to be a top class manager at the highest level and may ultimately be destined to be one of the few English managers (of those currently managing) to manage 1 of the big 4 clubs. So, if he can take us some part of the way with him on his journey to the top, then let’s get on board and enjoy the ride.

I appreciate that there will be fellow fans who will disagree with exiting MM stage left when we still have a chance (according to the league table anyway)of making the play offs, but I really believe that Mr Ince will undoubtedly prove to be the better long term prospect of getting us back to where we think we belong!!

I agree with your comments Nathan and I do feel that it is a change of playing style or a change of manager that is now needed. Mick says he wants to get back to where we were 5 games ago. But in that ‘good’ spell we scored 4 goals in 7 games. The reason we got points was because we got clean sheets. What I want is a Wolves team that entertains and looks for goals. Not a team that makes a priority of stopping the other team scoring. Typically he says that the way out of this bad run is hard work. Actually I think the way out is to take off the shackles and play with more flair.
I now find that I have fallen out of love with the good times under McCarthy as well as the current bad times cause even when we are getting points we are hardly good to watch. So if Morgan is prepared to spend cash in January I would like it to be put in the hands of someone that will make this club one that plays the type of football that makes me proud to support them and makes me enjoy the games.

I have been saying this for at least 2-3 months, MM is a 1 trick pony i repeat “A ONE TRICK PONY” He is tactically inept, he got lucky last year, where teams didnt know how to play against the liktes of Kites, Keough etc but this season it seems like that most teams work us out before we step out onto the pitch. MM reluctance to drop his favourites is wearing thin. One for defeat and I think he has to be sacked. Moxey and Morgan need to travel to Paul Ince’s cheshire mansion and make him an offer he will find it hard to refuse. Wolves can be like Birmingham a few seasons ago, they sacked francis, got in Bruce and we were in similar position and they got promoted via the playoffs where Bruce got in some key players in January. With Ince on board we can do it!

    McCARTHY OUT!

I think we shouldn’t rush into getting a new manager, lets wait until the summer.

I have read lots of comments about Ince being to inexperienced but we have had lots of very experienced managers at this club and nearly all of them have failed, perhaps it is time to break the mould?

Morgan would be best served by giving Moxey the bullet before anything else!

The problem is there for all to see. We have two central defenders who can’t play football and have no finesse whatsoever - the result mostly long inaccurate boots upfield - or if they do play into the midfield are totally predictable and often put them in more trouble - and certainly are never looking to help the midfield out by making themselves available - a real pair of footballing rabbits who look scared stiff of having to play the ball.

Add to that the central midfield pair are not natural playmakers.

Then we’ve frequently been playing Bothroyd and Elliot upfront - Laughable -Bothroyd a big centre forward who never gets in the penalty area - I think just fancies himself as a playmaker taking freekicks and corners - Elliot - works superbly hard but no skill, shot or heading ability to worry any half decent defender.

Whatever, happened to the freeflowing football of last season - when we created so many chances. We panicked because they didn’t put a large enough proportion away. The forward line last year was excellent just needed to add an option of a poacher.

The midfield created lots for them - main person being Darren Potter - not great defensively but what a superb passer of the ball and always looking at how to open defenses up.

The biggest problem we had was the defense was dreadfully slow - no change there.

Come on Mick you did superbly last year with lads who were keen and really looked as though they enjoyed playing together and helping each other out.

I’m sure Mick can find the answers but please let’s play with pace and the players who will give everything for each other

I´ve been searching the internet for any hints of which football philosophy Mick McCarthy is a follower of. Nothing. What are his ideas for the play. Which tactics does he prefer etc. Nothing!

What I did find was disappointed supporters from Ireland and Sunderland. They were in pain because their strikers did not score and that players were played out of position.

Should he stay or should he go? Well, it all depends on who will come instead. I hope Morgan don´t sack him without a plan of a successor. But I think MM:s job for Wolves is ending soon.

