Albion 1 Stoke 1

leon.jpgLeon Barnett grabbed a point for Albion as Stoke enhanced their reputation as the Baggies bogey team.

Tony Pulis’ side took the lead through Ryan Shawcross’ header in the 27th minute.

The Potters looked like they might hold on for the three points until Barnett bagged his second Albion goal 17 minutes from time, heading in Filipe Teixeira’s free kick from close range.

Tony Mowbray’s side piled on the pressure in the closing stages but could not force a winner in front of just over 20,000 at The Hawthorns.

The draw keeps Albion in third place with 17 points from nine games.

Baggies fans have your say on the result below the story.

would of taken a point before the game so i’m happy with the result.

We deserved at least a point tonight. Stoke as expected defended doggedly and only threatened on the counter attack.
The point keeps our unbeaten run going and we need to aim for at least 4 points from our next two away games.

call yourselves loyal fans then why jeer the team off at only half way through the game.

We are too lightweight in midfield - the same as all of last season. 4 tippy - tappers are no good against teams like Stoke ( and Derby ! ) Get some players in who can tackle Mr. Mowbray, otherwise we wont be going anywhere again. Koren was shocking to-night.

not a terrible result at all, and keeps you just shy of the 2 points a game automatic promotion average.

this teixeira sounds like as fantastic buy.

you will settle for a point at home? dear dear.

Now you know what it was like to play against your lot under Megson:)

I am a bit disappointed as we dominated the game. Having said that Stoke started time wasting midawy through the first half and the ref never really got a grip of them. Still it is a game that last season we would undoubtably have lost so we are learning and improving with every game and showed great spirit to get the equaliser. A win against the saints onSaturday and we are flying again

would have taken a point before the game but after seeing it it feels like 2 points dropped. the ref lost all control of the gam after stoke scored and ruined what had all the great makings of a good scrap for all the points.

  10. boy from the REAL black country said:

Got to hand it to stoke really, no-ones better at this level at defending for 90 mins, time wasting, kicking lumps out of the opposition and grinding out a result - but i wouldn’t pay to watch em every week! They’re ugly but very effective, not great to watch but i begrudgingly admit you have to admire them at times! That said, a stronger ref would’ve set the tone by clamping down on some of those early challenges (assaults?) and booked em, the excuse for a ref tonite had both sets of fans singing you don’t know what youre doing! says it all really. Good hard earned well fought point for both sides. Barnett man of match for me and not just for the goal.

even more convinced of our promotion credentials tonight.make no mistake,we would have lost this 1-0 12 months back.
2 tough away trips coming up but we go there in anticipation rather than fear.
i know the fans disappointed in beattie and pele so far but keep the faith, they still have roles to play.also..wait till bednar gets fit.a very talented footballer still to come

You are an honest guy pal. and there aren’t many of those about. All in all I think a draw was a fair result. The baggies may have pinched it if the BLONDE BOMBER had played.

  13. Cyril Randle said:

Stoke defended well, throwing bodies at the ball (and at us much of the time), counter-attacked well too but what a job they gave the referee with their cynical time wasting tactics and gamesmanship, (another modern word for CHEATING!). Some say the ref was weak for letting them get away with it but he booked several and warned them. This method of play has to be manager generated so Tony Pulis, step up and take a bow for bending the rules to breaking point. Never lose sight of the fact that IT’S THE PLAYERS THAT CHEAT NOT THE REFEREE, so don’t blame him for bad sportsmanship.

Well, I followed the game on my Blackberry while teaching in a classroom in Sacramento California. Been here 4 years & love it here, but oh! how I miss watching the Baggies, especially now they’re playing with such verve and style. Hey - I HATE Stoke City!! Looks like we really deserved to win this one as well! I DID see highlights of the QPR demolition of Sunday, on the Fox Soccer Channel here. Did me old heart good - especially the Koren volley. If that had been Rooney or Ronaldo, Motty & the like would have been rabbiting on about how they are world class etc. etc. (Yawn). Baggies will soon top the table and stay there. They are obviously the team of class in the division. Sorry Wolves!!

We put up with alot of timewasting/cheating after their goal so i’m glad to see we kept the correct concentration & application to our game to keep going in between numerous tatical stoppages on Stokes behalf. Fantastic atmosphere again last night. Overall pretty much happy with a point despite looking the more quality team.

  17. wbabomber said:

On the balance of play we were by far the better team and deserved three points. However, Stoke defended well, wasted time at every opportunity, broke play up by constantly committing fouls, and was aided and abetted by the worst refereeing i have seen since we were in the prem.
Millers reaction at the end said it all, note to Jp TM, sign Miller up now, what ever needs doing do it!!!

  18. Pollylad said:

The most cynical performance I’ve ever seen. Last night was not just about WBA Vs Stoke - it was about everything good in football against everying bad. Id rather watch a pub team than pay to watch Stoke !

  19. Baggie Born ' n' Bred said:

A game we would have lost last season, no doubt about that, and we nearly grabbed all the points, which would have been poetic justice.

Stoke turned up to play a wholly negative way ( given that is the only way that suits the players available to them), cynical football - I use the word football loosely. Score on the counter and them defend, or should I say bend every rule in the book as far as you can and then some more. Throw in routines that would not look out of place on the Chuckle Brothers….”To Me, To You To Me” and then maybe we will think about taking it. How can a team be allowed to so blatently time waste from the 28th minute!!!!! and not see red, the ref eventually booked all of the back four once each when if he had wanted to show he was in charge he would have marched one off by early in the second half.
Although that would have taken away from the performance by us.

TM is right we will not win 23 home games this season, so as they are our bogey team I can settle for the point, especially due to the manner in which the team played for each other, and the shirt.

