Wolves blog: Split opinions

stoke-indexz.jpgWolves’ fans at the moment seem to be divided in their opinion of Mick McCarthy, writes Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd.

Some, like me, think that he is the best thing to have happened to Wolves since the Bully era, whereas others seem to feel he lacks the necessary clout to take the club forward.

I can understand the frustrations of the fans, especially when watching games recently against Colchester, Preston and Burnley that has been like pulling teeth.

We all have our opinion on team selections and transfer targets.

I thought that Freddy should have started in the last game against Burnley and was bemused when MM chose to take off Gibson, who on the day when some players were appalling, actually put in a decent shift.

But I think Mick is a little more astute than some give him credit for.

Freddy was next to useless when he came off the bench and Gibson might have taken a knock and needed to be subbed, who knows.

Yes MM has dropped clangers in the past, like Craddock going to Stoke, but he quickly admitted his mistake and quickly brought Jody back.

And some may argue that his good signings are evenly balanced out by his bad.

But last season wasn’t a fluke.

We came good after the January transfer window and who knows we could well do it again.

Reading some of the negativity on here, you would think that we were languishing somewhere in the pit of the relegation zone.

Instead we find ourselves in a healthy top six position, with a good young team that for some reason just are not quite on the money.

The sad reality with football these days is that unless Mick takes Wolves up this season, you wonder whether he will get another bite of the cherry.

When Dave Jones took us up, he did so mainly with heavy investment into a team of experienced players who were quickly found out in the Premiership.

If Mick gets us there, then we have some good young talent to build a team around.

I’m not saying for a second that this current crop of players could cope in the Premiership; players like Ronaldo and Arteta would make our centre backs cry for their mothers.

All I’m saying is that Mick deserves our support until he really messes it up.

But I’ll continue in my optimistic vain which some of you may like to argue is foolhardy.

Good luck to the lads at Loftus Road tomorrow against a lacklustre QPR team, let’s hope we can grab all 3 points and talk more about the positives next week.

Nathan I do hope you are right and we win Saturday and win well so the picture looks a lot better going into the xmas period. My main concern is that if we do drop out of the top 6 we will find it very difficult to get back in with the teams just below us all picking up points. MM team selections of late has baffled us all at times. I just hope he knows what he is doing and has a good idea who he wants in January and all us Wolves fans can have smiles on our faces again instead of the doom and gloom that seems to be going round a the minute.

My main beefs are that MM seems at times, too obstinate to admit team selections have not always been correct and that he has his favourites that appear, in his eyes,to do no wrong. Fans have been crying out since September for the likes of Rosa to get in the squad when he was scoring so regularly in the reserves and for Davies who is the required attacking midfielder. It was clear early on, that we needed a powerful centre forward of the Bully mould, to convert the chances created by Keough and Kightley yet we are no nearer getting such a player. They are out there in the non league sides, diamonds waiting to be discovered and bought for a pittance (just like the two mentioned above). Send Bully out to find his successor ASAP!

Well said Nathan. Let’s get behind Mick and the team. Now is not the time for wholesale changes which will just disrupt the team even more. If Mick does stuff up come the end of the season then that will be the time to act. I share your doubts about this team being able to survive in the Premier - that’s where Mr Morgan’s money will come in useful - using it to build a team that will survive in the Premier.

The wolves have been ‘found out’ in this division, never mind going up.

There is very little unity or balance to the present squad, unless things improve we will be lucky to scrape sixth place. It’s right that MM is under pressure, given enough time and money I will take wolves into the Prem.

We are following the same pattern as last season, a couple of new faces in the Jan sales, keep us in the playoffs then lose out yet again. There are no bargains at this time of year only the rubbish everyone wants to offload and save on the wage bill.

Dr Wolf, its nonsense posted lke yours that put MM under pressure, when he took over no REAL wolves fans could of dreamed that last season we would be challanging for promotion & that we would be expected to gain promotion this season, I do however agree that this current team lacks balance & thus that is where the recent poor performances have come from but this is just a blip & I am very confident that we will bounce back.

As for this squad not being ready for the premiership, if it were we would already be there. Sure we have some players would have the ability to play there & some have not, but would you want MM to bring in players on Prem money to play in the Championship???

