Molineux hitman Stephen Elliott today reflected on another night of missed opportunities and admitted: ‘The pressure is on for Saturday now’.
Wolves edged an uninspiring contest at the Walkers Stadium last night but couldn’t find a way past Gary Megson’s well-drilled Leicester side.
Forward Elliott missed one of the few clear-cut chances after he was freed by Seyi Olofinjana in the first half but elsewhere it was a game of few chances.
It leaves Wolves with two points from their last two away games - a record that Elliott thinks will look much better if they can beat Coventry at Molineux on Saturday.
“It was one of those games in the end but at least we are still on a little unbeaten run. Now we move on to a home game with Coventry and can hopefully win that,” he said.
“We’ve got to win on Saturday now and everyone’s just looking forward to that game.
“If we can win against Coventry then you’d look at the last four games and say that eight points - two home wins and two away draws - is certainly not bad.”
Elliott’s industrious display was overshadowed by the missed chance - but the forward refused to be downcast afterwards.
“It was a difficult enough game with the way they set up and although we worked hard they did what they set out to do and it kind of fizzled out in the end,” he said.
“I’m happy enough to be playing again because I’ve missed a lot of football. To be back there feeling fit and playing again is good.
“I had the good chance tonight and maybe should have hit it first time but hopefully I’ll get some more.
“It’s such a tight league and you can’t tell too much at the moment but obviously we’ll be looking to win our home game.”
Elliott was yesterday recalled to Steve Staunton’s Ireland squad, along with Kevin Foley, Darren Potter and Andy Keogh.
And he is happy to be back in the international fold.
“Obviously I’m delighted to be back in the Irish squad, it was great to see my name back in there and a big boost,” he said.

Quote from above… “Elliott’s industrious display was overshadowed by the missed chance - but the forward refused to be downcast afterwards”.
That about sums up MM and his policy regards strikers… I bet he was delighted !!
for once I Must agree
Happy, you have a knack with words !! Agree with you whole heartedly. I would rather have a less industrious player like Eastwood on the pitch who maybe would pop up in the right place at the right time to score a couple of goals. Just need the defence to do their bit then !!
elliot has nothing to worry about. He can carry on running around and not scoring and still get in the squad because he is one of micks mates
See, even Happy_baggie can see the obvious problem and he’s from Sandwell!
Beat Coventry on Saturday, eh? I’ll believe it when I see it! I already have visions of Michael Mifsud running riots around our defence and getting a hat-trick. Have you seen the form he’s been in lately? It’s called scoring every game (a concept little understood by our forwards). Let’s hope you’re right Mr Elliott, and we win this one. Preferably with a better margin than we beat Hull!
was happy baggie happy on the way home from wembly?
We can remember the expresssion “goal poacher” or “goal hanger”
Quite frankly, we couldnt care less if a striker sat in the oppositions half for most of the game; just as long as he put the ball in the back of the net - simple as!!!
We also just wish these palyers would just shut up and do the talking with their feet!!!
No we dont feel sorry for you - You’re paid very well to score goals so just DO IT!!!
NEXT!
UP THE WOLVES!!!
Mick you will be out of a job , very soon you can not play two players that play the same Get more work out of Eastwood
After last season I thought we had finally managed to get rid of most of our knee-jerk reaction, moaning brigade - reading the comments above and the general type of posting lately makes me realise that this is not the case. Same old Wolves fans, the stupid thing is that you do not realise how your whinging actually CONTRIBUTES to a lack of progress. Folk are entitled to their opinion but it is far, FAR too early to judge anything regarding this season - if we get to March and are still languishing in tenth place then perhaps you have a right to sound off then. Leave MM to get on with his job - if he feels that Eastwood is not displaying the right attitude or endeavour then who are we to question him? He is the manager and should be allowed to pick the team he feels deserve the starting berths. Until some of you shake off this attitude, we will never progress as a club…
right lads im off to the match now i will comment you when i get back,id like to send you txt alerts with each goal but ive only got a tenner on me fone
boing boing
i agree with brian, mick will be out by xmas is this misrable form continues.
they need to start winni g very quickly, we are playing catch up already!
Frankowski, a proven goal scorer, had his contract cancelled because his confidence was shot to pieces. Lets hope McCarthy doesn’t send Freddie the same way. I can well see where Toshack is coming from.
MM is losing the plot. Freddy would be in any championship sde scoring loads of goals. MM wontn pick him cos he wont “put a shift in, in the reserves”.
However, he still picks Breen who is so slow he couldnt catch cold.
I agree with the comment on what Mifsud will do on saturdy. I was at Cov last year and Cov couldve won by 8 or 9 goals. Breen was lucky to stay on the pitch after obvious pen not given.