Times up Mick - thanks for last season but over £4 million spend badly in the summer has left us in this position where the squad is not good enough to cope with a couple of injuries and mount a serious promotion challenge. I’ve said all season the balance of the team looked wrong - players playing out of position, Mick’s “favorites” playing every week and a dreadful long ball style (mainly down to the lack of creativity in the midfield). The only surprising thing about what’s happening know is that it didn’t happen sooner in the season.

Some of Moxey’s transfer dealings have been astute…Camara being a prime example….but where managers are concerned, he seems to get starry-eyed and won’t do anything about it until the writing’s been on the wall for months!

I worry that he thinks it will reflect on him and would make his own position tenuous if yet another managerial flop which he appointed is sacked!

    Nathan

I am not trying to be provocative or pick or fight, I would genuinely like to understand what it is that MM has done and why he is rated so highly for last seasons achievements?

I think that the best part of last season was our own ‘homegrown’ players and the brilliant form of Matt Murray. Without them last season would have been about the same as this season.

As soon as MM brought in his own players things started to go wrong. If it wasn’t for Kightly then MM’s players would be looking very very average.

Please explain why people (including you) believe MM is one of the best managers in years, This assessment truly mystifies me?

That first half performance against Leicester was clueless, embarassing & the ‘team’ (I use the word advisedly) had no idea what they were doing. People talk about MM’s style of play etc. well I’d like to see some semblance of style - certainly none there. Improvement after the break was immediate when Freddie came on. At least he was willing to break into a sweat & run at the opposition. A moment of inspiration from Bothroyd, good running from Keogh & we’d scored & could, crazy as it seems, have won a game we should have lost by 2 or 3. Olofinjana said the Hull game second half was the worst of the lot well all I can say is it must have been dire to beat the Leicester first half. As for Seyi, is he ever going to break into a run for us rather than trotting aimlessly around? We’ve all seen great box to box midfield players, Olofinjana seems to spend most of his time watching the game go by from the centre circle. Get him sold to a Premiership struggler & bring in someone perpared to die for the cause or at least break sweat! As for the manager, I’d give him funds to spend in January, offload a few wasters & if we don’t at least make the Playoffs -cheerio!

Here’s a bit of analysis from the first half of the season. Twelve away games and eight goals. Six of those came at Sheffield wednesday and Cardiff, leaving a poultry two goals in the other TEN away games. Yes, that’s two goals in 15 HOURS of football (1 goal every 450 minjutes). Luckily for me I saw four of them at Sheffield wednesday and Sheffield Utd, although none at QPR. Patience is wearing thin now, as demonstrated when I arrived five minutes late for the Leicester game to find a rather miserable looking Gentleman already on his way OUT of the stadium citing that the football was not very good at all and we were already 1.0 down( or words to that effect!)

Yes we haven’t had the best start to this season, and yes our football has been pretty dire and he does play his favorites, BUT has anyone noticed that our dip in form has started since Terry Conner has been promoted to assistant Manager, this guy has been around to long and although he is popular with the players lets face it he is pretty awful as a first team coach and I believe that if Mick was given the tatical support of someone who is far better (a Brian Kidd for example) we would not be in the posistion we are now. why has not a certain Mr Bull been asked for his thoughts as why we cannot score. when we have a coaching staff of ex defenders all they are going to look at is the defense. The comments on George I completely agree with he has given up lets get the middle sorted how about Rosa,Gibson,Davies.Jarvis but most of all lets get behind the team

The amazing fact is we are still only 9 points behind Sandwell which in this division means nothing. ALL IS NOT LOST!

Starting from tomorrow from 3 oclock until 10 to 5 we support the team whole heartedly, we where doing that last season who remembers what happened after the 6-0 defeat by Southampton could you imagine that happening this season.

