It’s slow, but it turns heads

fiat-punto.jpgEver since I was a child, all I’d ever think about was the day I could start driving a 5-million horsepower car that could get me from Wolverhampton to Australia in an hour, writes Paul from Wolverhampton.

I remember when I used to sit in my father’s big ugly Volvo’s in the 1980s - the journey to visit relatives often used to take over two hours.

We’d arrive, drink tea, then make the journey home again. I used to think I could easily do the journey in 10 minutes, drink tea AND get a kebab, then drive back home in 10 minutes - high hopes considering at that age I didn’t know about things like acceleration or insurance!

So when I finally turned 17, I started taking my lessons. On the day I took my test, the driving examiner gave me an ungrateful smile and told me I’d passed - it’s still one the greatest days of my life.

After that, all I did was search through Autotrader looking for a car, but the Porsche GT’s I was wanted were, unsurprisingly, out of reach - I had to think about my budget and, most importantly, that rotten word that makes every teenager sigh: “insurance”.

In the end, I bought an N-reg Fiat Punto. It cost me the earth and along with a stupendously high insurance, has practically emptied my savings.

The downside is that it takes three hours to reach 60mph, and the lack of power steering means that when you turn the wheel to navigate a roundabout, you end up flying over it!

But it has had new alloy wheels and a banging sound system, both of which turn heads wherever it goes - and hey - that’s what every teenage lad wants. Heads turned!

The iPod competition is now over, but we’d still love to hear about your car - Click here to send us your review, a picture of the car, your name and where you’re from.
