Walsall blog: Genuine promise

walsall.jpgNine away games without defeat, Walsall FC’s best run since … err, the ten away games we went unbeaten last season, but still a fantastic achievement by the lads, writes Walsall blogger Mark Jones.

Especially given the start we had to the season and the fact that we’ve jumped up a level.

As a warm up for two games this week that could define our season, Saturday’s trip to Crewe was, yet again, a display full of genuine promise.

If you didn’t go to Crusty Road, then a run down of how we played against our old foes could have come from just about any match in the last six weeks.

Another clean sheet for Clayton, whose biggest problem for most of the afternoon was keeping himself warm.

The Scouse Mean Machine defending like their lives depended on it, aided and abetted by Rhys Weston - easily the most improved player of the season.

Mark Bradley bossing the midfield with another all action display, Wracky using all of his experience with a disciplined and intelligent performance.

Big Tommy, being basically Big Tommy, and making life uncomfortable for the opposition for the full 90 minutes.

Glimpses of quality from Michael Ricketts and a brief moment of magic from Ish coming off the bench.

Eddy’s best game for weeks and the Sweeney beginning to show us what he can do (complete with the accompanying theme tune from the travelling fans) were an added bonus.

The big debate in the away end, easily the fullest and noisiest part of the ground, at 4.45pm on Saturday was what to actually make of the 0-0 draw.

It was enjoyable to outplay our opponents with some fine passing and movement of our own (much as I dislike Crewe they do try and play the game the right way) in a performance that had everything but goals.

Most people were happy with another pleasing display from a Saddlers team that seems to be improving by the game, and I think a lot of us would have taken a point had it been offered at 3pm, but you do get the feeling we could have and should have buried them.

I get the feeling that if we carry on developing at the rate we are at the moment, then anything less in a similar fixture in twelve month’s time and we won’t be so forgiving.

Perhaps the most philosophical view of the day came from a bloke in the gents.

‘A point’s a point’ he mused from his place at the urinal. Difficult to argue with that one.
