Tony Mowbray today backed Alex McCleish to be a hit at Birmingham - and said he is relishing ‘part two’ of McCleish’s rivalry with Villa boss Martin O’Neill.
Albion manager Mowbray locked horns with McCleish and O’Neill during his time in charge of Hibernian in the Scottish Premier League.
And he cannot wait to see the men renew their Old Firm rivalry across the second city divide.
“It will be interesting to see, with Martin across Birmingham on the other side of the city, having been part of the Scottish game at the same time,” said Mowbray, who was in Scotland with McCleish led Rangers against O’Neill’s Celtic.”Martin and Alex went head-to-head four times a season when they were up there in the craziness of the media world that surrounds Old Firm games. And now here they are again in the same city competing against each other.”
And Mowbray is certain that McCleish, who was confirmed yesterday as Steve Bruce’s successor at St Andrew’s, will not be fazed by his first taste of management south of the border.
Mowbray said: “I would suggest that Alex McCleish is a very experienced guy who has worked in the Champions League with one of the world’s biggest clubs in Glasgow Rangers.”
