‘Sick’ school gets clean bill

Experts have now given a clean bill of health to a revamped Black Country school which was at at the centre of a “sick building” storm.

The Meadows School in Oldbury hit the headlines when its former headteacher said she could not work there because it made her ill.

Angela Duncan claimed she had to work in an office three miles away in West Bromwich to avoid the breathing problems she attrributed to The Meadows following its £5 million refurbishment. And other staff went off sick with asthma-type complaints, resulting in the council having to fork out around £1 million for supply staff.

But a medical assessment costing thousands of pounds, carried out over the last 18 months, has concluded there are no problems at the school. It also revealed there were less incidences of children taken ill at The Meadows School compared to other schools in Sandwell.

New headteacher Gordon Phillips, who was officially appointed earlier this week, said: “I started in September 2006 and I’ve never had a day off sick.”

Mr Phillips added that he felt there was now a more positive atmosphere at the school.

This happened at my work place, people going off sick with breathing problems. All that could be said was it may be (SBS) sick building syndrome.
