Just days after the shock exit of midfield veteran Danny Sonner, it is all but definite that another senior player will soon be leaving Walsall for the second time in his career, writes Walsall blogger Ben Lowe.
Rumours surrounding the future of striker Martin Butler have been rife since the summer, so learning that the club have made him available for transfer comes as less of a surprise than the cancellation of Sonner’s contract on Thursday.
Dudley-born Butler, who made 80 appearances for the Saddlers during his first spell at WS1 before signing for Cambridge United in 1997, won-over his fiercest critics last term thanks to some hard-working and productive performances in attack.
However, throughout pre-season he looked incredibly uninterested.
More recently, Peterborough’s bid to reunite the former Reading and Rotherham forward with Keates proved unsuccessful and his displays thus far in League One have been consistently sub-standard.
His exclusion from the squad which beat Hartlepool on Saturday was mysterious, but, as did fellow fans who also made the long journey north to Victoria Park, I presumed the 33-year-old had simply suffered an injury.
It seemed the only logical explanation; this was Richard Money’s choice of captain against Oldham last weekend. What happens now will be intriguing.
Money could decide to loan him to Posh, providing they are still keen to acquire his services, with a view to a permanent switch in January, or maybe even force him to train with the youth team.
One thing is for certain though… supporters have probably seen the last of Butler in the white and red of Walsall.
A few months ago I would have been sad to see him go, not anymore.
Saddlers fans, what do you think? Have your say below.
