Disaster for England on Wednesday, and things could hardly have gone worse from a Villa perspective, writes Villa blogger Gregg Williams.
Poor Scott Carson, so solid for us, dropped a monumental clanger, and it’s impossible to say how it will affect him.
The debate now will be all about who should be the next England boss, and we all know who the bookies favourite is for the job!
Many Villa fans will now be pushing the panic button, fearing the worst as the F.A. trawl through their phone book for Martin O’Neill’s mobile number.
I fully expect them to make an approach, and Randy will no doubt allow Martin to speak to the F.A, but as I’ve said before, I don’t think he’ll take the job.
The only managers foolish enough to take it on will be out of work foreigners, such as Fabio Capello or Jurgen Klinsmann, of strong enough character and experience to believe they can do the job, and younger English bosses motivated by national pride.
My main concern is that weeks of speculation will damage our team’s performances.
I can only hope that Martin publicly rules himself out of the job, and tells the players he’s going nowhere.
He can have a big say in the future of our national team, but it should be through nurturing our young players into dynamic, confident professionals who can rise to any challenge.
By the next world cup we can only hope that it is Barry, Young, Carson and Agbonlahor representing our country, and not Martin O’Neill.
Villa fans, are you worried, what do you think? Tell us below

Mmmm…………………
O’Neil is the most overated manager in Britain, so why would England want him ?
Oh hang on, i’ve answered my own question………..
Martin O’Neill owes Villa fans a straight answer if nothing else. Not his normal political avoidance of questions but a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
G and B
I couldn’t agree more, there are mangers of a much higher caliber out there. I have always believed Martin O’neil to be massivley overrated. And if he wasn’t good enough for it last year what had chamged. Fabio Cappela or Lippi are far better qualified. Or jose if we could get him but i doubt it
m.o.n would make a great england manager, but he is building a new side at villa and i think he will stay around to finish the job.he seems very loyal and has a great working relationship with randy learner.he needs four more big signings in january and villa will be in europe next year.
M.O.N. would be mad to take the job and if he does he’s guaranteed to get burnt. At villa he has a promising squad with an owner that has total faith in him. Once again when villa look to be on track the FA threatens to bring us undone. I say get an international that will tell it as it is without the visions of grandeur of the EPL.
I think peoples veiws of Martin O’Neil are in correct. He’s a footballing man who loves the game and knows exactly what he is doing. AVFC is the best place for MON tho as international management is very different to club management. On a Villa perspective, we definately need to keep him on the payroll!
