I don’t think we will hear the familiar cries of “Freddy, Freddy” at the Bristol City game this coming Saturday, writes Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd.
At a game where we dominated until he missed that penalty at Portman Road, I think Freddy has potentially blown his big chance for a place in the starting 11.
Back in the reserves, and we all know how much he will enjoy that!
I still think reinforcements will be needed in the striking department come January if we are to push on for promotion or at least the play-offs.
Teams around us fighting for the same positions currently have much more potent strike-forces than Wolves.
With 14 league goals between them, Watford have the brilliance of King or Henderson to call upon.
James Beattie, Kevin Phillips, Andy Gray and Ricardo Fuller, all recognised strikers doing the business for their respective clubs and scoring on a regular basis.
I think what we have at Wolves are lots of support strikers such as Keogh, Bothroyd, Elliott and Ward, but in Eastwood it was supposed to be different.
This was supposedly going to be the forward who would get us the goals to catapult the club to promotion.
At Wolves we all love a centre forward hero. Down the years we have been spoilt with the brilliance of Bully, Keano, The Doog and King John to make us all proud to be a Wanderer.
Can Freddy ever join this illustrious list?
Or will he join the much longer list of Wolves strikers who have failed to cut the mustard at Molineux; Connolly, Flo, Frankowski, Iverson, Ketsbaia, Branch, Taylor, Al Jaber and Rousell, I could go on and on……
Amazingly Freddy is still the club’s top scorer this season with 4 goals.
We would all dearly love for Freddy to come good and start banging in the goals.
But it looks like he will have to wait for his turn in the spotlight again after that diabolical penalty miss on Saturday.
Bothroyd looked a real handful against Cardiff and although slightly more subdued against Ipswich, he is looking like a better long-term bet than the misfiring Freddy.
Personally I would like to see us dip into the transfer market in January and make a big signing up front.
Billy Sharp? I know I’ve posed this question before, but no one is banging in the goals on a regular basis, and until they do, I think its time to throw some potential names in the hat.
Wolves fans, what do you think? Have your say below

Rasiak. hes the target man we need.
I am sorry but I was excited when we signed Freddie, but what i have seen of him this season he is not worth it and he does not deserve to play at the moment in the 1st team, he lacks drive & ability which is not a good sign, he may go out on loan or we need to sign another striker. I was one of those fella’s shouting for him to play, now i think it best to leave the team selection to the manager.
Billy Sharp! Just look how many goals he’s scored for Sheff Utd. A big fat duck egg!
NO BILLY SHARP ! Damnit, we must have higher aspirations - Sharp, Eastood, Keogh, they’re all good but we need HOT !
We definitely need a another pop at the trabsfer market, and I’ll say again, Mick, leave the Sunderland misfit bin alone !
In the meantime, WHY NOT GIVE ROSA GO !
COME ON YOU WOLVES !
we won’t sign anyone better than freddie, mccarthy has shattered his confidence.if you’re not one of his favourites he will do that,he did it to bothroyd but he isn’t as sensitive as freddie & handled it better.he should stop having digs at him,put his arm around him & see if that works.i know he comes from a tough background but that doesn’t mean to say he will respond to critism.
I hear Dimitar Berbatov is unhappy at spurs…
I think Wolves need a new defence first off.
James Collins of West Ham United a much needed CB for when Breen & Craddock Go at the end of the season, I think would be a good addition in my mind, & Secondly a Certain LB is needed as Micky Gray is injury prone like Rob Edwards who many prefer at CB, but I think Stephen O’Halloran from Aston Villa would do a good job at LB for Wolves. Finaly onto the Strikers maybe Anthony Elding from Stockport who has scored 8 goals in 11 games so far this season or possibly Chris Zebroski from Millwall who is currently on loan to Torquay United & has Scored 10 goals in 16 games. Take A Look Mick!
I just dont understand what happened to Freddy. When we first signed him i was excited as i thought we finally had the missing link. He started pre season well with a few goals, then carried that on with the 4 he scored at the start of the season and everything looked sweet. Then he had a poor performance in the Hull game (as did everyone) and since then i dont know what has happened. The only thing that i can think is that being dropped after the Hull game has seriously damaged his confidence. But in the games i have seen him play this season he looks uninterested and lazy. I hate to say this cause i was one of the people screaming for him when he was dropped but Mick was right to drop him. I just hope that he finds some confidence soon cause if he does leave us in January or in the summer he is one of those players who will probably go somewhere else and do brilliant which will make me sick. Come on Mick work your magic and sort him out. The talent is there somewhere just find a way to bring it out of him.
no.4 lee is bang on we do need HOT not lukewarm, lets get a couple of big names in jan,so mr morgan start digging deep .
