More crash misery for drivers

2516257chaos-6-tt-20.jpgMotorists faced a second day of chaos on the M6 today after a lorry overturned near the scene of a crash which wreaked havoc just 28 hours earlier.

The accident in the early hours of today forced rush hour traffic to a halt in Staffordshire for the second day in a row.

The M6 was closed northbound between Junction 12 at Gailey and Junction 13, Stafford South, after a lorry overturned at 2.20am.

It follows an accident on the same stretch of road yesterday when two lorries collided just before 6am, closing the motorway between Junction’s 12 and 13 and forcing motorway traffic onto local roads.

The Highways Agency said they were not aware of any particular problem on that stretch which might explain two accidents in such quick succession.

Scenes this morning saw vehicles again held up on the A5 and the A449 and tailbacks on the motorway.

It was estimated the carriageway would be completely open by midday.

The Highways Agency said the lorry had struck a footbridge parapet.

The accident came at the start of the busiest travel weekend of the festive period. The RAC predicts a peak at 3pm today, when an estimated 18 million look set to take to the roads.

Thousands of fantastic holidays to choose from!

I am a HGV driver, and while I sympathise with car drivers who see us as the devil of the highways, there is no other alternative to having lorries on our roads. If the fuel duty to hauliers was cut, we would be able to compete with the ever growing number of foreign lorries on our roads. The reason there is so many of these is because they can undercut British hauliers because they are running on cheap fuel bought overseas. These lorries pay nothing at all into the UK coffers, where as the British hauliers are effectively subsidising theselorries. Back to lorry crashes however, we say the same when muppet car drivers crash and cause us to be late for deliveries, you drive too fast, give us little room to make turns etc etc. And remember next time you want to play chicken with an artic, were probably running somewhere between 30-44 tons in weight, your car weighs about 1-1.5 tons…who’s gonna win!!

Its not the matter of winning its a matter of being SAFE on the road, and if you lorry drivers were more careful then there would not be so many accidents involving lorries.

Richard…i always drive safe as i’m sure you do….but there are always idiots who take risks, truckers and car drivers! Don’t always blame truckers, we have tight deadlines to meet, and supermarket shelves to stock!!