MM does have his players that he is loyal too. We havent moved on from last year(moved back if anything).
I dont like to say it but Melton Mowbry has totally outshone MM in the transfer market and has a team fav for promotion producing attacking football
Sort it Mick
4-Your comment is spot on.
How much longer is the chairman going to put up with MM picking his mates over a striker who is a proven goalscorer. Fair enough Elliott got goals at Sunderland when they went up under MM but is struggling in front of goal now. Give him a few reserve games to get him used to finding the net again.
just funny how the wolves comments in the summer on here about us buying nobodys from abroad and them buying big name players has come back to haunt them! as we sang in the smethwick on sunday….. are you watching wonderers!
Not having a pop at you Mick but its a bit Irish having your top striker on the bench????????????
MORGAN get this sorted out!!!!!!!!
It’s really annoying how expectation has destroyed our hunger on the ball, maybe we should buy hartson, he’s always hungry..hehe
Yet again the first comment is from a West Brom fan. You lot must have far too much time on your hands!
Can’t you lot shut your mouths up now for gods sake, It’s like a recored going round and round. Boring stop following the sheep people.
We should NOT forget that MM is useless with strikers, remember the Jon Stead saga nuff said
There is something strange here outside football I suspect. Mick was ready to admit to a mistake in sending Craddock to Stoke and dogs in the street would pick Eastwood ahead of Elliot every time on chances to gaols ratio.
I reckon that there must have been a serious falling out between the two.
its obvious to all of us why not mick and co?
i agree with many other posts that i want a goalgrabber, goal poacher, penalty box type whatever you want to call it. you need someone in an around the box who can regularly stick the ball in the back of the net.
simple problem solved!!!
all this industry and running counts for nothing if you can’t score.
mick knew what type of player eastwood was so why buy him if he not good enough to replace elliot and keogh. that must realy hurt freddies pride and confidence.
come on the wolves!!!
SSUPPPERRR SUPPPERRR MICCKKK!!! (Mick you will be out of a job , very soon ) Yes he is a the worst manager we have had since Stan Cullis.
terry bull…no i dont think he was happy on the way back from wembley, but it was well worth losing at wembley to beat you twice (more) in the play offs!
i personally fink mm is doing the rite thing making freddy work for his place but i think he shud b one of the first on the team sheet with gray kights and keogh bcuz they are all top class players i think elliott is absolute tripe i really dont like him CUM ON FREDDY !!!!
10 / gregg cooper - with the exception of you and realistic wolf there is a severe lack of patience amongst the posters on this board.
everyones smacking the panic button after a month !!
the negativity will pour off the stands on saturday if we aren’t winning inside 15 minutes - nothing ever changes.
For Greg Cooper
Knee jerk reaction ?? Apart from one grossly under funded season in the premier we,ve been stuck in this division for sixteen wasted years, suffering a succession of crap managers with MM the latest. Do you look at the league table ? Do you seriously think we are in with a chance this season ?
Some goals from midfield would be nice!!
johnny cash…..you lost at wembley and a possible 50million in the prem.just to beat us twice.thats it mate keep telling yourself that. maybe you ll believe it. lemon.
Keogh and Elliott would need to be on crutches before MM would even consider not playing them. Mark my words, Bothroyd and Eastwood will pack their bags soon and be off, and who can blame them?
The McCarthy era will end in tears, sooner rather than later I hope
Greg Cooper - agree completely.
BREEN OUT, WARD OUT, GIVE ROSA A TRY!! I LISTEN EVERY WEEKEND ON THE NET I AM HAPPY I DONT HAVE TO PAY AND WATCH. EASTWOOD SHOULD PLAY BUT HE IS LAZY!!! WE ARE JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!! UP THE WOLVES!!
freddy eastwood and andy keogh for me the best two strikers in the championship
wba 1 stoke 1
the baggies nearly lost to stoke
ha ha ha ha
up the wolves
down the baggies
Greg Cooper, I respect what your views, but come on….do you really think Wolves fans should have to wait till March to state an opinion? That’s what the game’s all about: opinion. Besides, the season will be over by then and, if it’s all gone t*ts-up, even YOU may be asking, “why didn’t Mick do something about it?”.
Personally, I’d rather see a ‘lazy’ Eastwood do nuffin for 80 mins and bag a couple of goals than see Elliot or Keogh put a shift in. the game’s all about goals, no frustration because you’re watching your star striker keep the bench warm.