Do you think they might cut there losses with him and try and ship him out in january?
if we do get a ”hot” player who will it be? If they are that ”hot” surely their club wont sell, or if they do it would be a big transfer fee.We have splashed out big money before for players that have flopped, I for one dont think paying big will get the result. Mick needs to find a Kightly bargain in the striker department.
I don’t think things are that bad. We need an experienced striker and I think the best thing to do is find a loan player, someone who is calm in front of goal and could pass on some experience too. A big target man would be the right thing to do. If MM plays with 2 wingers then it seems obvious to me that we need someone to attack the ball. Please MM no more young hopefuls, we need seasoned pros. now!
Nathan
I am not critisizing your blog
per se,
however the column inches dedicated
to the FE debate, has gone beyond the ridiculous,
and is a longer running soap than
eastenders.
We all assume, the players and staff do not read these pages,
but you never know,
if indeed they do,
all these negative FE in MM out,
then MM in FE out,
can only be detrimental.
There are much bigger and positive
things happening at your club,
one defeat in seven for instance,
it`s seems that not small fact is being overlooked,
and playing a very poor second fiddle to the epic proportioned FE debate.
Sorry guys,
just my veiw.
I think you all need to remember that the likes of Freddy Eastwood and Billy Sharp were only prolific in Leagues 1 and 2. They have never made it in the Championship or even the Premiership. It’s a big step up to the championship and even bigger one to the premiership. We need someone who has been there and done it preferbly from the premiership. It’s no good looking in the lower leagues for quality strikers if we want to go anywhere. If they were any good they would already be at one of the premiership clubs.
We need players who are on the fringe of the big teams and are so good that they don’t want to sell them. Loan them and try and entice them to stay.
You pays for what you get !!!!
Look how well Ince and Irwin did for us !!!!
still dont think mm is the man for the wolves look what ince has done at mk dons ince will be a premier manager long before mm anybody like to bet agaist it give rossa a game
Dont write Freddy off yet… So he missed penalty… so what??? how many wolves players have missed penalties in the last 4 years… Loads!
Give the bloke a chance… He looked good at Cardiff last week and showed some good touches.
I think we need to read between the lines… it was on here last week that Freddy has promised Mick that he will change his game to suit Micks game plan… He obviously doesn’t want to and he shouldn’t have too… Mick new what he was buying when he signed him… Give him a chance to play his natural game and he will get us the goals…
Get back on the horse boys and batter Bristol City on Saturday…
The good things are: Kightly, Olofinjana and Foley, if we are not promoted by the end of the season then we will be saying goodbye to all three. Just like under Dave Jones, the club has to build on what is a solid foundation if they stop moving forward they will go backwards. For me we are no further forward than last season, in fact without McIndoe we are slightly worse. I feel that it is time for Mr. Morgan to invest some cash because this squad is not going to be good enough (in depth) to get us into the premiership. Jarvis and Gobern, need to come good and we need at least one “goal scorer”!
Is finishing 4th or 5th good enough? If you think it is then stick with the lads!
Sorry guys,
just my view!
we only lost one game in four so chill…
abdonwolf, I had to double check that it wasnt me that had written that !!!! Agree wholeheartedly, we have to striker whilst the iron is hot - and throw everything at this season - or we’ll lose our prize assets (Keano, Naylor, Miller (hmmm), Lescott…)
I am starting to wonder if Mick has the balls to guide our club to great heights - he’s a brilliant second tier manager for sure, and knows how to find a diamond in the rough, but WE DO NOT LOOK ANYTHING LIKE THE FORCE OUR BUDGET SUGGESTS.
This is no “big club” rant… put simply, we’ve a highy ambitious investor, who will not want to see his club spend another 13 years bobbing up and down in the Championship
COME ON YOU WOLVES!
