A subway near Molineux was sealed off today after a suspected sex assault.

Police taped off the subway and staircases around Ring Road St Peter’s and the Wanderer pub.

It was uncertain whether the cordon would be removed in time for this afternoon’s match between Wolves and Preston North End.

Police have so far not revealed any information about the incident other than that it was a sexual assault and happened some time before 7am today.

Blue tape blocked access to both footpaths along either side of the dual carriageway between the University of Wolverhampton’s School of Art and Design and the Molineux Hotel. The tape was set up across the entrance to St Peter’s Square next to the main university building.

Burger seller John Humphreys from Bloxwich said he did not know whether he would be able to trade to fans today if the cordon was not lifted.

The 57-year-old said: “I’ve been doing this for seven years on this spot and never seen any trouble.”

Wolves bosses expected the area to be open again in time for the 3pm kick off.

Spectators for the Preston North End match trying to reach the Jack Harris and Steve Bull stands were expected to be allowed extra time to cope with diversions.
