Villa errors to blame: Mellberg

Aston Villa defender Olof MellbergOlof Mellberg revealed a ‘communication error’ between Zat Knight and Scott Carson was down to Villa conceding the first goal in the 4-1 defeat to Manchester United.

“I felt we were in control but we gave away the goals. With the first one there was a communication error,” said Mellberg.

“Zat thought the keeper shouted so he left the ball. It just came from nothing.

“The second goal was the same - Wayne Rooney was on his own and we should take care of that.

“The third goal was an own goal. You can’t afford to do that against Manchester United.”

Mellberg added: “We felt there were goals in the game and we created some chances in the first half.

“We could have been two up and they didn’t look that dangerous either. But they scored from the chances they had and credit to them for that.

“We got off to a good start and the goals we gave away came out of nothing so it was really disappointing.”

Mellberg admits it’s going to be tough to bounce back at Bolton on Sunday.

“Bolton is always a tough place to go,” he said.

“They have improved, they didn’t start really well but they’ve improved a bit so I’m sure it will be a tough game.”
