A Wolverhampton mum has turned her passion for travel into a rewarding business - by taking holidaymakers to the Sahara Desert in Morocco.
Rachael Nixon has founded Sahara Wisdom with the help of Business Link, Chambers of Commerce and UK Trade and Investment to introduce West Midlanders to the serenity and peace she discovered over a year ago when visiting the vast Sahara for the first time.
Her vision was to create a sustainable and environmentally-friendly form of tourism that provides a quality experience and gives back something to the local Berber people.
Sahara Wisdom is, where possible, committed to using local people and products at fair prices, with a proportion of any profits being donated to the people of the Draa Valley, which she describes as the real guardians of the Sahara experience.
And Sarah has also come up with an interesting take on the “all inclusive” deal, creating tours that for one price offer kit for for the full desert experience, food, water and accomodation in a range of quality hotels, from oasis-shrouded riads to Berber bivouacs.
With two very successful tours already in the bag - the oldest person on the last one was 66 and the youngest just nine weeks old - Sahara Wisdom promises to be an exciting new enterprise for Rachael, who set up the company while on maternity leave.
Working with business partners in Morocco she is planning to open offices in Wolverhampton, and in a little town perched on the edge of the northern Sahara called Zagora, the staging post for the tours.
Sahara Wisdom is offering to give free talks to school groups and organisations interested in experiencing the a flavour of exotic Morocco.
“The stark beauty of this part of the world and the paradoxical existence of the nomadic cultures of the Draa Valley offers a perfect setting for self reflection, goal setting and thinking out of the box - in short for developing the type of skills that both individuals and UK plc value,” added Rachael.