Surely not, now that would be bad business.

Back the team & the manager & we will all attain the comon goal, Promotion.

Long term prospects for the club are not good if MM stays @ the helm. Look at his top flight record with Sunderland! Money cannot be used as an excuse for ending with the lowest total of points in a premiership season….

Nathan Lloyd - Bah Humbug!!! MM has produced a squad this season that has averaged 1 goal per game!!! Is that a good sign? Yes we had a better season after the Jan last season but that was because MM didnt have anytime to make any signings due to the Hoddle fiasco - Whats the reason this time???

A “lacklustre” QPR you say - you mean the same team that beat an in-form Burnley 2-0 away from home???

And with regards to your comments about Craddock and MM being “big enough” to realise his mistakes - Dont you REALLY mean that the fans got on his back at the games and he then recalled Craddock from Stoke???

You must be a Happy Clapper by all accounts - Support the Manager you shout - You probably did the same for Glen Hoddle in his tenure

Try opening your eyes and looking closely to notice that MM is trying to get Championship quality players to play like Brazil - playing most of them out of position and expecting strikers to one minute to be ball winning midfield players and the next World class finishers!!!

We have NO balance in the side and without the likes of Kites, Hennessey and Foley we would really struggle to survive in this Division never mind get promoted!!!

Our strikers are suffocating and struggling as they are expected to do things that other strikers in this division dont - you cant be a ball winning midfield player and score a couple of goals at the same time - a word to the wise - The sort of players that do this are playing for Barcelona, Real Madrid etc etc not Sheff Utd WBA or even Wolves / or ANY team in this division!!!

Yes we are 6th But for how long? Playing with an average 1 goal per game will NOT get us promotion UNLESS something changes drastically!!!

S Ward left wing N Collins Left Back - No balance = players struggling = pressure on the defence

NB* ANY decent manager knows that a 1 goal per game average spells trouble over the course of a season - Without a regular supply of crosses and passes the strikers struggle and the ball comes back at us far too quickly - Who is that down to - the strikers???

Whilst we wish for the very best for our team - We are NOT stupid enough to ignore blindly the harsh realities of stats and facts - 1 goal per game average IF kept at this rate will spell mid table at best - Last season we had Kites and McIndoe on the wings Now we have Kites and —- S Ward??? Not his fault we know - BUT why persist with him - Is D Jones not a better option???

Mulgrew - Whats wrong with him at left back? Good enough for Scotland U21 but not for Championship Wolves???

Mark Davies - D Rosa - Top scorere for the reserves and experienced attacking midfield player???

Lets just ignore the stats and facts and keep on Happy Clapping as you say “Until MM REALLY messes it up!!!”

NB* Take a closer look the dirty water is nearly Knee deep in muck!!!

Mick must be given a chance and his critics should be more grown up during this sad phase. However Mick could help a lot by explaining some of his decisions. If Gibson was injured then say so. If he felt he made the wrong selection then he must say so and defend his choices if the team plays badly.

Mick is an astute manager and I believe he will take us to new heights eventually but he should explain more to the supporters. We were here before him and we will be here after him. We should be shown more consideration.

One thing is certain. Eastwood is someone who must start the game. Whenever he is brought on as sub he seems to flounder.

He only has to open his mouth and he messes up. Telling publically players they are not good enough or are not wanted or they are number 2 choice etc.

What will it take for you to wake up and realise he’s not the man for the job.

    Tony and his side kick.

At the end of the day MM deserves your support, even if ourely what he did last season.

As for this season, a team can’t hide for the whole season and ultimately our position will reflect how well we have done (the difference between a league and cup). We are currently 6th and I would strongly argue that’s acceptable. We may move up or doown at various points during the season and our support should be unwavering regardless of this, the only time true judgement can be made is at the end of the season, not at different points during. Get behind the team all the way to the end of the season and maybe then will be discussing MM time.

We are building for a future and if you’d have said when MM took over that in 18 months time we would be 6th in the Championship, anyone with any knowledge, really, would have readily agreed that that would be an achievement. MM may have caused himself problems by doing so well last season, thus causing the age old problem of some idiot fans (many on here) being short sighted and having unrealistic expectations. For me MM is doing a good job and whilst I would love promotion this season, the real expectation (providing there is backing from the board) should be for MM to take us up next season.