Nathan I usually like your blogs, but this one , no sorry… Let me quote you “At a game where we dominated until he missed that penalty at Portman Road, I think Freddy has potentially blown his big chance for a place in the starting 11.” Did you not watch/listen to the game… The penalty was in the FIRST 5 MINS. Wake up man and smell the coffee Mighty Muppett (MM) has totally destroyed a promising striker because Mighty Muppett is narrow minded and egotistcle and is going to bring wolves down just as the bhati brothers did. SM do something now before its TOO LATE….. And YES I AM A WOLVES FAN AND HAVE BEEN FOR 35 YEARS
Personally i think we’ve got 4 strikers there, who are good enough to bang in the goals at this level, its up to the management to get the best out of them. I think in the transfer market we should be looking to buy one or two really good creative mid fielders. I think this is where the problem lies.Oli, Potter,Gibson and co just don’t cut it.
If we had 4 strikers that were good enough to bang the goals in, then they would be banging goals in, would they not?
And…
Oli, has been one of our best players all season, Potter has been in and out and Gibbson has played a game and a half. Please…..only a girl could say that sort of stuff!!!!!!!!!!
godfather 100% correct,MM destroyed him, narrow minded big head. Although heads shouldnt go down over a missed penalty and dont say the 2 long distance away games effected us,load of rubbish. Freddy has lost confidence not before but after the hull match. Whos that down too? He was doin alright up until then. MM ?
13. Wbaforever excellent point well argued. From a Baggie as well I’m bowled over lol!
Bojangles Wolf : Dont write Freddy off yet… So he missed penalty… so what??? how many wolves players have missed penalties in the last 4 years… Loads!
Excellent point, I remember not so long ago, not one of the players could score a penalty for love nor money, final scored one and “we’ve scored a penalty” rung round Molineux.
I’m not suprised Freddy has had such a big drop in confidence is low. Was scoring goals then suddenly droped from the side. Give the guy a bit of a run in 1st team and im sure it will be fruitfull.
I know MM keeps saying Rosa isn’t in his plans, but he seems to be the most consisent player in the wolves “SQUAD”, they keep saying it a squad, not just the 16, 11 on the field and the subs its everyone, just wish MM would give the Rosa a break, could be just what were looking for, how many goals has scored in the reserves, i rest my case!
Steve Howard- a big target man at derby will get goals and plenty of them in this league. 1-rasiak I would love to see it but a bidding war is likely with him and do we want to waste money? The outcome I would most love to see is freddy come good, I mean it’s not as tho he came here and cudnt cut it he was on fire AT WOLVES!!! then all of a sudden he can’t buy a goal and his confidence seems shot to pieces.
Apologies if my blog came across as negative this week, that wasn’t my intention. I want Freddy to do well, as I want all Wolves players to do well. However, how many chances can you give a player before you have to turn to other options?
I wanted to stir up a bit of debate by stating that clubs in and around Wolves who are fighting for promotion have strikeforces who are returning goals.
Wolves have had a good start to the season, but I can’t make every one of my blogs a positive, how utterly boring would that be?
I don’t believe MM has destroyed his confidence. Mick give his players a chance based on their commitment to the cause, not just because they may well be the fan’s flavour of the month.
And as for WBAforever? As I have already stated, Wolves are in a rich vein of form at the moment, but I wanted to raise the subject of the one area of the pitch, where things just haven’t really gelled for us. Rightly or wrongly this was the subject of the blog.
Lets see if my Wolves all time XI on Friday stirs up the same amount of debate!
Nathan
if my post came across as a direct
critisism, then please accept my apologies,
that was certainly not my intent.
It was more a comment about the repetitive nature of a story that has appeared here in at least a dozen differing guises.
And that it still dictated the headlines after your frankly,
superb win against Cardiff.
Anyway mate i DO enjoy your bloggs,
they always spurn an high level of interest.
Wbaforever, not at all! I probably am covering THE subject that has been discussed the most so far by Wolves fans. I think I even said myself that I was getting extremely bored talking about the Freddy vs Jay subject and then went had started the whole debate again!
The win against Cardiff was fantastic, probably our best result, if not performance of the season so far.
Funnily enough my blogs don’t take me ages to write, but when I spent a couple of days writing the piece on the Wolves International XI, it seemed to stir up absolutely no interest at all!
A little bit of controversy goes a long way!
Nathan, I have a firend who is a Sunderland season ticket holder of many years.I spoke to him after the appointment of MM and his words were ” He is a one season wonder” seems he was right.
Does anyone know why he continues to buy/pursue his Black cat failures? They didn’t do any good at Sunderland and they ain’t doing it at Wolves.
Nathan, Freddy as started 5 league games for us this season with 3 goals, not a bad return?. He missed a penalty so what, is he the first to do so. Freddy needs games.