No we did not win last night , but i was PROUD to be a Baggie fan.

    Boing Boing!!

Interestingly the same result as the Dingles fans got tuesday, but I bet it will be a totally different fans reaction

I dont normally knock individuals (unless they disrespect the team) but I have to say that Craig Beattie still does not look like the right answer up front. He is supposed to have pace and be able to hold up the ball….he has neither, Macdonald showed great pace down the left when he came on and linked up play well, I know he has his dissenters amongst some of the fans, but until Bednar and Slusarski are fit and able to show what they can do, I would give Macdonald the spot ahead of Beattie anyday. I have a sneaky feeling he may turn out to be better than some of you out there think!
    Any thoughts?

so your bubble has finally burst and that sparrow on your badge doesnt look quite so chirpy this morning. your inability to break down an average stoke side proves that if your “charge of the light brigade” style of football doesnt work then you have nothing else,no ideas no class. meanwhile down at the “golden palace of kings” wolves go quietly about their business of winning this division

  23. we8wba said:

    1. if baggies did boo (i dont know if they did?) then this is appalling

    2. settling 1pt home to stoke is bad

but i would swap our points for tescos any day of the week

  24. W.B. Yay! said:

A decent result and proof of progress from last year – as others have said, last season we’d have lost that one. Tonight we broke down a really resilient team and got a deserved equaliser, so well done Baggies. Fair play to Stoke though – they are doing their best with limited resources and aren’t a million miles away from doing what we did under Megson. As much as i love what Meggo did for us though, i ain’t half glad we don’t play like that anymore!

I think the top three at the moment are the three strongest teams in the league –Charlton might well pip us for the title (but won’t do as well in the Prem cos we’re the better footballing side) but Watford don’t have our quality, so a top two place is definitely possible.

Just about sums up your lot at the moment….the only positive in your eyes is not how your team are doing but the crumb of comfort we despite playing football dropped 2 points against a very ugly team,On any other night we would still have won.
I feel so sorry for your plight at the moment, you aspired to so much….. then the season begins and your fragile dreams are shattered. There are some wolves fans who post on here and make valuable football comments, then there are the others ……and you are one of the others

    Cornish Wolf (3) and We8wba (23)

The booing that you talk about was at half time, was by both sets of fans…. and directed at the yellow livered apology for a referee…… and occurred as the players were off the pitch and going down the tunnel…. leaving only the triumberate in black available to appreciate what the fans thought of them.

We shouldn’t be pleased with a point at home….

    BUT

We all know our weaknesses as a side, and we’ve just come through a run of games against Bristol City, Scunthorpe and Stoke unbeaten. All physical sides that we would’ve struggled against last season.

In a strange sort of way, Stoke are probably one of the hardest games we’ll face over the season because of the contrasting styles, and I for one am as optimistic this morning as I was Monday morning.

    COME ON YOU BAGGIES!!!

Lets set the record straight here

The booing at half time was aimed at the weakest ref you will ever see, and the appaling tactics of Stoke City.

    Stoke City Football Club.

Should be took to task by the trade descriptions act.

I would like to know the foul count,
cynical, is not quite a good enough word to describe what went on.
I was proud of the boys last night,
it would have been easy to lose our discipline.

Punk, i know you`re on a wind up mate, with the bubble burst thing,
but last night convinced me even more that we will push this league.

Despite Stoke`s tactics, we opened them up time and again,
just couldn`t get the winner we deserved, it happens.

When I heard KP was out I started thinking “hoodoo” and maybe i was right… I’m sure we would have had a better edge with Supa Kev up front, but on the whole I was pleased with the performance.

We matched the best battlers in the league - and in the end should have won. We definately would not have got that point last season so pleased with the improvement.

We can’t “do a QPR” every match but I bet TM was happy with our determination - add that with our skill and class and we are looking great for top 2.

    LOVIN IT.

Stoke are an ‘ugly team’ in every sense of the word.Cynical in time wasting-feigning injury-disputing EVERY decision.

Definitely worthy of Oscar nominations. In saying that Albion should have won. They didn’t so it’s on to the Southampton game.

To the Wolves supporters a simple question. Would you swap positions in the table if given the opportunity?

Of course you would. Wouldn’t you?

    The Sparrow is very chipper,

Do agree about Wolves going about it quietly…………Very very quietly………… comatose even……zzzzzzzzzz.

Took positives out of last nights game and think S’hampton will be a more open match after the spoiling tactics of Stoke ( what a way to play).

  36. Happy_baggie said:

Baggie Born ‘ n’ Bred 21 - I agree with your comments about MacDonald - he is starting to find his feet now and definately showed some real promise last night - we finally saw a bit of what TM see’s every day in training…

I also agree with your Beattie comment. I love his workrate and attitude (I sound like MM) but not sure he will get a regular spot when Bednar and Bart are fit, they may just push him down the pecking order.

We missed Supa Kev last night but when all our forwards are fit we will have a great choice.

Thought Barnett was immense last night - who was that pub player we used to have ??

  37. tonymischi said:

ON WM last night they described Stoke as now better than a “pub team” for all their gamesmanship last ngiht. I listened to the commentary more by accident than design, but i feel Pullis knew that going toe to toe with a much stronger albion side would be suicide. He watched QPR get trashed and was determined that spoiling tactics would reap something from a game where on paper they’d get nothing. He’s clever as others have said..but they won’t be there at the end of the season. Not good enough, no depth they’re struggling already.

Ironically, we’re facing Coventry, (a bit of a bogey team) this Saturday…yet you lot often do well against them.

Personally, I’d much rather be facing Stoke City because we usually get good results against the Clayheads.