Remember the point you made about whingeing Wolves fans not realising that they’re contributing to our lack of progress? Well, by not giving Freddie a fair run in the team, you could level the same accusation at Merlin. After all, what message does dropping Eastwood send to our opponents? They must be rubbing their hands with glee knowing they aint gonna face a PROVEN goalscorer for 90 mins.
Mick buys him then won’t play him…that makes sense, doesn’t it? Sorry, but 9 games is more than long enough to see things aint working up front. If you get the sack, Mick, you’ll have nobody to blame but yourself.
no negativity pouring from the south bank we support wolves the 11 players in gold n black whoever the manager is
Greg Cooper - Are you Jez Moxey in disguise? The fans can clearly see that Elliott and Keogh combo misses more than it scores
The goals ratio hasnt changed from last season and the league stats dont lie
Moxey came out with this fans pressure garbage not so long ago; but the fans watch our top scorer sit on the bench, get slated in the media by his manager; and you say the fans should get off his back? Moxey uses the same BS nearly every season - ooh the fans ooh the pressure? Isnt it the same for EVERY similar sized club in the Championship? So whats the difference?
By the way, if you leave a player sat on the bench, ignore him and then slate him for a 20 minutes performance - who on earth would blame him for not wanting to bust a gut for MM? Oh and dont forget whilst this is going on - the manager’s constantly praising his “chosen two” of Keogh and Elliott (Irish & Ex Sunderland)
Is it the fans or a case of bad man management???
ALL THESE MATES MM HAS BOUGHT IN IE THE IRISH CONNECTION… DO SOME OF YOU AGREE THEY GOT SUNDERLAND RELEGATED .. THEY WERE NOT GOOD ENOUGH THEN AND ARE FAR WORSE NOW. MR MORGAN ACT NOW JUST LIKE IN YOUR TV SHOW, BE RUTHLESS. OR IT WILL BE A LONG COLD WINTER OF DISCONTENT. LST SEASON’S RUN IN WAS A FALSE READING OF THIS WOLVES SIDE.
Funny how 1 minute were saying, We need a defence (even I said that I’ll admit), Craddock comes back and we have 3 clean sheets on the bounce 2 away from home, true were better than Leicester and Plymouth but the season aint over yet, and they’re still every chance we’ll be in challenging for top 6 or more. Tbf when Jarvis comes back, wait for a different team. Quote me on that!
(16) baggie77 It’s ‘Wanderers’ not ‘Wonderers’ you will watch in Wonder however, when we beat ya November!
terrywalsallbaggie, just shows how sure of themselves you & your fans are, premiership, your having a laugh!
I agree with Elliott that the two away draws will look good if we can win against Coventry. We kept a clean sheet and perhaps much of that is down to the work Elliott and Keogh put in! Come on, let’s go for that win on Saturday.
ITS A LONG SEASON YOU IMPATIENT OAFS
ALL THE STRIKERS WILL BE USED.
IF WE MESS UP OUR NEXT TWO GAMES THEN ITS TIME TO HIT THE PANT WETTING BUTTON
7 - I was unhappy on the way back from Wembley (how come wolves fans can never spell wembley ?), but then I watched the dvd of our season and guess what…. I was HAPPY again !!
Our highlights dvd was REALLY LONG this year - hours and hours of goals… bet you cant wait to get yours in May.
I am not worried we’ll be alright, Sunderland had a bad start and prospered. Its not the end of the world…yet.
Teams that won’t be where they are now at the end of the season incude..Bristol C and Scunthorpe..Stoke will fade, as usual. This league despite being competitive IS quite predictable really. A top six is a realistic possibility. Watford and Albion look too strong for most in this league…SUFC will not feature, neither will Charlton significantly. The door is open!!
Don’t close it just yet…
Cov will provide more of an attacking threat on Saturday which will give us the chance to counter…I think that will reap rewards. If Eastwood is struggling for form let him wait…we need players who really want to play!!! stick to your guns MM. Don’t let it be said I’m fickle…
Ca’nt score ca’nt defend looks like another poor season.Probably more spin from Moxey & co.and no real money being spent on the team other than treatment for the older players.
Now I always considered myself a fairly bright lad (choice of football team excepted!) but am I missing something? The last few of Eastwoods appearances have been poor performances with few chances and a disjointed looking team. Even the last 30 minutes on Tuesday did nothing to improve his form. I’ve no doubt that he’ll be back to his goalscoring best and will have probably been coached into a more complete player but on current evidence the team that’s starting is not perfect but far better than the team that lost to Hull. Argue if you like but the stats will say I’m right.
