If Sky Sports are to be believed, apart from the supposed ‘big four’ clubs, ‘nothing else matters,’ writes Villa blogger Gregg Williams.
Well I for one beg to differ. I couldn’t have been less interested in ‘Grand Slam Sunday’ which was hyped beyond all recognition this weekend.
There was more entertainment to be had in the Wigan vs Blackburn game than the last ten encounters between Liverpool and Manchester United that i’ve endured.
It really is a sad state of affairs when the first hour of Soccer Saturday is devoted to games which don’t even kick off until the next day, despite there being a full program of league football on Saturday afternoon.
Maybe I’m on my own here but i’d love to see Everton or Man City break into that top four this season, assuming we can’t achieve it ourselves. The national media’s obsession with Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea is to the detriment of our national game and quite frankly bores me to tears.
It must be even more frustrating for smaller clubs like Birmingham City, struggling to sell out games while the national media tell their fans that they shouldn’t be bothered about their clubs anyway because they aren’t in the ‘Grand Slam League.’
As for Villa, Saturday’s game with Sunderland gave us an important point after two straight defeats at home. Poor old Roy Keane, cruelly robbed of three points at the end by the referee apparently.
Am I the only person that thinks it was a blatant foul by the Sunderland player? He clearly raised an arm and leant on Scott Carson as he headed the ball. Sure, it wasn’t the most convincing goalkeeping but it was still an unfair challenge and fair play to Steve Bennett for giving the decision in favour of the away side.
Roy Keane should be happy to have come out of the game with exactly what his side deserved, a point.

I completely agree with your comments, sky (& G14 ) are not helping football they are wrecking the whole ethosis of the game where local people support their local club & I would be glad for any team to break the so called big 4 up.
maybe the rest of us should start a movement to but pressure on sky,FA, Premier Lge etc, after all the rest off football are the majority.

Did anyone else think it slightly strange that the top 4 were drawn to play each other all on the same day - thus allowing Sky to have their “Grand slam sunday” ??
Surely fixtures should be made on a random basis and not to boost the profits of the TV company - there is enough moving of fixtures and changing of times without actually drawing up the season in advance to suit the telly.
What next - Man Utd only getting home games after a European fixture ?? The prodcers team always being at home over xmas ??
perish the thought…