He was never a good manager, he didn’t have to become a bad manager overnight. He already was one. The man holds the record for the team finishing with the lowest points total in the Premiers history (Soon to be stolen by Derby methinks) but still he has no real ideas how to play winning football and on a lesser note he doesn’t know how to play attractive football either. Attractive football I can grudgingly accept us not playing, winning football I cannot. He needs to go, because we will stagnate as a club the longer he is here. If he stays here we will be in this division next season, if he takes us up by some miracle, we will take Derbys unenviable record.

I am sorry but reading 42 comment has made me reply. WHAT ARE THESE BLOGS FOR. THEY ARE FOR ALL WOLVES SUPPORTERS TO GIVE AN OPINION. That is why he has been able to say what he wants. I am not happy with MM. To me this is the worst squad we have had for many a year. But if he goes the poor s?d that takes over will have half a team, the rest would struggle to make the first and second divisions. This policy is a downward spiral, you have to have quality mixed with young hungry players.

    Tamworth Wolf - We have gone backwards since last season. Its not just one or two things McCarthy can be questioned on, its nearly everything he is doing. Shall we start ;

    1) He has spent nearly 5 million since the start of the season, and we have a worse team than we did last season when he spent virtually nothing.
    2) Our defence was bad last season and is now even worse, he new about this before even one ball was kicked but chose to do very little about it.
    3) He got rid of Mcindoe for peanuts and hasnt replaced him with a better player.
    4) He publicly ridicules players like eastwood week in week out, yet other players like Elliott and Stephen Ward cant seem to do any wrong in his eyes.
    5) His policy of playing the youth players has completely disintigrated and he has sent them out on loan instead.
    6) He clearly has his blue eyed boys who play every week regardless of their performance. Eg. Ward, Collins, Elliott, Ward, Breen etc..
    7) What the hell does Mark Davis and Dennis Rosa have to do to get in the team, he keeps saying that Rosa doesnt fit into his style of play ! Errh have we got a style ?
    8) Our goal scoring record has been woeful for the last two years he keeps buying strikers but maybe he should be looking at our poor midfield (lack of pace, creativity and skill and cant pass) Kights being the only exception of coarse.
    9) I come back to his buying of players why the hell is he obsessed with trying to buy half of a poor Sunderland & Ireland squad.
    10) He is constantly changing the squad week by week and playing players out of position. (Stephen Ward is clearly not a winger and never will be)
    11) Every match, he says we played well for at least one half but not the other. What the hell is going on ?
    12) That brings me back onto his buys.. What his is requisite of a quality player ? (Someone who runs and runs and runs by the look of it) He bought Eastwood who is not that type of player then seems amazed that he doesnt play the way he wants him to. This is bad management on his part for not looking at the player properly before buying. Then there’s Potter (no skill no ability, we have better in the reserves) Collins & Darren Ward (Slow and very poor defenders) Jarvis (I will reserve judgement on as he has hardly kicked a ball) Elliott (too small, light weight and injury prone), Eastwood (Has potential but wont fit into McCarthy style of play, I would not be suprised to see leave in January) Foley (looks a reasonable player and has good potential, doesnt get injured easily either) Is there anyone else ??? Oh yes Keogh - (I dont want to be to harsh on Keogh as he is clearly a 100% comitted and creates a lot for other strikers a lot like Mutchy used too. But clearly he needs to start scoring more goals) Finally Kights, (Superb player and a bargain buy the only quality midfielder we currently have) but will be sold by the summer.
Finally as I mentioned at the beginning, and on previous threads the quality of football being played is extremely poor to say the least. I like many other people pay out a lot of money for season tickets and dont think its too much to ask to see some players on the pitch who can pass a ball to each other, create chances and score goals from time to time. I am just glad I dont go to the away matches anymore 9 hours of football without a single goal. Yet Mick still thinks we are playing well, It says it all really !

Tamworth Wolf ….. open your eyes mate.

Wolves have been having a BAD RUN since the early 80’s.

We pay WELL EARNED money to watch wolves, so WE have a right to moan.

MM needs to but quality players that will give 110% each game!