Ray Stubbs (TSU)
TBH I cant see us getting more than a point out of the next two games, Charlton have found there feet and Coventry are full of confidence but a little unpredictable…
I hope that we get at least four points but I cant see where the goals are coming from…
I have slated McCarthy a bit in the past few days and I apologise for it but… I still think if we fail to secure at lease four points from the next two games it will be curtains…
I aint going on Saturday I am gonna stay away cause I dont want to be sat there negatively and not backing the lads, so my season ticket will remain at home…
I went to Plymouth I went to Leicester and the rut is going to continue through along hard winter if we dont start scoring goals.
If Elliot and Keogh are getting nowhere on Saturday then make a double substitution (ala Mourhino) of Freddie and Jay. Tell Jay to lead the line (if he can) with Freddie playing just behind him. With Kites and Ward up and down the flanks and give it a go!We spend too much time making sure we do not lose rather than win, all the time teams are getting away from us.The crowd will get behind a team giving it a go rather than a team blatantly playing safe, attack cautiously. A reckless approach? maybe, an entertaining spectacle? certainly.
Fair points, Prawn Sandwich. On the flip side, though…
If the team looks disjointed with Eastwood in the side, then that’s Mick’s responsibility. Don’t forget: he bought Freddie AND the rest of the team.
If we aint got a system or method of play that can accomodate Eastwood’s ability and prowess, then who’s fault’s that? The manager’s, nobody else’s. Mick’s paid to do the job, so there’s no excuses.
And I say that even as an admirer of McCarthy.
Enough of this rubbish now we all should agree to differ its going round in circles…
HAS EVERYONE HEARD THAT CADBURYS WISPA’S ARE BACK……… YES!
Yes, we should agree to disagree, Smestow Wolf. However, I wouldn’t describe it as “rubbish”, though. I’d call it a discussion, hence the reason for this board.
Wispa’s are back ???? EXCELLENT - like a yorkie but nicer !!
Whatever next - does anyone remember Aztecs ?? Now THAT was a bar of chocolate !!
(not that the FE V MM debate has got boring…)
Three Leaping Wolves
at the start of the debate it was remotely interesting…
but to sum it up 80-90% of the fans want Freddy back in the other want to kiss MM backside……
Its not even reasoned debate anymore and the same comments just keep coming up… for that reason it has turned into a load of rubbish!
SW
Yes Happy, I remeber Aztecs - similar to Mars bar, but I thought nicer, but do you remember Jubblys?Great in Summer.
And yes I agree this is all getting very boring now, lets hope E & S don’t get another opportunity to stir this up again - although I expect they will.
53 - Are they really?? I would consider them more of an aero with smaller bubbles (Yorkies are hard and my false teeth can’t cope with them).
Never was an Aztec fan.
Yes, this debate is becoming somewhat tiresome.
Lets just hope we can find our shooting boots saturday….or we could be looking at another dissapointing result!!
Birchland - Aztecs - mars bars with raisens in…
and jubblies… cheap flavoured iced water in wax paper - GOD I LOVED THEM !!
Is it me or did waggon wheels used to be HUGE, and Topics… how small are they now ??
I’m getting too old..I was 15 before i saw a banana you know…!
57 - personally, I blame the EC, Crisps have less in a bag, even whiskey went (almost unoticed) from 75cl to 70 cl.
Well done for Manager of the Month by the way - TM, Not You !
Anyone remember Spangles?
Greg cooper I understand what you are saying however the thing I find strange this year is that- Collins has given 2 soft penalties away. Elliot missed a sitter against leic and has done on other occasions, Keogh guilty of the Elliot syndrome, Breen made the most RIDICULOUS pass across defense against leic nearly letting cort in, Olofinjana has not hit the heights of last year… Freddie has one bad game against hull as did the WHOLE team and has been bit part ever since, the difference? Eastwood is publicly slaughtered and the others are not, I’m not questioning MM’s team selection as he is the manager and will stand or fall on his decisions what I’m saying above is that it’s not fair whatever way you look at it.
BAT - I was never a fan of spangles.. like eating broken glass.
I did like that that stuff that looked like pipe tobacco - jamaica ….something or other.
and bazooka Joes with the little cartoon strip and the chance to send of for stuff.. YUM.
(this is much betterthan worrying about Freddy Bloody eastwood…)
birchland - thanks - I feel like i did my bit.
Yeah Dan… But……….
Did you know wispa’s were back!!!
Collins is too rash to be in the team the two pens he has given away were scandlous…
talking of chocolate me n my mate billy used to work at cadburys one day billy fell into the vat of chocolate and i couldent get him out so i started singing to him,BILLY DONT BE AN AERO
boing boing
happy, you should have gone down the custard bowl youd have seen 11 of um running about :-)boing boing
Terry - Agggggghhhhhhh !!!!!!!