B & T (#9) have made some hard hitting comments but in the main they are right! MM may well be a good manager but so many things coming from him have confused many of us. Words have been said without any thought, players dropped for no apparent reason, players playing out of position when others are available etc, etc. We have a decent squad of players but some are just totally ignored, so why are they at the club, to sweep up after the game? Our tactics have been wrong for most of the season with the emphasis being on defence in detriment to attack, hence we are one of the lowest scorers in the division! MM’s favourites in the main are ok but there are say 3-4 who should not be playing and 3-4 reserves (when fit) who should! MM stated earlier this season that “Rosa does not fit in with the 1st team way of playing”, for GOD’s sake man he scores goals, he is given a wandering role and that makes him difficult to pick up. As a result opposing players are constantly out of position following him around which surely would give our strikers more freedom and midfield more space to pass the ball? Mulgrew & Davies are others whose faces do not seem to fit, I ask, why? Tomorrow is a critical fixture, lose and we could drop down the table 3 places if results do not go our way and the lack of confidence that 3 successive defeats could bring to the team may well decide our season? MM needs to bring in some new blood but not the Iversen’s or the over-30 Howard’s type mentioned this week and then hopefully we can return to the kind of football we played last season but firstly MM needs to change his ideas/tactics or yet another season in the CCC could well beckon but there again, we are are getting used to that by now, aren’t we?!

The posts so far have aptly demonstrated the title of the blog.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and to defend it when the individual feels they need to.
My main concern (opinion) is that whatever the opinion, the players deserve our support, because in the end, they are the ones that play the 90 minutes and have the ability to change things.
I also believe that MM has done enough so far to expect our support and patience - even though I don’t necessarily agree with a number of his decisions.
For holding these beliefs, I resent being referred to as a Happy Clappy from people who would describe themselves as fellow Wolves fans.I also resent the implication that anyone who doesn’t agree with you moaners and whingers must be blind - not true, most supporters see what is going on, but some choose to support the team in a positive manner.
Lets face it, even when things were looking good for us, posters like the ‘Krankies’ and wolveswolves were still moaning.
To all the other posters, I would say don’t bother trying to reason with them, because they won’t change.
Some were born moaning, some have moaning thrust upon them while others achieve the greatest level of moaning.

BUT WEARE NOT THERE FOR THAT REASON ARE WE??? Open your eyes and see the murky season ahead so long as mighty muppett carries on with his pig head attitude we could after one month or two not be 6th top BUT 6th bottom. I am nervous about the QPR game because 1 goal a game as everybody is mentioning IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH….

We are not divided, as we all support the club and want the best for Wolves.

We just differ in our opinion’s, some support MM and some do not. I for one do not see us progressing much further under McCarthy’s reign. All teams playing against us have learn’t how we play from last season and MM decision to not ensure we had adequate cover in all position’s (ie, Letting McIndoe go), has had a negative effect on this young squad.

It does not help when he keeps saying Breeny is nearly ready to come back as he and collins are cart horses of the highest order yet MM still thinks Breen is his best defender (LOL).

The defence has been miserly but don’t forget we have 10 players playing in our half, Sorry make that 11 when you see the likes of Keogh, Eastwood and Co picking the ball up from our area, so they can put the shift in for MM.

So will we all be happy when we are battling for the final playoff place because our average point scores indicates 72 points by the end of the season, which in some seasons would not get 6th place.

I just hope i get proven wrong an we get that spark which gels the team together and we get to the promised land, but then i would fear for the following season.

I just happen to think that MM has taken us as far as he can. If he proves my opinion to be in correct then so be it. I will be as chuffed as everybody else who support’s this great club of ours.

My fear is though if we get promoted we have a manager who will get little if no money for a concerted campaign in the premiership and we will be in the transfer market 2 months later than everyone else (remember when we went up the last time). No money then and the same bean counter is in place now.

Also MM has a great entry on his CV as being the manager of a team that scored the lowest points total ever in the premiership.

whilst i am at it maybe i am one of the ones who expected more of the same from last season only to have my hopes dashed.

