Walsall can go up: Gerrard

gerrard1.jpgAnthony Gerrard today insisted Walsall are genuine League One promotion contenders this season.

The in-form Saddlers defender feels the impressive midweek victory against high-flying Nottingham Forest proved they have the strength and firepower to compete with the division’s heavyweights.

And, while he feels there are still plenty of stern tests ahead for Richard Money’s men, his words are an indication of the confidence flowing in the dressing room at the Banks’s Stadium.

The Saddlers travel to Crewe tomorrow unbeaten in eight and on the brink of a top six place – a remarkable achievement considering the poor start to the campaign. But Gerrard is adamant they can be contenders this season.

“Our aim for this season is the top six, no doubt,” he said.

“I think everyone involved with the football club can see that we’ve competed and beat a top two side in the week so why can’t we be promoted?

“Forest are going to be up there – there is no doubt about that – so by beating them we have proved that we are a top side in this division on our day.”