My mate used to have this piece of leather with a polished wooden handle - he really loved that walnut whip…. sorry.
Any wolves fan avin a go at mick should be shot! Mick is one of the best managers we hav eva had! he does wot he feels should be done and obviously freddy isnt pullin his weight! Dont bother callin yourselves wolves fans if you are going to Criticize Mick! I agree with you 100% Greg Cooper and every other fan who backs Mick and OUR!!! gold and black army, We are true Wolves fans!
CUMON WOLVES!!! STUFF THE BAGGIES AND THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE SO CALLED WOLVES FANS
Sorry to be boring and talk football!!!
3LW (post 50) Who cares about who’s fault anything is? I don’t doubt Eastwood will be a top player for us but right now we have players who can do a better job. Imagine Eastwood with Keogh’s workrate and ability on the ball? I think that can be coached into him. Sadly for Keogh I dont think it works the other way round.
ps. I used to love “Old Jamaica” chocolate!
talking of food when sammy chung was manager of wolves i saw him in the pub,i said sammy i like your number 9,he said who john richards i said noooooooo your special fried rice
boing boing
Hmmm Bazooka Joes - Was that the bubbly that had those cheapo transfer stickers on?
And Fizz Bombs
Old Jamaica Yum - Rum N Raisin
Now Keogh on the left and Kightly on the Right
Eastwood and Elliott or Bothroyd Upfront
Curly Wurlys Anyone?
I nicked the following quote from elsewhere but it sort of sums it up for me.
Re Eastwood…
We want him to succeed because we want Wolves to succeed. But New Wolves is built on determination and effort. Eastwood has to buy into that philosophy or his Molineux career will wither and die.
Freddy, are you listening?
wolves4 (66)i agree with you,but if they shoot anything like your forwards they would miss :-)boing boing
No not old jamaica choc… this was like tobbacco and came in a pouch thing (or did my old man just give me tobacco ?) Maybe it wasn’t jamaica something… oh god this is going to bother me now…
70.Prawn Sandwich. It will be MM who’s career will die with his old school stubborn man management attitudes. I like him, but come on Mick…lighten up dude!
The reality is that most teams rely on premadonnas that misbehave off the pitch, including training, but come up with the goods on the pitch. Who out of the following would MM NOT have tolerated in his first team…
Maradonna, George Best, Tony Adams, Gazza, Stan ‘i’m too good too train’ Collymore…and dare I mention Roy Keane. Although Keane has admitted himself he deserved to be sent home for his behaviour…the fact is Ireland would have been a better team with him playing.
As for Freddy..what exactly has he done to get dropped. He was poor against Hull because Okocha wouldn’t let us have the ball. Maybe if he’d recklessly given away penalties he might have kept his place. It wasn’t till our own tried & tested overpaid premadonnas came on(Gray & Bothroyd) that we showed any signs of recovery.
I applaud MM for attempting to build a squad based on based on work rate but as with most fans I’ll judge MM on performances on the pitch…not how great they were in training.
Also 10. Greg Cooper. We’ve put up with at least 25 yrs of inadequate decline & underachievement & are all experts in recognising the signs of another poor season…it’s hardly a knee jerk reaction.
On the positive side we are dominating games which MM must be credited for…but this makes the Eastwood/ Bothroyd situation even more bewildering.
& 61.Happy Baggie. Yes spangles were like eating broken glass.
What short memories people have.
Wasn’t the Norwich performace stunning? Didn’t we take Plymouth apart? We didn’t win I hear you say - true but how often does that happen in football?
I don’t think anyone can disagree that last season was the most enjoyable for years - 11 players proud to wear the Gold and Black and giving their all week in week out.Don’t get me wrong I am desperate for Wolves to win and am in a foul mood when they loose but a group of players giving everything fr a crowd that knew it was so refreshing in today’s football climate. Clearly that lot down the road had a group of mercenaries who couldn’t give a fig about their fans and club.
Who was responsible for that feel good feeling? MM gives praise and crtisism when it is justifed and just because you buy a million pound plus player doesn’t mean he automatically plays - do you keep playing Frankowski? I like Freddy and believe his time will come but I also will continue to back MM’s judgement for now and not let negativity invade my season as it has done previously. I think my argument above is enough to suggest MM deserves our support fotr some time yet.
Simon(73) I guess you don’t go to too many games with the frequency of buses from Oklahoma to Wolves so you may not have realised I really don’t care if the lad is struggling with a Mike Tyson alter ego. He’s just not been playing well enough. When he gets some form back and he’s better than the two incumbents, then I’ll be standing on my (Padded) seat cheering him.