I lost interest in your blog when you started making excuses for MM, so I didnt read it all.

No matter it wont change any of the facts,

Fact is we haven’t seen more than one good game of football at Molineux this season.

Fact is Wolves are playing poorly, have been for weeks, the defeat by Burnley could have happened in any of the four games before that day.

Fact is MM bought seven strikers in 18 months count em Craig Davies, Jemal Johnson, Andy Keogh, Stephen Ward, Jay Cant be Bothered, Freddie Eastwood and whatsis name oh yes Elliot. So would you send him to the shops again?

Fact is MM sent Craddock packing - then had no choice but to take him back and lo-and-behold always likled him anyway, I believe in father xmas more than I believ this twaddle.

Fact is MM said Jarvis was reday to tear defences apart- then didnt paly him for four matches - so it aint happened cos he aint played enough

Fact is Gibson is a box to box midfielder MM plays him on the wing

Fact is MM got rid of McCindoe and FAILED to get a replacement

Fact is Wolves are weak on the left and MM did nothing about it

Fact is MM said there’s no 30million for players (E&S 12th DEC 07)

Fact is MM said he hasn’t asked about a January transfer budget (E&S 12th DEC 07)

Fact is MMs long ball punt cuts out the midfiled and the ball comes straight back at us every two minutes.

Fact is MM aint good enough

fact is I couldnt give two hoots if Im labelled a moaner- I want Wokves in the premiership - and if JH hadnt bottled thats where we would be right now. So I will keep on calling it as I see it

Final fact - the Championship is a poor division thats clouding the judgment of many armchair pundits, dont be satisfied with the play offs its just 6th position with another name. Theres no pride in 6th.

On your last post though, why do you assume that MM will not have any money for the premiership?
The ‘bean counter’ as you call him has a different boss this time around, so I would be hopeful that things will be different - at least I am willing to wait and see, and not jump onto the negative bandwagon (The wheels must be buckling by now)

Don’t keep blaming the manager though. He has to work with what he’s got and has to appear happy doing it!

Clearly, we are not going to see any major inroads into the transfer market, given Moxey’s ‘profit’ brief, though I must say, our low risk strategy is safe and boring!

The facts are our expectation levels have risen from last year when a mid-table finished would have done. This season we are quire rightly expected to make play-offs comfortably at least. I’ve watched football in this Divison for the past 18 years. Some seasons it’s more difficult to get out than others but the winning formular is simple >>> A solid spine in your team, with a good goal keeper, solid central defender & terrier like midfielder(s) and attackers who can score. The season we went up we had all that & the bonus was we had wingers who could supply the service. This season is the poorest division I have ever seen, there are no outstanding teams and it’s up for grabs to whoever id up for the fight & wants it more.

Another fact, we have not played well all season, the fact is Kightly flashes of brilliance has carried us & last season with McIndoe we had the perfect balance, this time round Ward (as much as he tries) is unable to do the same wingers role & Jarvis has not had a look in.

Get promotion the solution is simple, put a rocket up Olifinjana to get the nasty side of him & that extra 10%; bring back Lewis Gobern & possibly Elliot Bennet from loan to fly down the wings & give Rosa a chance to make those darting runs from midfield.

Offcourse you can also dip into the xfer market to supplement the above. MM has the best opportunity of al lrecent Wolves managers to make an instant impression. - For me it’s he’s to blow!

Yes - the opening paragraph to you is a tad patronising BUT now you know how it feels personally ;-)

For your information; When Wolves nearly went out of business - we were there when the volunteers went around with their buckets collecting money and we contributed like many of what you term “the faithfull”

We were also there when Wolves won the Play Off finals to get to the “promised land” and also there to witness our boys get whooped by the likes of Charlton at home - Chelsea blah blah

And FACT is we cheered our lads whatever - come what may!!!

The difference was that in the Prem - we were outclassed by many teams most of the time BUT we are playing in the fizzy pop Championship and look almost as clueless at times as we did in the Prem???