He needs to buy a 1st class GoalKeeper that unfortunately will result in Wayne Hennessey being dropped to reserve goalkeeper.

Then he needs to but mid fielders who can deliver and supply the forwards with plenty of ball…..

then WE have to keep our fingers crossed that the forwards can score……..each way bet me thinks.

Don’t want to upset you all but i can see Kightly going in January as he will see that Wolves have no chance of premiership football next season.

Apparantly we played better at norwich but only scored one goal.

Sandwell town have scored more in the Last two matches than we have managed in the last thirteen.

Tells a story, MM get on your bike.

    “CHRISTMAS CRACKERS” SAYS IT ALL.

We are crackers to follow Wolves.

Take a look at teams (any league) and the top 4-5 teams have top goal
    scorers listed. Wolves don’t. Hmmmmm.

It doesn’t take a lot for MM to
figure this out,or maybe he can’t/
    doesn’t want to….GOALS…Mick.

    Same problem at Sunderland too.
Wake up Mick, your Xmas is almost
    over……we need goals….fast.

Not the ones in our Christmas Crackers.

so TY happy baggie .. happy new year to you too ;] up the wolves !!!

What on earth is going on down at Wolves. We can’t score so lets keep Mr Eastwood on the bench or give him one game at a time so what chance has he got. In my eyes you don’t score 16 goals for Southend who were getting beaten most weeks and not be a good forward, but i forgot apparently you have to put in a good SHIFT(unless your the lazy Boothroyd). Unless you have good service from the middle of the park you will always struggle to score as 23 goals in 24 games proves, so lets get rid of Olofingana (laughing pyjamas) and replace him with Mark Davies to give us some attacking quality. Its also time for MM to do us all a favour and put his SHIFT in and SHIFT over and let Paul Ince become GUV’NOR.

Well said Hexxen agree with all you have to say. Little arguement with any of your observations. Sadly the only person who seems not to agree or is simply to stubborn to accept your points is our manager!

jeez you would think we were bottom of the league the way some of you go on! point one everyone was calling for freddie till they reslised he was playin crap.. ditto gleason davies and little???do you seriously think that if they were playin so well they woudnt get a shout. point 2 bfore you all make yopur minds up wait till we have fielded something like a fuull strength team something weve yet to do this season

We really should look at bringing in a young Manager who his hungry for success and back him with an experienced no. 2 and give him adequate funds to build a good squad. The managers that we seem to bring in have usually been succesful somewhere else and have been paid off handsomely after losing their way and they have all lost that hungry edge and I include MM,Glenn Hoddle and Graham Taylor.Perhaps we should be talking to Paul Ince before somebody else does.Currently the team is going backwards and this is unacceptable.

Personally, I’d like to see Henry back at right back. I know he doesn’t like it there - but he was excellent at around this stage last season. Switch Foley to left back and play Craddock and Edwards/Collins/Breen at centre half.

Then a fairly novel idea - lets not play two defensive midfielders in the side (particularly when Kites is injured). Try Gibson in the holding role when George is at the ANC. A combination of Kites/Jarvis/Davies/Rosa/Daniel Jones to fill the other three midfield slots (with two wide men) and finally, Keogh up front with Bothroyd or Eastwood.

As an aside, just noticed the Stephen Ward stats this season. 21 starts, 4 sub appearances. Number of goals? 1 less than Jarvis in 3 starts (6 sub appearances).

Well the transfer window is now open and Steve Morgan is left with a huge dilema. Would you let Muppet Mick loose with your millions? He has totally destroyed Eastwoods confidence and looks like hes trying to do the same with Jarvis. He does not appear to have a clue tactically. You can see this style of football on any park on a Sunday morning.
What on earth was Moxey thinking about by giving him improved terms following that Korean stunt?
Sack MM now and get Ince in before its to late. Another couple of weeks and we’ll be closer to the bottom than the top!!

I don,t want to upset anybody but going on recent performances of both teams I am predicting a major upset at the golden palace on saturday possibly another Chorley result on the way.
