Chasetown FA Cup hero Danny Smith has revealed he can’t wait to face Cardiff – so he can meet his all-time football idol Robbie Fowler.
Smith’s last minute winner clinched a third round tie at home to Fowler’s Bluebirds next month with a goal of which the former Liverpool goal machine would have been proud.
“I’ve got miniature statues of Robbie Fowler in my bedroom, he’s my all-time hero,” said the 20-year-old from Great Wyrley.
“I’m a Liverpool fan and so to be playing on the same pitch as ‘God’ – what the Kop call him – is something dreams are made out of. If I see him I’ll just want to hug him on the pitch!
“I had a season ticket at Anfield about five years ago when he was still there but when he left, I didn’t really want to keep it.
“I’ve just followed him – I’ve got his book at home, so I might bring that down and get him to sign it!
“I hope he has a look at my goal – I’d love to speak to him about it, so he can validate for me against some of his own.
“I could talk him through it, telling him to get across the front post! You never know, I could call him Robbie and hopefully he could call me ‘God’!”
Smith has revealed how he came close to betting on himself to score the winner.
“I was walking with Chris Slater yesterday and we went into a betting shop,” he said. “I was looking at the odds and I actually had a betting slip with Chasetown to win and me to score.
“I took it to the till but the man said ‘you can’t bet on yourself’, but they didn’t have any odds written up for Chasetown players to score.
“Chris said to me ‘get your head right, get off the bench and you’ll score’.” That planted the seed with me.”
Slater said: “I was so pleased for Danny. He’s been with the club for as long as me but hasn’t always featured that much.
“We were walking down the road yesterday and he said to me ‘I’d love to score just to have the headlines’.”