MM came in LAST season and helped us AGREED BUT - It is now a new season and we are going BACKWARDS

Strikers in this league do NOT normally get asked to play as ball winning midfield players - and all this “work rate” comments from your guru MM seems to be blinding you BECAUSE most strikers that play in the fizzy pop league are NOT good enough to play like Brazillian players and are normally focussed on doing a particular job - in this instant SCORING GOALS!!!

Without going over it again - without a regular supply it aint going to happen!
But dont let facts and stats get in the way of your “faith” in MM

Love MM; think he’s a top bloke! You’re waiting for the `but` and here it is. He does make mistakes; he is not infallible and if you make mistakes in football there are `fans` lined up to let you know it. I’ve managed boys’ teams and men’s clubs for 40+years and still play. I think I’ve learnt a fair amount over the years. A good team must have complete balance; A strong balanced backbone and wide players who can go past players on the outside or inside and deliver ball to strikers who can head and shoot with either foot. Wolves have problems at present in going down the flanks and delivering good ball, a lost art since the demise of wingers. Jarvis, if he is fit has to play regularly. One striker needs to be tall, Bothroyd. One central midfielder needs to be able to support attacks. It is not rocket science. Football is easier than some coaches wish to make it. They spend their time `worrying` about the opposition whereas they should be working on their own strengths.Balance in width and depth are needed and you buy and coach players to achieve that. There is no excuse for teams not to have balance but look how long England struggled without a left sided player when Ashley Cole could have played there with his eyes shut as we did have other left backs at the time. When Keogh is back and if Jarvis is playing we shall look a much better side. Then we can address the two defensive positions that are and will continue to cause us problems against good players. Trouble is we get away with it against journeyman players as our defenders are good pros. The Wolves will go up this year unless something really drastic occurs. Attitude through Motivation is worth 60% of a performance and that is where Mick needs to earn his corn. As Wenger and his ilk do, he should publicly support everyone of his players and deliver`right bollockings` in private. Negative comments do not usually motivate people but encouragement and praise build confidence and pride. It’s common sense. Come on Wolves. The premiership needs teams with a fan base as enthusiastic as ours.

Wolves is more than just a topic of conversation and I would be interested in hearing from anybody who was listening to Thursday nights BBC WM debate where it was suggested that McCarthy had fallen out with Morgan. Morgan stating that McCarthy has all but one or two bought a load of crap players and from now on he will be buying the players and McCarthy will need to manage them! Can anyone else elaborate?

I still think the core of this team is good enough to do some real damage to the majority of this division, however we choose to play our football and that is where the problem lies for most fans.
Last season we played open, aggresive football which allowed our strikers time to get into postions aswell as peeling off to collect through balls along the floor.
This year we are playing with 8 men in defence, at any 1 time, and only allow 1 striker to really stay forward, no wander the poor buggers can’t score they’re exhausted by the time they’ve finished filling in the gaps in midfield.
Keogh should start with Freddie up front, Jarvis on left with Kightly on right, all of them looking to stay forward as much as possible.
George and Gibson in centre breaking play up and spreading balls out wide/to strikers.
Then unless we’re really in trouble Gray,Foley,Craddock and D Ward all stay back and defend without falling back into the box.
Please MM only play with so many people defending away from home otherwise whats the point in asking our loyal legions to support a team that gives them nothing to cheer.
    Does anybody disagree with team/tactics???

Most of the comments you make are patronising to people with different opinions to yourself.
I refer to references about ‘happy clappy’ etc
It is clear that you only read bits of posts that you want to.
The main thrust of my post was to show and encourage support for the players and manager.
I also said that most supporters can see what is going on, but prefer to stay positive - that doesn’t mean we we are blind, it just means we are trying to be supportive.
And once again you make sweeping assumptions, this time about me and my household - how dare you.You are one of the most opinionated writers on these pages - you look that up in the dictionary.
These pages for the last few weeks have been full of negative comments - initially helped by the Baggies supporters, but I notice that they are quieter at the moment - perhaps because they are wetting themselves laughing at the fact that they don’t need to post anymore - We are doing a great job bringing our club down for them.

    Think about it.
P.S its ver y cloudy this morning - Sack MM - iy must be his fault

40 Dudzie Wolf - We heard Tony Butler say that Steve Morgan is now employing his own scouts to look at players before he even considers making an offer for them If true - this must spell the beggining of the end?

