Romulus 1 Willenhall Town 1

Willenhall Town FCWillenhall made it three games unbeaten with a hard-fought 1-1 draw away at Romulus last night.

In a very slow opening Willenhall took the lead with the first real chance of the game. A corner from the right by Craig Milligan found the head of Dan Harvey, and despite the efforts of several Romulus defenders the ball finally managed to find it’s way into the net.

As the visitors continued to create the better chances the lead was nearly doubled on 23 minutes.

Adam Cain’s perfectly weighted free-kick was met by Ross Brown, but his header was just over the bar.

A real flashpoint came after 25 minutes when, after what seemed an innocuous challenge just inside the area by a Willenhall defender, the referee awarded a penalty that seemed to come as a surprise to both sides.

From Willenhall’s point of view justice was done as Tyrone Fagan hit the penalty high and wide.

But Romulus did draw level with the last chance of the half.  A lack of communication between Harvey and keeper Ryan Price allowed Leon Mitchell to nip in to squeeze the ball home.

Pressing

There was a blow the the Lockmen seconds into the second half when recent signing Marlon Walters was stretchered off with a nasty looking injury.

Willenhall kept pressing and went close to adding a second goal as Harvey sent a header just wide before Ross Miller fired just over.

A superb ball over the top from Bruce Wheeler found the run of Craig Gregg, the striker did well to hold off his man but his powerful drive again flew just over.

Willenhall had two more chances to win the game inside the last 10 minutes.

Firstly, Tyrone Barnett did well to hold the ball up on the edge of the area before managing to turn and fire a ferocious shot centimetres over the bar.

Perhaps the better chance came to Craig Milligan. Again it was Barnett who burst down the right wing before finding the run of Milligan with a good cross, but unfortunately for the left back his short was hit straight at keeper Matt Harris.

Romulus: Harris, Tiernan, Hatfield, M. Batchelor, Folkes, Lanns, Heath (McGhee), R. Batchelor, Fagan (Allen), Mitchell, Stevenson.

Willenhall: Price, Wheeler, Milligan, Brown, Newell, Harvey, Miller, Walters (Perry), Barnett, Gregg, Cain (Russell).
