Halesowen’s Sean Waite lifted himself well clear of the strong opposition in the latest Bridgnorth A S open contest on the River Severn.
This was held on the right bank above the town and, as usual, barbel made up most of the catches.
The Royal British Legion club member hooked nine similar sized specimens for 54-7-0.
He used a swimfeeder to offer halibut pellets on peg 14 near the Hawthorne tree. Walsall-based all round expert Ian Winter, who now competes for Bridgnorth, was second with 40-3-0 of chub.
Ranging between 1 lb and 2 lb these responded to a swimfeeder and maggots at a peg near the pylons above ‘Gladstone channel’.
Nick Bretton (Bridgnorth) was third with 24-0-0 of barbel to 2 lbs over Derek Causer (Coleport) 23-10-0 and Steve Slade (Wolverhampton) 21-11-0.
The second fixture in the latest Soho Loop canal open series saw local lad Mel Howard come to the fore with a 7-6-0 mixed bag.
Drawn favourably on peg number 77 at Clissold Street he used the reliable squatt and pinkie maggot approach to tempt lots of gudgeon plus a few small ’skimmer’ bream.
Ben Garbett (Royal Mail) was second with 6-10-0 from peg 48 towards the prison gates on the Winson Green section where he put together a similar catch with the same method.
Third placed Gary Ward (Cradley Heath Labour) weighed in a 6-0-0 over Pete Hatton (Wassell Grove) 5-8-0 and Simon Nickless (Saints) 5-5-0.
In form Bilston tackle dealer John Hall added another victory to his ever expanding list with a 5-0-6 best catch in the Wolverhampton A A’s ‘Over Fifty Five’ open contest.
The mid-week event took place on the Cross Keys where Hall drew peg number two near the Farm Bridge.
Local lad George Davies (Smithy’s) was second with a similar 4-2-11-0 and Wilf Kneller (Midleisure) 4-1-0, Bert Simmill (Brittons Tackle) 4-0-0, and John Bickley (West End) 2-14-10.
Three close catch weights over 8 lbs highlighted a cracking open match on the Shropshire Union canal at Brewood.
The event was held between bridges ten and eleven and it was ‘unlucky for some’ peg 13 which yielded an 8-13-8 top weight for Carl Davies.
Sponsored by the tackle shop he made the most of some extra space to catch all small roach, gudgeon and perch with squatt maggots feed and bait.
Phil Taylor was secon with 8-7-8 and Dave Pinches (Goldthorne Social) 8-6-6 was third.
The Norbury sections of the Shropshire Union canal again threw up an impressive list of catches in the Stoke City A A’ open event.
Keith Hulland who also won the previous event at the same venue won with 18-15-0 by drawing towards High bridge where he attracted chub, roach, perch and small bream with chopped worms and casters.
Lancashire visitor Phil Johnson (North West) was second with 12-1-8 and third placed Dean Williams’s (Colmic Isaac Walton) 9-5-2 mixed haul came from a peg in the middle of the wood.
Kevin Adderley (W B Clarke) 9-4-13, Steve Faux (Eclipse) 8-11-1 and Paul Ross (Shakespeare) 8-1-10 were the pick of the rest.
The talented Tipton VDE team clinched the Dams & Lock sponsored Summer League title in style with a very clear victory in the final round.
This was held along the Birmingham Fazeley canal at Tyburn where a guest lady angler Sam Perkins surprised every one with a 7-11-0 best individual catch.
Fishing for the Preston Innovations team she caught all roach to four ounces with punched bread and hempseed from a peg by the cinema bridge.
Jason Cunningham headed the Tipton VDE sheet with a second best 7-0-8, again roach taken with hempseed from a peg near the old canopy.
Third man Rob Middleton (Shakespeare) caught 6-3-0 of roach on punched bread and he was chased by Richard Guest (Tipton VDE) 6-0-8.
Dave Horton (dams & Lock) 6-0-0 and Phil Cox (Tipton VDE) 5-10-0 team penalty points were Tipton VDE 11, Shakespeare 18, Dams & Lock Silver 24.
Final league placings were Tipton VDE 83, Shakespeare 96 and Tipton VDE Gold 113.