We do not advocate a “sack the manager” at all - BUT - we cant carry on with these so-called tactics and being so negative that our strikers are too nervous to go out and enjoy playing anymore for fear of being lambasted in the media by their own manager - TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL

With regards to ALL of the Happy Clappers (If you feel you qualify for the title - Well if the cap fits - Wear it!!!) how would ANY of you feel if you were the bosses pet one minute and made to feel inadequate the next??? Truthfully, you would be considering your options with regards to your career!!!

In our view, a good manager keeps footballing matters in-house and away from the media - this non sense about MM wearing his heart on his sleeve does not go anywhere near justifying his reasons for making his strikers or any players he has brought into Wolves a topic for discussion!!!

Our lack of strentgh in depth is obvious for everyone to see - so why are players out on loan and good midfield players ala Rosa and Davies not even given a game - even as Sub???

If only making gestures from the sidelines were enough to guarantee promotion and a decent performance - just wishfull thinking - 1 goal per game average is very dodgy ground - if you look closely and notice that we are only capable of scoring ONE usually - as we are struggling to score

Collectively we are a Championship team - we are not capable of playing like the Kaka’s and Brazillian players who can drop deep and use the ball at will!

Even James Beattie wouldnt be able to score in our current set up - as he would need regular service - yes - strikers would also add to this by creating some chances BUT not be expected to run themselves ragged and then have nothing left by just after half time!!!

The point is this - Freddie Eastwood would thrive in other teams as he would get service and could go about doing what he is paid for - scoring goals
Andy Cole needed about 3 to 4 chances to score 1 - How many chances are provided each game - answer NOT ENOUGH - WHY? because we are made to play far too deep and dont have the right players in the right positions!!!

The current state of our tactics is wierd to the extreme - last season we had two wingers creating chances galore and we were saying “If only we had a natural goal scorer” - this season we are saying - Why has FE been dropped? Why is S Ward playing left wing? Why are our strikers expected to create their own chances etc etc etc

If only we could get ALL eleven of our players to collectively play together, do their respective jobs - defend create and shoot - maybe , just maybe we could muster more than 1 goal per game average and start on a real genuine RUN of convincing wins!!!

NB* MM - Freddie Eastwood is a very good striker - that’s why he was bought wasnt it? He’s not a midfield ball winner and he’s not an international Brazillian - try giving him and one other regular games and service and you may just see a difference - While you’re at it - dont forget that Mulgrew has a left foot - is young and can play at left back - not to mention Rosa and Davies who you’ve left to rot in the reserves and are busting a gut to show what they can do!

Jarvis was in the team of Div 1 last season - a very good player who is over looked in favour of a struggling S Ward??? WHY???

MM You gave into the fans with Craddock and the fans were right!!! You brought in D Ward who is not even good enough to get into an average Palace side and for How much???

We heavily rely on Kites for creative inspiration and we have nothing on the left side OR anywhere else on the park - WHY???

An 8 man defence and a 1 goal per game average is nothing short of a joke MM Sort it out before Steve Morgan does it for you!!!

UP THE WOLVES!!! KEEP THE FAITH!!! C’MON YOU WOLVES!!! C’MON ME BABBBIIIIEEEEES!!!

MM said it doesnt stand for Merlin the Magician - it does stand for Mid-table Mediocrity. My problem with MM is that he states the obvious e.g “we were awful” and then does nothing to change it or doesn’t tel us how he’s going to change it. Against Burnley Ward was ineffective, Elliott was nt much better, Collins too slow, Gray past his best, Olofinjana disappointing(a point nade by MM in the press) BUT 1 week later and all the above start the next game. Nothing like rewarding failure(whatever next - give an England manager 1.5 million for failing to reach a euro champ? ….wait a minute…doh!!)

“you cant be a ball winning midfield player and score a couple of goals at the same time - a word to the wise - The sort of players that do this are playing for Barcelona, Real Madrid etc etc not Sheff Utd WBA or even Wolves / or ANY team in this division!!!”

But today I give you Zoltan Gera, a ball winning midfield player who plays for WBA and who does score a couple of goals at the same… time…
