A driver was killed and a man waiting for a bus seriously injured following two separate crashes on main roads in Wolverhampton.
The fatal crash, involving a Bentley and a Rover, happened at the junction of the city’s Stafford Street and Cannock Road.
The second smash saw a 21-year-old, who was waiting at a bus stop on Penn Road, thrown 50 feet after a Mercedes ploughed into the shelter, destroying it.
The blue Mercedes, being driven by a man in his 40s, hurtled into the bus stop near Waitrose, at 10.50am today.
Both the driver and pedestrian are being treated at Wolverhampton’s New Cross Hospital for head injuries. They are said to be in serious but stable conditions.
The busy Penn Road was sealed off, causing long tailbacks.
West Midlands ambulance service spokeswoman Claudine Weekes said both men were treated at the scene by staff from two ambulances and the shelter was completely demolished.
The fatal crash happened last night at around 11.30pm close to the Untouchables hardware shop and Cannock Road was closed until 3am. The unidentified man, who was driving a Rover 620, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witness Adam Hartley, aged 18, was coming out of the Emerald Club, in Cannock Road, shortly after the accident happened.
The former St Edmund’s Catholic School pupil, of Merridale Road, said: “I saw the paramedics put a green sheet over the Rover.
“It looked like there had been a head-on smash. There weren’t any skid patterns so it must have happened at speed.
“There must have been seven police cars, two ambulances and two fire engines there.”
Crew commander David Horton, from Fallings Park fire station, said: “There was nothing anyone could do for the man in the Rover.”
The Bentley driver escaped with minor injuries and was taken to New Cross Hospital.
West Midlands Police spokeswoman Catherine Preece said the dead man was yet to be identified by police and officers were urgently trying to trace his family.
The victim, who is believed to be in his 20s or 30s and possibly from the Lithuanian community, was driving a red Rover 620 car, registration number N293 VHP.
Anyone with information on the crashes can call the road policing unit at Bilston Street police station on 0845 113 5000.

Surely the car is registered to the DVLA so police should be able to track whi the driver is, or was it not taxed, MOT’d and insured? I maight sound harsh if the bloke has lost his life but he could quite easily of killed someone himself.
Why are you speculating Anon? Get the facts first before you start off with “he wasnt taxed insured etc” - What next blaming him for being eastern european…..roll on the racist comments…..not a thought he may be innocent and have a wife and kids somewhere. WAIT UNTIL YOU HEAR THE FACTS - WHEN YOU DO THEN MAKE A VALID COMMENT!
Well it may be a racist comment or it may not but at the end of the day it is a valid one as most of them do not have insurance or even a license but yet they get away with it, if the police were to do a check i bet ony 10% of them would be genuine , stereo types are formed from prior experiences not fresh air!
