Walsall striker Martin Butler today launched an angry attack on Jeff Bonser and insisted he will not play for the Saddlers chairman again.
Butler, who was transfer listed yesterday after a bitter contract dispute erupted, accused Bonser of ’stabbing him in the back’ by withdrawing the offer of a new deal.
And the 33-year-old confirmed he has asked boss Richard Money not to pick him in the wake of the row.
Butler said: “I told the manager last week I didn’t think I could play for a man (the chairman) who could do that to me.”
Butler claims Bonser went back on a verbal agreement to offer him a contract extension, made before the experienced striker held talks with Peterborough over a possible August move.
He claims he was assured before he travelled to London Road that he would be offered a contract at The Banks’s Stadium if he rejected a move.
Butler said his agent’s calls were then ignored for a month before he was told last week that the chairman had changed his mind.
Butler said: “I turned down Peterborough because I was coming back here to sign the new contract, and now I’m told the chairman has changed his mind.
“The chairman has retracted his offer, which is an offer he made to me face to face.
“He told me he wanted me to stay and that the manager wanted me to stay and now he has turned around and, I think, stabbed me in the back.”
Bonser said today: “The policy of the club has always been not to discuss contractual discussions publicly.
“However, I will say that there are many inacurracies in the comments attributed to Martin Butler.”

In that case then I hope Mr. bonser doesn’t pay him.
Play better and you’d get a contract Mr. Butler!

He isn’t playing for Bonser, he is playing for WFC, his manager, his team-mate and more importantly, the fans, you know those Martin? The ones that contribute to your wages.
You lied to the fans once in the press about not having talks with Posh during the summer, why should anyone believe you now?
Maybe if you’d given a rat’s @rse during the last six months, we’d be bothered, as it is we’re glad to see the back of you.

Typical Bonser.

I think we should hold comment till we get the full details. I can however see why JB has withdrawn his offer. Butler hasn’t exactly been banging the goals in lately.
If he’s refusing to play,I suggest we get rid as it will only upset the squad at a time when we need a couple of good results to avoid a relegation battle

Butler thanks for everyhting u legend! U got us promoted last season. These sad ***** below dont have a clue!

got to admit it is a load of tosh and dont know who to believe, Bonser is always full of crap but then again Butler did say he hadnt spoken to Peterborough and he had, i know this because one of our bricklayers is Keates dad and Keates is Butlers best buddy. Maybe now we can try and get a decent forward in who can actually score goals i.e. more than 12 in league 2 (if he got that many).

I know martin, he is a good man and has been messed about by bonser. The guy is a back stabbing typical buisness man. He should be ashamed.
Just look at what he HASN’T done since promotion.

I did predict this scenario when “Judas” re-signed. It has happened so many times before. For all Jeff’s faults he only want’s people who want Walsall. As he said to Colin Lee “Of course you can talk to Plymouth” and then sacked him. Quite right. What is Judas moaning about. He got a verbal agreement with Walsall tried to better it and then told where to go. Quite right Mr Bonser.
As Blakey always used to say “That’s made my day Butler”

hahaha how funny is this while all you lot was saying how good butler is last term few of us saying he was poor and evidently he will not cut it at league 1 maybe 2 like last season hes a goal poacher not a natural born striker and thats what we need for once i agree with bonser fair play for not offering a contract because evidently on the pitch he as not been any good ok neither as mooney but at least it looks like he will score once he as settled it seems butler as made up his mind he doesnt want to play but what an idiot that isnt gonna make bonser offer him a contract. because if i ent doing my job at work i couldnt moan if i got the sack what ever happend to playing football because u want to not because of the money a small clublike us cant afford 2 be paying out silly amounts to help butlers pension fund and we need passionate players * rant over*

No chairman in their right mind would offer Butler a contract extension given his form, he went into semi retirement last November. I dont beleive for one minute that Bonser would gurantee any renewal regardless of form. I wouldn’t pay too much attention to Butler’s comments anyway…not averse to a bit of bull is he?

Both parties seem to be at fault.
Walsall FC’s problem is that they
don’t go public quick enough.What
official statements come out are short and terse with the obligatory
“We won’t be making further comment”

Oi, Butler. Get yourelf a job at the post office. You’ll fit in well with all the other lazy strikers.
