Ron Atkinson was today linked with a shock return to football management as part of a big-money takeover at non-league Halesowen Town.
The former Aston Villa manager will be asked to be part of the management team at The Grove alongside former Kettering manager Morell Maison, sources insisted today.
But 68-year-old Atkinson today denied he is about to take an official role at the Southern League club, who sacked manager Martin O’Connor yesterday and appointed Maison as his successor ahead of a takeover in the next two weeks.
Atkinson was director of football at Kettering when Maison was first-team manager.
Halesowen Town has been up for sale since chairman Nigel Pitt announced his intention to stand down two months ago.
But the ex-Villa and Manchester United boss, who infamously lost his job as ITV’s top football summariser because of a racist remark, insisted he had no knowledge of the takeover consortium.
Atkinson said: “It may well be I will turn up there in an informal capacity but that is all it would be.”
Atkinson has been out of football since leaving Kettering in April after four months as director of football, a day after Maison.

good on ya ron, rons always been a big name in football,we all know what happened a few years back, but why should he be left out to dry,so all the BEST BIG RON ITS GREAT TO SEE YA COMING BACK TO WHERE YOU BELONG.
good old ron, loved his peterboro role couple years ago
i think he needs to manage league 2 side though
he didnt last long at kettering or woking wherever he went
Well said Besty
Ron`s supposed off air tirade was shocking, and he duly paid the price,
having met Ron during his first tenure at the Albion,
i was surprised and saddened by his outburst, as was the rest of the nation i would imagine.
Although what he said was very ugly,
i AM sure, he meant no malice, and equaly sure he regrets it,
i personaly think the punishment, has far outweighed the crime.
Welcome back to one of the great characters of the game.
Good man Ron, time to forget what was blown out of proportion a few seasons ago.The 3 Degree’s thats all I’ll say. Best of luck.
this is a big moment for Halesowen and as fans we look forward to the exciting times ahead. I personaly thank Martin Oconnor and Graham Hyde for all their hard work in the last 12 months.
The whole thing was blown out of proportion, it was a silly mistake but the way the footballing world treated him was terrible and they all should hang there heads in shame not ron. Bunch of bullies who like to get on the band wagon, just like politics really.
At least he’s coming to an half decent club this time.
