Two Wolverhampton builders hope to build an international reputation for themselves in a bricklaying tournament in the United States. Mick and John Daffern are the first ever British entrants in the Spec Mix 500 tournament.

They must prove they are the fastest brickies in town if they are to take home thousands of dollars in prize money. The brothers, who started Oxley-based J&G Building Ltd in 2003, entered the contest, to be held in Las Vegas in January, after seeing footage on the internet of a previous tournament.

Video journalist Andy Toft went along to watch Mick in action.

Best of luck to Mick and his mate. We at SPEC MIX are glad to have a strong competitor from Britain along with a Canadian from Vancouver. This year’s contest will be very competitive–many great Brickies. Win or not, we guarantee Mick and company enjoy the event as well as a few days in Las Vegas.

I’m looking forward to meeting you in Las Vegas, and very happy to see you helping to turn the Spec Mix Bricklayer 500 into an international competition. Someday it’ll be so big they’ll just add the whole thing to the Summer Olympics, possibly 2016 in Chicago?

I hope you were sandbagging on the news video. I suggest you get a coach to lower your waste motion. But, good luck and bring some of that valuable english money with you to Vegas–We won’t video you spending it. Mid-west (Iowa) Mason.
