The multi-million pound transformation of 17 acres of derelict wasteland alongside a Walsall canal into a thriving leisure, retail and business complex, creating hundreds of jobs, will officially begin next spring.
Land preparation work on the rundown site, off Wolverhampton Street, opposite Crown Wharf, has already started but regeneration bosses say the first visible signs of change will become apparent in a few months’ time.
The Waterfront North development by Urban Splash will be carried out in phases and is expected to take a few years to complete.
First-phase work will include two oval-shaped 11-floor buildings, with offices on the ground floors and 154 apartments on the second level. Other aspects include a four-storey office building on stilts and a “living” green car park covered in plants.
Later phases will see a number of leisure facilities built on the site. Final details have not been drawn up but it is expected to include a bar, hotel and restaurant.
Dr Peter Cromar, chief executive of Walsall Regeneration Company, said: “The major building work will start next spring.”
The development will tie in with the Waterfront South development further along the canal. In total the two projects will cost £180 million and create 900 jobs.

How many times do we get told it will start only for nothing to happen - is it a pipe dream??
It will get half built, then get burnt down & then get someone else to replan the lot to a completely different design.
You couldn’t make it up
Do not worry about it, if Advantage Westmidlands has anything to do with it, you can be safe in the knowledge that it will not see the light of day, and Walsall council, well they will scream that that the budget has been pulled as there was no takers to match fund the project.
